Myth Buster: Maxxis Tire Mounting

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 4:51pm

MYTH: Maxxis tires are difficult to mount

The answer to this myth is FALSE.

Today my wife and I mounted two Maxxis tires (IT model) in less than 30 minutes. The bead stretched over the rim like a rubber band.

I have no special tools just three 7.00 dollar tire irons, one five gallon bucket, soaped the beads on both sides and had my wife stand next to me for moral support so I wouldn't lose my temper and start cussing up a storm.

SIDE NOTE: Please spread the Myth results because my threads or username never last more than two days here.

Is this spam for Maxxis?

Highsider,

Someone has to give Maxxis a good name. Damn, all I have heard about Maxxis is great tires...but a real bitch to mount.

This is a discussion board so I decided to let everyone know Maxxis tires are not difficultto mount at all!

However, I am a Mechanical Engineer and that makes me superior to most drones of society but come on anyone with some mechanical know how can do it.

One of the guys I camp with changed my Dunlop with a bib in it in under 7 minutes. Pretty cool to watch. I hate changing tires. So your 2 in thirty minutes beats me on most days.

The only tire that I've ever mounted that was harder than a Maxxis is the old 8 ply Trelleborg tires they used on ISDT bikes. They last good (which is nice on the back of a 500) but they're too hard to mount. My favorite rear is a 756, but you can wear one of those out in two days, so I'm going back to the Perellis.

Let's make sure we are talking REAR tire changing for the new grade of super-stiff 110 or 120 four-stroke tires. These things are a booger!

I can swap a front tire of any brand, in 10-15 minutes depending on conditions.

Pirelli's cost too much.

I picked Maxxis because I see alot at the track and every trail rider I spoke to has nothings but good things to say about them.

Mine was a 100 on a 18 inch rim. It's for my 1983 rm 125 which my wife rides.

Don't get me wrong, I love them when they're on the bike. I just don't like them when they're laying on the bench.

Why come on with any know how; you're Mr. Slurperior, remember?

Obviously with your Mech Engineering superiority to most drones of society, you couldn't answer what the tire size is called.

Aspect ratio.

Your username or threads never last long because they're probably as stupid as this one.

Besides a front which the sidewall is even or taller than the width of the knobs, a 100x100x18 rear is real easy as well. Try a 120/110x90x19 sometime. Many times over.

Every racing off season produces more of these clowns.

The hardest tire that I've ever tried to put on is a paddle tire on an 85. Thats one hell of a battle right there! Paddle tires for the big bikes are hard enough, but then you try putting it on a smaller wheel and it's a struggle.

Pisses me of to see friend and ex ISDE rider Kurt Hough knock out a rear tire in 5 minutes flat. Pisses me off more when he is enjoying a beer laughing his ass off watching me rip knuckles and swear at 30 minutes plus. Yes I suck at changing tires.

If you are counting on the bead to stretch you are doing it all wrong.
I don't find Maxxis IT any harder or easier than other tires. Once you get the technique right, it doesn't matter what tire.

You cheated. Your wife helped. Next time film it and show us underlings how great you are since you are a mechanical engineer. I wonder how many dudes working at Discount Tires have a mechanical engineering background?

Thank you AndyM, I was feeling inferior to this superior Mechanical Engineer Intellect.
