I think its a good thing but I also think most people who bitch about the purse on Vital it have nothing to to with  it in the first place. Sounds better to the masses and the more it pays is a good thing. Just like the guys who bitch because the races are criss crossing the country, it does not affect them at all but they still whine.

It’s interesting. Specifically to compare maybe a 10th place in the 450 class versus 10th in 250 class.

Does anyone know how this compares to outdoors?

This is from 2020. When we find out what 2023 will be, I'll do an update on it.

I think any increase is good, would be cool if they increased it slightly each year.

Agreed. A set percentage each year would be nice to see and a positive talking point for the sport year-after-year.

Similar to salary increases for the normal working class. 3-5% increase a year doesn’t seem like a lot, but it adds up over time.

I like the Transparency. It's sorely needed in our sport.

I'd love for all the riders to be making PGA or Liv Level of money from the Main to the LCQ.. But at least they're making more than 2017 or really any time before.

I think it will make a huge difference for the privateers. Not a lot of money in the grand scheme but needed.

The increases aren’t as big as I thought they might be, but as noted above, any increase would be welcomed, especially by the privateers.

Most here won’t like to admit it, but the riders can thank WSX for introducing a little competition.

This will be a cool feature to follow throughout the season, great idea.

The 250 class increase is impressive.

1/19/2023 7:24pm

I would hv thought the 250 class would get 10k for a win. If a 5th place guy had to live on purse money he would starve. I,m getting screwed I fought for 350 a day extra to run in the ne and can’t get it. Not bragging at all because it’s no where near the money I made on a hhg rig. And I know there’s members on here that dwarf my money. I think I make a little above ave. My last check 2,636.90  was aprox 260  more than my ave . The high was 3,900 it should be 4,200+ Every week.  But that’s 1099 and I spend 400 a week on the rd, plus pay for expensive insurance. Driving in a ice, snow storm on numerous slick 2 ln rds in Ny. 10 mi from the Quebec boarder. Is extremely dangerous having the trk constantly loose grip at 35 mph is not fun. I also work 7 days a week that,s why I say it’s not that great. I wonder if any rider ever figured out all the hrs put into a week plus race day. What there hourly wage would be.

While its great that the numbers are more readily available, I have to say it remains quite pathetic.  What we need to know is what percentage of the overall gate for the SX series brings in (gross revenue), then there should be a set % that is paid to the riders based on this number. It is still chicken feed as was pointed out earlier for the guys who scrape together enough resources to make the mains, and the top guys should be making WAY more purse considering they are the "show". For example, if we calculated a 60.00 average ticket price and an average of 35,000.00 per event multiplied by 17 events the gross revenue is 35,700,000.00 and they are paying out a total of just over 3 million between both classes? So that is under 10% of gross revenue going to the athletes. What the riders earn in endorsements is separate altogether-the question is, can a professional motocross/supercross racer make a sustainable living on purse money? I say he should be able to do so.  We also don't know what Feld brings in for their corporate sponsorship side of the revenue stream either, so I would hesitate to start popping the champagne just yet-the previous purse numbers only illustrate how fucking bad they were to start with. My .02.

The amount they get paid is pathetic!!!!!! Should be more like $50,000.00 for first place or more.

I know they hv sponsors but take the expensive travel, race sign up, race fuel 250, etc there’s not much left. In 98 you could race Lake Geneva Fri night then byron, IL. Sun The winner could make 4,800. The sport never paid much except for the top guy. In 91 a 125 ride paid 16k. That’s why I never pursued it. 90,s AX guys made more than today’s 250 guys.

I think you have Eli's purse for the season wrong Michael, I think it should be $14,000.

Looking at Nascar its not that bad, See below..

ASCAR racing is a largely popular sport across America, drawing millions of viewers during its weekly races. The NASCAR season is divided into two segments, with currently 36 races in the season. Although there are multiple income streams open to NASCAR teams and drivers, they do still earn per race, be it in prize money or bonuses. So how much is that prize money per race.

After each NASCAR race, drivers split a purse. Usually, the winner takes most of the earnings, which on average can be $47,500, and the loser takes home around $8,500. Huge races like the Daytona 500 may have prize pots of over 15 million dollars and winners may take 1.5 to 2 million dollars of that.

The purse earnings depend on merchandise sales, sponsorship deals, broadcasting rights, and more. Drivers can also gain incentives for winning certain races and performing well throughout the season.

But look at the overall winnings in Nascar

Average NASCAR Driver Earnings in A Season

NASCAR drivers don’t have deals similar to football players or basketball players; all of their earnings are performance-based. So ideally, the more races they win, the more they make and the more endorsement deals that come pouring in.

And if a driver has a good combination of skill and sponsorship, they can make a good salary. Drivers can keep 40 to 45 percent of their purses while the rest is distributed. The highest paid driver made $16.9 million in the 2022 season, and the lowest paid driver made $200,000.

Top five Highest-Paid NASCAR drivers in 2022:

Kyle Busch: $16,900,000

Denny Hamlin: $13,100,000

Kevin Harvick: $10,900,000

 Martin Truex Jr: $10,400,000

Brad Keselowski: $9,400,000

I understand this article is about what Feld is paying for the purse, but everyone knows the real money is from sponsors bonus and contingency money.

Why do you think you or anyone else is entitled to know what Feld brings in or any of their financial or business dealings, its non of your business or anyone else's. Its a well run business and they are successful and put out a great product.

I’ve never really understood why fans would get bent up over what a rider gets paid.

it’s none of your business and the rider has a choice to do it or not do it.

And some of you are just salty about other people (FELD in this case) making a profit.

I'm not asking for their books to be made public. The topic is purse money and I am suggesting that Feld is returning a miniscule portion of the most obvious revenue stream-the gate-the price of the ticket is 100% because of us wanting to see the top pros race.  Feld puts out a great product, sure-because of the athletes. The athletes are the show, unless people tune in for the opening ceremonies. You may celebrate the increase in purse money, but I am pointing out that between gross ticket revenue and every other revenue stream, Feld could afford to pay a much higher purse, a purse that allows for a sustainable living. I think this is fair, you don't. All good.

And yes I do happen to get salty about what riders get paid because based on the most obvious of math, and I have no problem with Feld making a profit, but my issue is the paltry amount of money being returned to the athletes, you know, the people that are making Feld their money. Unless I am missing something here. And the simplicity of someone saying, "hey, the riders can choose not to race", yes absolutely true, but be careful what you wish for. Maybe the riders might just realize that risking their lives every weekend to make a main and pocket 1300.00 when it costs them more than just to make the main. So, what then, are the riders worth to you? What is a reasonable, fair portion of Feld's gate revenue that should be paid to the riders regardless of Feld's other revenue streams? Are you happy with this? Do you think the current pay out represents the riders' worth, considering they are the show? It is an honest question and I'm not trying to be a dick.

Finally, would we be seeing this increased purse, and new play off structure with this new pool of money attached to it if it weren't for the world SX series? Man, Feld and MXsports sure found a lot of money once another entity was willing to pay the riders a better fee for service. So Feld and MXsports is still going to make money here, don't be worrying about where their next meal is coming from.

Well said and agreed!! Wsx just added competition for payout.  The ama sx series has been filling its pockets while  giving as little as possible to its Riders” with no threat that the riders bail. It’s chocked up the possibility of growth ..while privateers fizzle out but are every bit as important. The ama has capped its growth with greed and it’s holding back success to the point it’s walking a tight rope.  How many privateers never get a real shot and burn out trying. This is a brutal sport,  injuries are almost certain! The riders are extremely underpaid and anyone without a factory ride or a golden path to be a top contender is screwed. No? Please enlighten me.

You're missing one simple thing.....operating expenses....things like stadium rent, costs to build the tracks, store the dirt, employee pay, travel expense...etc...I think you would be shocked at how much of your average gross income number disappears through expenses...

We aren't even the same league of numbers of attendance as NASCAR. Ever look at a professional golf tournament pay-out? Dude's in 40'th place are making a million. We just don't compare.

Don, I'm not missing the expense side of the ledger, and if I am coming off as ignoring that then I should have made it more clear. I have no doubt it is expensive to rent a stadium, pay their people, dirt is incredibly expensive, transport, dirt wurx et al. I am of the belief that there is enough on the revenue side to pay more than they are, and while it is a positive move for the athletes, their total pay out for the year represents the approximate gate of one event (roughly speaking as obviously I don't have the numbers). And, more money suddenly became available when world SX showed up and that cannot be ignored.

I can't believe nobody mentioned the huge bump the 250 class got in SX total purse payout.

250 Class = 69% (niiiice) purse increase

450 Class = 14% purse increase

Very well said.

You are only including ticket sales as well.

Imagine what it would look like if you included the sign up fees every team has to pay for the riders to be able to compete at each event.

That fee is probably what currently covers the purse money.

Too much money to 250s and not enough to 450s. We already have enough guys that never move up and this purse change is going to take away from the long time privateers moving up to 450s due to the extra money. Any increase is good, but this is too lopsided to the 250s.

My .02.

You're missing one simple thing.....operating expenses....things like stadium rent, costs to build the tracks, store the dirt, employee pay, travel expense...etc...I think you would be shocked at how much of your average gross income number disappears through expenses...

More didn't suddenly become available it was because of the increase in TV money that is being paid by NBC/Peacock by combining SX/MX/SMX all on one platform. I believe you will see a larger increase in MX and then of course the SMX will be a payout that will be way more than SX and MX that wasn't there before...I'm all for everyone making more money but we will never be on the level of other major sports...the only way that will come is if our TV viewership numbers increase 10 fold...because that is where the money comes from for other sports. And as far as WSX, they have yet to prove their model works and I can guarantee you they are operating at a loss at this point as they have zero TV money to speak of, zero manufacturer or industry support and a much higher expense structure than SX...What they do have is a multi-billion dollar investor who is hoping on a return on his investment...the question is how long will he wait...

Don, I agree with you and the fact that we aren't PAYING to be on TV now is a win and I don't live in a fantasy land either where our niche sport is going to get to the level of stick and ball, I get that. I hope WSX pans out as it is great for the growth of our sport in that it creates more opportunity for the pros and a more sustainable way to make a living. We all want a situation where the working man pro doesn't have to have his/her hand out a la Oliver Twist by having to say "please sir, may I have some more."
