I can't tell you how they size up relative to Shoei, but I recently bought one, measured my head beforehand with a tape measure and bought the one according to the size chart and it fit perfectly. Rocky Mountain have a free returns/exchange policy on helmets.
I had a fox v3 previously, in medium now have the se5 also in medium. Felt tighter on the cheek pads but was the same fitting other than that. I tried the large when I bought it and it was way too big for my head. Hope this is of some help.
My SE5 also felt very snug on the cheeks but that went away after a couple of rides. Now it feels perfect.
Same for me. I ended up getting thinner cheek pads and it’s perfect.

I have an SE5 and love it. The medium/large is the same shell with different thickness on the padding. They are fully replaceable.
I had the SE4, it was a medium, my SE5 is a large. Both fit perfectly but the 4 has a lot more hours use though.
If you go to a dealer and they have a medium and large, try them both, and get them to show you how the padding locks in, super easy and quick.
Been running TLD for MX, BMX and MTB, love the quality and comfort of their products. My D4 BMX, Downhill helmet came with medium and large cheek pads to customise, pretty sure the MX helmets don't though.
Be careful if you have an oval shaped head. Shoei fits me, TLD does not.
I've always felt I had more of a round head vs oval..
Arai, HJC, Suomy, Leatt, Fox, Bell, all fit my head great in size large.
TLD was not even close on the front to back dimension.
This has changed with the SE5. I found the SE4 very uncomfortable when I tried it on (a lot of pressure on the top of my forehead). I tried the SE5 and its very comfortable. As a point of reference, my last 3 helmets have all been Bell.
Im in a medium se5 carbon. I also wore a medium se4 carbon and the se5 fits a little more snug than the se4 did but i like it snug.
So the SE5 is an all new shaped shell that won't cause forehead pressure for oval heads? SE4 was no bueno for oval heads:

Could be a regional thing as the ECE helmets which we have here in Australia can have a different fit to the DOT/Snell ones you have in the USA, but for me the SE4 and SE5 fit very similarly, athough I would say the SE5 is slightly more oval.
Also I find it weird that another poster mentioned Fox fit fine but TLD didn't, they're both more round shaped helmets and he also mentioned that Bell fit fine and that is a very oval shaped helmet.
This has been my experience. The SE4 was an absolute no go for me... it wasn't like it got uncomfortable after a period of time, as soon as I tried it on I was like, nope, never gonna happen.
The only reason I gave the SE5 a chance is because the TLD bicycle helmets (trail and DH) fit me really well and my hope was that the SE5 would follow suit. Turns out it did.
i bought a large se 5 and wore a medium bell moto 9 before.
Ive wondered myself. Always wore medium in tld and other brands. Bought my son se4 medium and tried it on felt like a small. I've sort of had the same issue going from atr1 to atr2 both in medium.
Last Fox helmet I wore was a much older version of the V3
and by "fine" I mean, not chiseling into my forehead.
I am encouraged to know the SE5 is different. My SE4 was a disappointment. I may try the new one on.
Ok that would make more sense then.
I've never tried the previous generation Fox helmets but the current gen ones are one of the roundest fitting helmets sold in the Australian market that I have tried.
Probably in between the SE4 and SE5 in terms of roundness.
Received today, looks amazing and is very comfortable! L size fits great
