Trump fined $1 million for bringing frivolous lawsuit:
"This case should never have been brought,” U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks wrote in a 46-page ruling. “Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start. No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim.”
“Mr. Trump is a prolific and sophisticated litigant who is repeatedly using the courts to seek revenge on political adversaries,” Judge Middlebrooks wrote. “He is the mastermind of strategic abuse of the judicial process, and he cannot be seen as a litigant blindly following the advice of a lawyer. He knew full well the impact of his actions.”
Judge Middlebrooks said Mr. Trump’s suit had been “brought in bad faith for an improper purpose” and had “needlessly harmed” the 31 individuals and organizations, including the Democratic National Committee, he had sued “in order to dishonestly advance a political narrative.” The judge added that Mr. Trump’s use of the courts had helped to undermine the public’s confidence in them.
“A continuing pattern of misuse of the courts by Mr. Trump and his lawyers undermines the rule of law, portrays judges as partisans and diverts resources from those who have suffered actual legal harm,” he wrote.

This is exactly the problem. Sides. This country cannot exist with two polar opposite sides trying to destroy each other.
This country is made up of a cornucopia of humanity. The constitution says that each and every one of us can have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It does not say that anyone's happiness is guaranteed or should come at the cost of someone else's pursuit.
We either compromise and continue to pursue or we cease to exist as a country.
I think our biggest problem is leadership, or lack thereof. The brightest minds in our country are running businesses in the private sector, not running for public office. The new breed of politician, on both sides, seem more interested in personal celebrity than the greater good. The two party system can work, just not with the dim bulbs we are being asked to choose between.

Humans are basic animals, and in the absence of an existential threat we elevate any slight to the status of an existential threat, because we can only be fulfilled if we are fighting for our lives. So attempts to promote any kind of equality, that can be perceived as diminishing someone else's power, influence, or simply status, is met with the same forceful response we used to reserve for legitimate threats, like lack of food and shelter, or imminent world-destroying war.
In fact, imho the increase in things like depression and anxiety among the population are partly from the isolation bred by the nature of the internet, as well as the lack of any real threats to focus our attention. Boredom is a killer, literally and figuratively. And we are becoming a population that is governed by our need to not be bored. This plays into the idle hands are the devil's workshop. That old trope is not too far from the truth.
And as a result we end up with leaders like we have in congress right now, people who have no idea how to govern, but they know what buttons to push to keep their base mad at the world, railing against their manufactured existential threats, and therefore they stay in power. No wonder Trump won't go away, he is the poster child for manufactured existential threats.
You really have to wonder how far we are from a Rome-esque collapse of the empire. Their fall came about at about a similar juncture, when their technology and prosperity were at all-time highs, some feel even better for their average citizens than we have it now. Are we facing a similar future, being doomed to repeat history?

At the time people would ask me if I was glad that Trump won. My answer was and is, I'm not happy that Donald Trump is the president but I am really, really happy that Hillary is not.

I think Obamas performance got Trump elected but I get your point.
C-SPAN does a Presidential ranking by over 140 historians whenever a Presidential transition takes place. They have done four so far. in 2000, 2009, 2017 and 2021. They rank every President based on public persuasion, crisis leadership, economic management, moral authority, international relations, administrative skills, relations with Congress, vision/setting agenda, pursuit of equal justice for all, and performance within the context of the times. Some of the rankings have changed since 2000 but not by much. Top 5 are Abe, George, FDR, Teddy and Eisenhower. Obama is 10th. Trump 41st.
I think Obama was quite possibly the most eloquent president we've seen since JFK.
