I can't speak for AMA riders as i didn't witness them in person. However for some of the MXGP guys, Cairoli was always incredibly strong mentally. He could have an off weekend from the start of Saturday qualifiers, but once the gate dropped on Sunday - especially moto 2 - he was there. Also Tom Vialle is mentally very strong.

Then you have Herlings and Ferrandis, who always believe in themselves. But also Gajser and Febvre are two riders that will never ever give up, you saw that in 2021 at the final races for the championship. Plus coming back from some gnarly injuries. Another guy that is incredibly strong mentally is Coldenhoff, i've made a thread about him after his win with Standing Construct a few years ago, highlighting his career until that point. -> Story Time - Glenn Coldenhoff - Moto-Related - Motocross Forums / Message Boards - Vital MX

agree to a point. but you could also argue age & maturity comes into play?

Ya but if you listen to their recent interviews it's not that. I remember hearing a Pulp episode where RV and Weimer got tipsy and just let loose on Kawi. I've heard Millsaps and Lusk do the same. Obviously everyone sees how happy Eli is now and how unhappy AC is. Yes ProCircuit is their own entity but they are on Kawi's, they have replacement riders getting hurt now.....and needing replacement riders for their replacement riders. I don't know what it is, bikes, teams, whatever. I just hope Shimoda get's the f off those cheesy looking green death traps. Cough**Star**cough cough. Run Jo!

Bikes are great but factory Kaw. 450 team is horrible to work for it seems

Agreed.  Hannah in 1978 was a winning machine.

Hannah was so confident, he’d kick everybody butt with a stock YZ250. Then at trophy presentation Hannah (while kissing the trophy girl), would offer the YZ250 (draw) to the spectators. Beat that Tomac, Webb, Roczen, Anderson

Rv for sure.  He just went out and mentally did it.  Never chased his bike,  whatever the setup was he made it work.  He had rd,js,cr,dm,jb,tc, up his a$$ all the time and he smoked them all.  Refuse to lose.

I think Reed is #1 all time for Headstrong. Dude raced against RC, Stewart and lost enough times to bounce right back the next weekend. He's was the King of the mental game.

Shout out to an era where multiple guys were strong mentally, resulting in no single rider dominating a class or series over multiple years (The Bomber’s three 125 titles notwithstanding):

Barnett, Ward, Bailey, O’Mara, Johnson, Glover.

Does Christophe Pourcel get credit for his mental game?

One rider I would think should be on that list is Doug Henry, the injuries he came back from to be at the top level again, even after his mx career was done just look at the setbacks he dealt with and still to this day races mx and sno cross

Yet it was these uncovered, bare tables that broke him....

Austin Forkner. Takes alot to have an injury every year of your pro career when you have the speed to win the title. Let alone having 3 injures in a row that aren’t completely your fault.
