Random A1 observations:

-When I arrived at Anaheim stadium at my normal time I noticed the parking lot was more packed than usual.  When I got near the ticket booths I saw people getting turned away and they had "Event Sold Out" signs posted.  I haven't seen a show sell out in a long time.

-The crowd seemed more saturated with young kids which is good for the sport

-As you know being at the race you see a lot more than you see on the TV broadcast.  I just watched the peacock broadcast and it obviously only showed a fraction of the mistakes, crashes, line choices, and good rides.  I sat on the 3rd base side and watched everyone struggle with those rhythm sections.  Everyone made huge mistakes and everyone had close calls.  A lot of these were not evident on the broadcast.

-As for rider performance, it's obvious Tomac is on another level and he's the guy to beat.  However, I watched Webb and Ferrandis come from the back and dice their way through the pack.  Best supercross ride I've ever seen for Ferrandis.  Webb is definitely one to lookout for.  He was making it look easy whereas a lot of the other guys seemed to be timid as if holding on for life.  It's clear KTM didn't have a setup last year and they've now got it sorted because Plessinger looked great as well.  Anderson was moving forward until he washed out, but he was definitely on the move.

-As for the other riders, it seemed like everyone was taking a survival approach and just trying to get through the race without injury.

-I could have sworn I heard a big rev when Malcolm went down in front of us which would indicate neutral, but I could be wrong

-the loudest uproar from the crowd all night seemed to be when Barcia went down after holding up Tomac for a lap or two

-the biggest fan favorite seemed to be Jett from where I was seated.  RJ looks like he might give Jett some headaches this year.

-the beer lines seemed to flow a little faster last night

-I'm a Suzuki fan and a bigger Kenny fan now that he's on one.  I think it's a good sign that he was able to push Tomac early in the race.  This should give him confidence knowing what's possible with the new bike.  It looked like he tightened up or got winded but he was definitely on it for awhile. If it's arm pump or fitness hopefully he can improve it.  I would like to see him hire O'mara as they are both in Orange County.

-Right before the 250 main I asked my girlfriend who she has for the win, Jett or Forker?  She said, "I don't know who Forkner is".  I told her he's a kid who's got the talent to win but has been crashing out the last few years.  The gate dropped and we witnessed him rag doll down the start straight.   She said, "Looks like he did it again?".  I couldn't believe my eyes.

-The production team did a nice job with the show other than some issues with audio levels.  One area where I feel they missed the mark was showing the rider positions on the big screens.  They could easily use the real estate on either side of the screens but instead they used small graphics that were hard to see and the horizontal scroll doesn't cut it.  This is a huge miss for a lot of the fans who don't know the riders and bikes by appearance.  And speaking of appearance, there were not a lot of good looking bike/gear combos out there last night.  Anderson and KTM looked pretty good, but for the most part there's a bunch of busy looking gear out there right now.  In fact the 250 Club MX bike/gear combo was probably the worst I've seen in awhile.

Overall a great night and it was nice to see the riders appear to be mortals in the way they were all struggling.

Anyone else?

Matthews gets paid to do a not-as-good-a-job of describing the vibe / race as you just did ..

Have I got that right ?

My fellow “moto-kook-riding at the canyon or at the track” bro’s should drop me a text or pm and see if I can get some for ya. I’m usually at the stadium Thursday-Friday at the races that I go to. We’ll simply need to be on the phone while picking out your seats.

I’m jus’ sayin’…

Beer, Tequila, Angel Dog…a handshake…whatever! Laughing

I need to get off my fat ass and get a suite and really just “hang with my people”. For what ya get, the price isn’t that bad if you get 20 people on-board.

Now you're talk'n! Did the box deal in Oakland a few times,it's awesome however Jamo was $200 a bottle and $100 for nachos. So there's that.

As I get older, few things. 1 - we got a room that was 10 minute walk to stadium. We went down to Anaheim Friday night. Took the wife to nice dinner.. (bonus points).

Satuday, walked over and did the fan fest/watched qualifying. Went back to hotel, took 45 minute nap, had plenty of time to grab dinner and head back to the stadium.

Races were awesome, great A1 for sure. No end of night traffic, just 10 minute walk back.. watched some replays and went to sleep.

perfect night.

My observation is this:

The sport is in a great place.

The crowd was super into it. Definitely sold out.

The number of competitive riders in both classes is refreshing.

The track crew did an amazing job with the track, considering what it looked like Thursday.

If the biggest complaint is opening ceremonies seemed weak, things are going well. Really well.

Had a friend who picked up tixs at the box office on Thursday, excellent terrace seats for $90 and no fees which is nice. Considering I paid $700+ per seat to see the Padres beat the Dodgers n the playoffs at Petco I felt this was a steal!

Arrived at 4:30 to a crowd at the stadium parking lot. Maybe 15 mins to get parked once I paid the $40. Outrageous of course but compared to $80 to park for baseball it seemed like a fair deal.

got inside with my phone ticket which is always sketchy for a person my age. Went over to the pit entrance and saw everyone flashing their phones or wrist and I did the same and walked right in. Wasn’t sure what the guy was looking for but I just had my ticket pulled up and he waved me through. I thought the pit party was set up to amuse a large variety of people, especially small kids which is fantastic. Got to see Vicky Golden, Axel Hodges and Twitch do a few tricks. My favorite area n the pits is the vintage display (I’m 63 so that makes sense) while I was at the vintage setup a few old timers came up and started shooting the shit amongst one another. Brad Lackey, Danny LaPorte, Donny Elmer, Gary Chaplin and Briar Holcomb we’re all there and treated us fans like we were their best buds. Even got to meet Marty Smiths daughter when she stopped in to see the display with her dads stuff.

Was anxious to see some racing and check out the track. Although I enjoyed every single lap of the racing I was a little disappointed in the track. It seemed like most of the riders were doing the sections the same throughout the night. The track itself, even though it would kick my ass, seemed very smooth for riders who are the best in the world. Not any rough areas whatsoever and the whoops are nothing like we’ve seen in the past.

Jett seemed like he’s in the wrong class. He rode flawlessly in the main and made it look way too easy. The big bikes amaze me, the way these riders can handle to power of a 450 on tracks this tight is very hard to fathom. The skills they possess are so far beyond my abilities I could sit and watch them for days and never get tired of it. All in all I found it to be great entertainment and the night show flew by. Mookie leading was awesome to see, so was Barcias few laps where he led. Great to see AC make it out in one piece. I hope Forker makes a quick recovery and makes it back for the outdoors if his SX season is over. Felt so bad seeing him go down at the start.

Another thing I should mention was the crowd. Absolutely packed house and at least in my section it was an extremely well behaved crowd. Lots of kids around….young families all over the place. That is fantastic!

I had originally planned to just do one SX this year but now I’ll be heading to at least two more and maybe a 3rd. Been going to these things since I was a kid at the first Colosseum race and I’m not tired of it yet. Maybe once I hit 80, but not at 63.

We got to the stadium by 630 and parked across the street ( $20 ) Went to buy tics and signs said sold out. Lady told us to wait a few minutes as some tickets were opening up  15 minutes laters bought our $80 seats.  Crowd was the most packed I've seen since I was at  the Super bowl of motocross in 1973.  Racing was exciting and the crowd was really into it.

I’ve been to supercross races it feels like a million times so no need to arrive early.  Left the house at 5:45 for the 25 min drive from Lake Forest, got there quick but then it took an hour to park.  I think the lot filled up because eventually they parked us against the curb 50 yards from the exit.  We missed the 250 heats and sat down 5 min before Eli holeshot the season.  Yes, it was definitely sold out for real as every seat around us was full.  We had to move a couple guys out of ours when we got there.

The show moved along quickly,  made a mess eating peanuts and stayed until the end.  Chatted with friends for 5 min before leaving our seats and were back on the 5 heading South by 10:20 and home before 11.  Great night for a Moto junkie.

You got there so late you missed the first 250 heats of the season?

Your moto junkie credintials are seriously in peril. Consider them on double secret probation.

To get back in good standings you will be required to do the following at a2.

1. Wear a race jersey

2. Acquire at least one autograph from no less than 4 riders currently in the 2023 points standings.

3. Must be in your seats far enough ahead of opening ceremonies that when they start, you find yourself pondering how long the lines are at the bathrooms.

4. Stay around long enough after the races finish that you can provide a detailed description on the steps dirt works takes to start tear down.

5. Step 4 will be null and void if you complain at all about how long it takes to get out of the parking lot. However, it can be waived if you can provide proof of a 10 minute conversation with a homeless person, or if your vehicle is broken into.

Good luck

Sincerely,

Disciplinary committee

Question for those of you who attended- did you see the Jettson donuts stuff?  Maybe got yourself a sample?  I don't know why I care about this.  I wonder about random weird stuff.

I did not see them selling the donuts but I did see a kid carrying a box of them on the way out of the stadium.  It was a small white donut box that had the logo on top.

We got to the track around 11, found a spot to park by pits, watched freestyle guys warm up. The lines to get in were the longest I’ve seen in years to get in. Got in no problem, security was light and moved way faster than previous years. Getting tickets scanned off phone took a little time because people aren’t prepared when they get up there! Too many times did I see people get right to the guy scanning tickets then fumble to get their phone out, open it and find their tickets. Getting into pits was a breeze and they did it right! Get your ticket scanned, followed by a hand stamp. They had a separate entry for people who were already stamped to go thru so didn’t have to wait in line with people who haven’t been in pits yet. Lots of people and most teams eliminated the tickets to get autographs and guys were just signing when they had time. Races were great and the place was packed! Sold out and very few empty seats. Food lines moved quick and bathrooms weren’t a 20 min wait to pee! Getting out of parking lot after race was a breeze as I found a shortcut with zero people driving that way. Took a little longer to get back to hotel with the traffic lights. Usually police have people out directing traffic but the SX crowd mixed with Disneyland crowd made it a bit longer. Still a good time. And the weather was perfect! T shirt during the day and hoody at night

I know A1 is its own unique animal, but I’ve really enjoyed this thread.
I’d like to see something similar from people that attend each round. Hopefully I can catch a round somewhere as planned and if I don’t see a thread like this I’ll start one.

My son and I flew from NC to attend my first A1 race (he went to A2) last year.  A couple of observations from us.

- Orange County is absolutely beautiful and just an amazing place.  I have traveled all over, but it was my first time in this part of CA. Great people, food, beaches, mountains, and it was easy to navigate around.  I definitely get the allure of Orange County now.

- Stadium.  I thought  it was easy to get in and out of.
- Pit Party.  Best one I’ve been to in my 20 years of attending Supercross races (but that’s based on going to Atlanta).

- Opening ceremonies. I thought the tributes were a nice touch for Coy and Ken.
Patriotism.  I was very impressed when the sound went out for the young lady singing the national anthem, the commentator and crowd started singing until it turned back on.  I didn’t catch the young ladies name, but she did a great job when it turned back on.

- racing.  Some cool surprises in qualifying for the local ClubMX guys, so that was nice.

The 250 race went as expected, but the 450 race was one of my all time favorites.

Overall, it was an A+ experience for my son and I. We even got to enjoy the Golden Road Brewery.

Saw them on sale in the concourse. 4 donuts and a Jett towel for $30. Did not purchase.

$30 for the box and it included a rally towel. I didn’t eat one, so I can’t give a review on the taste. They were sold at separate tables throughout the concourse, not at the concession areas.

Somone told me that James mentioned that Malcolm hit neutral, so this confirms I was not hearing things when I said I heard Malcolm's panic rev.
