In Search of Safety Flaggers for Outdoor Nationals

Any given Pro Motocross National needs around 60 safety flaggers to help facilitate a safe racing environment. The last decade or so, some track organizers are struggling to meet even 50% of those needs, so I've set out to help recruit volunteers year round through a website I started.

If you've ever wanted to get involved with the Pro Motocross Nationals or an Arenacross races - you can register as a Safety Flagger on www.FlaggerFinder.com

We've partnered with the AMA and MX Sports, and will be taking registrants all the way through August for Pro Motocross.

Forgive the self promotion - but at least it's not another YouTube vlog.

How are people not trampling others to get in on this?     I am shocked.

I have flagged nationals and west coast SX. If you have never done it, it is a great experience but long days. Something you will never forget if you are into MXor SX

FLAGGER SHIRTS

I went through a flagger phase. I'd be down to do it again. If you've never done it before it's an exciting day to say the least  ! Laughing

Come on where else do you get to stand on your feet all day in the blazing sun, get roosted by 40 pro's every couple minutes or so, sorta maybe kind of get to watch a little bit of the first lap (once they go by your section) after that it's 35 minutes of watching your section from behind while rotating your head every 3/4 second to make sure you're not going to get run over, you're standing on an off camber hill so your back will be history by the end of the day, in between races instead of grabbing a cold one and taking a piss you get to wrestle and drag the fire hose around and water your section, it'll be too dry or too muddy depending on which AMA guy yells at you, then after that when you're almost bored the next race will start and it's stress city for 35 minutes again, oh and the job doesn't pay anything, What's not to like ? Laughing

I think it'd be pretty cool to be that close to the action and quite an experience.    At least once, anyway. Cool    I'm so surprised they have a hard time filling those slots.

You are 100% right. At least in Supercross being that close to the action you can see things as a track worker that you never could as a spectator. I'm currently on the Feld crew for Florida SX races and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

I might be interested, the two closest rounds for me are High Point and Ironman. I've been to spectate Ironman before but never been to High Point.

I'd like to do it.   But closest race to me is Pala and those are usually 100+ degrees...    Maybe when I was younger I'd be on board for those temps.  Dry

Haha SO TRUE. I’ve flagged at the Elsinore National and I don’t think I’d ever do it again. Such a rad experience but I like to actually watch and enjoy the racing and be able to move around the track.

I would have been so in for this 50 years ago. Now it’s the VIP section so I have a easy restroom access to take care of a busy bladder 😂

The May race has been pretty nice weather. 2 years in a row have had 70’s most of the day. I have to skip the finale with the 100+ temps

In Supercross they pay you 125 bucks a day. Last time I spent 70 bucks on gas and 285 bucks on a hotel. You don't do it for the money.

^^Sounds like for SX they do. When I did it we got free admission obviously , lunch, a goodie bag and a t-shirt. I think for the two day events back then we got a campsite comped too.

Southwick would be a good place to flag. The fences are packed five deep, so spectating is not so good there.

Tough gig for no money. I’ve flagged at chillitown for years and made $250 a weekend plus breakfast lunch and dinner, tshirt and the old promoters lent me so tools for a project. If they aren’t the AMA should be paying flaggers.

Get what you pay for… lots of people making good $ off the races they can’t pay for good flaggers? Wonder how much the promoters are taking in?  Minimum 500$ for someone that knows what they are doing or a T-shirt for a clown…

Hey can you let me know when you're putting a race on ? I could use a few extra bucks. I'm experienced, I've got the T-shirts to prove it...

You guys realize that the flaggers who do NASCAR, INDYCAR, and IMSA are all volunteers?

I tried for 4 years to go help at the Dallas SX.

My only experience was running a very successful race crew in the DFW area.

Evidently, unless you were someone's buddy, we don't care about your resume.

I finally got tapped for a race, and my job was to replace ripped covers on tuff blocks.

Didn't get fed, but I got a T-shirt.

Didn’t you get 2 tickets for friends also plus your $125?

Heard something about that

Sounds like you have no idea about who or what they get for flaggers at a Supercross. Feld has improved the flagging vastly in the past few years. They have one person in charge of flagging who is very passionate about the job and the safety of all involved especially the flaggers. Each race will have a local crew leader whose job it is to find people willing to flag the race and are mature and responsible enough. At the last race I did I'm pretty sure that every single flagger on our team was an active racer. They may be a vet racer or a C classer, but they all know what is going on when it comes to racing. At the start of the day all flaggers meet in the flag room to go over instructions and basically be given a refresher course that lasts at least 2 hours. You are taught where to look and where to flag along with proper positioning on the racetrack. All flaggers have an earpiece and can hear direction on what to do or not do if they miss something.

Important point: All Supercross races have a mixture of AMA and Feld flaggers. AMA guys will have the blue and red cross flags while Feld flaggers are just yellow.

McG194 is 100% right with his description of a SX flagging routine. Have flagged many SX races in So Cal thru the years. Many of those years were no pay  IMO, it wasn't until an HR dept.member came to a race and realized the liability they were incurring which prompted the registration and payment for flaggers 2 tickets and a crew shirt along with a few beers were the old school payment. With a good organizer, we would get a pretty good BBQ before the main event.

Laughing

It was always a problem finding flaggers at our local track. You had to do a minimum of 12 work meetings they called it. It was the same people every race flagging or working. Track had a huge crowd in s natural am theater. I always flagged in the back that’s where most of the passing & hard racing was.  I lost count on how many bikes  I had to pu & pull apart & start.  It’s a long day with no pay only food & that  was cold when you got it. The track made a lot  of money paid cash for new large skid loaders. Then 4-st took ovr only 240 riders versus 780. Track closed after being broke.

As someone who used to live in Texas and now lives in the Southeast, I'd love to do this.

But it's "too hot" for the Outdoors around here and the closest National is currently a 12 hour drive or a $500 flight.

Good thing it's not "too hot" for the thousands that have raced at Loretta's every August.Laughing

Just filled out the application to flag, chose Budd’s Creek as my preferred track. Question for those who have done this, do they cover your track entry fee or get you parked without cost?    On the application it asked about food allergies but that’s all.  Either way I’m in if they ring my phone.  👍

The way I did it was being a member of an organization. I'm a member of Florida Trail Riders and Daytona Dirt Riders and someone posted on Facebook that they were looking for flag crew members. I responded that I was interested, and the rest is history.
