Wow, I must say, I'm quite surprised at how easily impressed some of you all are.

I, in no way, bashed Chad, he was my pick to win from the beginning of the MX season. I like Chad I just think he should have NO trouble investing 300K to make 1.5 million in this particular situation.

Why wouldn't he bet on himself? Why? The only guys he's lost to outdoors, Ricky, James and KW, aren't out there. I don't know, there wasn't anyone else I thought would beat him over 12 rounds.

We are talking about a guy who's been making 6 figures probably since '02 and 7 figures since '03; 6.5million in '04 around 9 million in '08. He says this year he's made as much as he ever has and you all are impressed by 300K. Wow.

Listen, from my point of view, if Chad "isn't" thinking that way there's a problem. Shit, I think that way and I ain't got no where near 300K.

We aren't talking about Ivan or Josh, etc. betting 300K on themselves. That, I would be impressed by.

Rapper Jay-Z is worth a reportedly 500 million dollars. He gave the American Red Cross 1 million dollars after Hurricane Katrina. While I think it's great that he gave; how much of a percentage is it of what he's worth?

I guess I'm not impressed because I expect Chad to be thinking exactly that way.
Guess I'm gonna jump in here with Stephon and continue giving message boards a "bad name."

I too picked Reed from the start, thinking he could easily handle all challengers over 12 rounds. Turned out we were right.

And according to Nerd, Reed takes out this kind of insurance regularly, and has lost the money in the past, so it's really starting to sound like the norm and not a big deal at all.

Of course, it IS a big deal with one's number comes up, so my hat's off to Speedy for the title and the winning bet.

Now, why wasn't his championship bonus an even million dollars anyway? Low payouts like that give professional motocross a "bad name." Cool

Some clarification for some of the confused on here. His C-ship bonus was 1.5 Mil, not 300K. Suzuki doesn't acutally front that money, they "bet" on it. It cost Suzuki 300K to make that bet with a 5:1 return. The gear companies do the same thing along with the energy drink sponsors. You don't think Fox was coming out of pocket with the full amount for RC bonus money do you? Many bonuses in sports are done that way. Lets say Manny Ramirez gets a new contract and he want 50 million. The team says, we'll give you 50 mil if you hit 60 home runs. They go and buy insurance for a fraction of the 50 Mil, if he hits 45 HR's, they only lose their investment. If he hits 60 HR's, they got off easy because the company that took the "bet" has to now pay that 50 Mil. The company is a legal bookie, they will take action on anything for the right price. Sponsors and teams in Nascar, same thing. Contracts in most sports, same thing, hell, I'm sure action sports like skateboarding, FMX, wake boarding are probably getting their feet wet with it.

P- Lloyds would not have given him that good of odds if they knew James was not racing. His chips were in before the "players" were out, the numbers don't lie.

Talk like this is exactly why the message boards get a bad name.
Are you serious Nerd?? My measured, non name calling, respectful opinion on what Chad did is what gives message boards a bad name? Wow, that's special.

Listen, I didn't assume that Reed is less than smart. I assumed that Reed knows how to handle his business - on and off the bike. I'm not surprised he takes out insurance policies, I'm not surprised he's won and lost money doing it.

What has Reed done that makes it such a surprise that he would be savvy in these types of ways to handle money? Chad has been a multi-millionaire for at least the last 4-5 years; he SHOULD be doing these sorts of things. If it was Jason Lawrence I'd be surprised, but even still ya never what people's strengths are. Several years ago I worked on the TV show "The O.C." and we filmed at a huge mansion overlooking the Pacific ocean. During the shoot, in the gated community, I found out that the 11,000 square foot mansion was owned by Brian Bosworth who regularly rented it out for production. When is the last time anyone heard of him? Ya never what people's strength are.The Bosworth Estate

I say congratulations to Chad on the Championship (even though I thought he would have won in a more commanding fashion even against 2 & 800). Congratulations on winning the insurance bet too. I still don't think it was ballsy. Smart? Absolutely. Surprising? No. Ballsy? Not even close. The guy is a warrior in my book and I don't think that is a bad name.

I'm glad Reed stuck it to the insurance companies!! Way to go Reed! They (the insurance industry) stick it to us all the time.......well then again, since Reedy made all that money, we'll end up paying for it with higher premiums!! Crap!

I'm a Reed fan regardless!
Always have been.
Having been BLUE before I also saw many
sides most don't see.
I've heard the good & the bad, seen some too, yet it's
the same even for us all as well.
At the end of the day people are just human!
But if this gamble is so, then props to him for sure outside
of winning the title anyway.
You see, whether it's affordable to him or not, he took a chance!
A huge chance........!
Just look at RV & Alessi, major players in it all, yet out with injuries.
The same could have bit Chad as well.
In fact, like Short, Chad had some issues, medical ones from Glen Helen on.
So again, you just never know.
A bold move for sure, & she worked out!
Gotta love the story there.

Don't think of the value as much as think of the percentages Bob. For example much like what you may spend on your Alessi fan flags each week, that is a percentage of your income. Now evaluate if you know a 1 and 3 chance your flag collection is going to go more then double in price if you sold them, you look at it as an investment, even if it means you cant purchase your flags next for the next couple weeks.

For Reed's salary it could potentially be less then a month's salary. The issue expands exponentially when the each pay period has such monetary value above the cost of living. Unless Reed is spending 100% of his monthly pay in his budget then it would be a financial burden. But when compared to the cost of living, he could afford to spend that money as an investment and still live comfortably.

Smart yes, ballsy hardly. I doubt his monthly living expense is much over $20,000. He knows he is a top performer and in my opinion a smart move for a guy like him.

Remind me again how long did it take him to lock the championship in? How many races are left?

I really thought you would get it Bobby. It probably is important to him but it isn't that much money to him. He probably pays his house staff in Miami more than that a year. It is all relative to how much someone makes.

Agree with all but his monthly living expense. I bet it is a lot more than $20K.

If I was Reed I would have definately bet on myself winning that Championship.

The risk vs reward seems like a no brainer. IMHO

$300,000 is a lot of money no matter who you are.

It just is! Reed can’t make this kind of money forever and knows it. Along with all other pro motocross racers.

I bet Reed is smart with his money.

Where I am a little confused is, he gets the Lloyds money, but does he also get a championship bonus from Suzuki to?

Side note, I have taken a tour of Lloyds in London my senior year in college. They were the start of "Insurance"

It all started in a coffee shop when sailors where delivering goods to the "new world" Everyone would put money in and if someone had a loss they paid for it out of that pool of money.

In fact a huge motorcycle enthusts set the trip up. His name is Ozzy Scofield, he is a great man! If anyone here has heard of him I know they will back me up on that.

Lloyds is a special company for sure, I will never forget that day. Sorry for the side track!

No it is NOT! There are pro athletes that bet that much on a hand of blackjack in Vegas. Reed is set for life and probably a few generations deep because of what you said in your 3rd sentence.

You think RC will ever have to go get a job?

What numbers don't lie? How do you know what the odds would have been either way? Do you work for Lloyds?
Reed was 7:5 at the US Open last year (negative odds), this policy was 5:1. Why you think that is? the first would be because of the competitors ie: Stewart, RV, Alessi. The 2nd would be because it's a 12 race series, not a 2 day event. If he bets after Stewart, RV and Alessi bow out, he is lucky to get even money. Cmon poker player, you bet with pot odds or only when you have Aces in your hand?

What if Chad Reed lost the Championship. Then he would have lost $300,000. I remember when Bob Hannah was paid $1,000,000 for his National Championship and he didnt put up a dime?

I'm sure he had a bonus for 2nd or 3rd, just not close to the $1.5mil. He would have lost his own $300K, yes. Suzuki wins, they got out of paying him $1.5mil, they paid 300K to get the 1.5 in the end.

Aces and faces only cuz that pot shit is too hard to figure out.Laughing

First off 7:5 isn't negative odds...you get $7 profit for every $5 bet.

I am not sure you know what negative odds are so I will explain..its how much to wager in order to win $100. For example, odds of -110 mean that in order to win $100, the wager must be $110.

Obviously he had to make the bet before RV and MA were out and of course by the time they were out EVERYONE knew JS was out. BUT it was common knowledge that JS wasn't racing a while before the season started.

James hinted a bunch of times in interviews with me that he might race outdoors prior to officially not taking part.

Here's something you might not be aware of that illustrates to me how confident and determined Chad Reed is. Suzuki's bonus to him for winning the 450 National MX title was $1.5 mil, paid for by a Lloyds of London insurance rider that cost them $300k. They also bought one for Mike Alessi...the day before he broke his kneecap!

Word is that Reedy put up $300k of his own money for an additional $1.5 mil policy, making his outdoor title worth $2.7 mil, after deducting the 300k he wagered.

Pretty ballsy move, betting 300 large on yourself in a 12 round series where anything could happen. My hat's off to Reed, the man has sack (and is liquid, too!). Awesome!
You didnt get that memo when he was doing what he even said was outdoor testing?

Damn, I thought you were intite.

Awesome!
James said he wanted to but don't you think the guys in the know knew it was a long shot? Also according to all the insiders and JS haters he was just playing that card even though he knew he wasn't going to race the Nationals.
