Nope, not at all. Depends on the rider.

Mine is an issue of stature and type of riding. I need to be able to kick a light bike and have it start on the first kick or so. My bud's got a 4 stroke, and I've seen way too many dudes tiring themselves out kicking the things (aside of my bud) for me to even consider getting one (although the CRF-X would be an option with the electric start and all).

I'm short, and have been stuck in positions where that one kick starting is a life saver! Smile

I also appreciate being able to rebuild a top end for $150... You have to admit that outside of racing, a 2 stroke is a great "bang for the buck". Us outdoor riders like being able to get in the ballpark of the racebike's performance without breaking the bank.

I agree, if you're not racing all the time, they're a great investment. I got my 2006 YZ250 for $3,600 nearly brand new. It only had two rides on it. Tore it down, checked everything, put it back together, and rode it. It felt like a brand new bike and has never had a problem. So fun to ride, too.

How come only if you're not racing all the time? Seems like an even better investment if you're racing all the time because you will pay less in upkeep and repairs. That's why I'm trying to switch back, and I ride/race at least twice a week.

May not sound like a lot to some of you luck SOB's, but here in Oregon, that's doing ok

Well, they were talking about racing them against 250 four strokes. I don't know if many racing clubs allow them to race in the same class. I know the AMA allows it in amateur racing, but if you just stick to your local clubs, you might not be able to race it against 250Fs all the time.

It can still be competitive in the 450 class at the local level, though, so you're right.

I rebuilt mine, cost 2.85.

NGK BR9ES I looked at the valves. I mean Reed Valves.

No adjustments, or replacements needed.

I bought an '02 RM 125 a couple years ago to have as a practice/play bike.
I also used it for a year as my ice bike.
It was bar none the most fun bike I've ever owned.
It wasnt super fast but a pipe and a good port job makes them sing.....handling was incredible.

depends on who's riding it......I cant ride a 250 smoker for shit anymore but i go good on a 250f.
When I try to go fast on a 250 2 stroke now it just seems like I'm waiting to unload big.

Have a PC platinum on the way, and a Boyesen RAM valve too. I've only ridden up & down the driveway but I already love it. The suspension is so plush!

I have a 02 rm125 thats jetted, with dep pipe and silencer and set up for enduro/woods riding. Suspension is so plush and it tuns so good. I have a 450 Yamaha aswell. As long as i keep it on the pipe, and corner speed where it needs to be, i run with some of the expert 450 riders untill we hit the wide open stuff.
Then i cruise and save some energy ready for the next section.
On the MX track, i dont find it much slower than the 250fs in a straight line, a corner i need to hold it wide open everywhere to keep on there pace, as i think the 125 looses out the most on the exit of a corner. They gain a few meters

I heard today that they were going to be the same as the '09. I was holding out hoping they were going to change, but it looks like KTM for me next year

If yamaha doesnt build it , i diffinantly will !!
Mentioned it in another thread a while back , and cant wait to get a new '10 YZ250F to mess with .. and i doubt they will change thier YZ250.
bobbym. you know it's mostly rider in SX or MX, but choice in what bikes suits you best is good to have? if you are on a bikre that suits you and puts the biggest smile on your face,, whats the diff? very few of us are gonna go pro..and make a living at it..

i regularly beat guys on 450F's or 250Fs, on a 500AF or 250AF.. but i also get my ass kicked regularly by guys on diesels as well..!! just how it is..

but there is no doubt my stock engined kx250AF is faster a stock 250F of any color.. same could be said for my 500AF, over a 450F.. as far as quickness/acceleration.. ride um both., no debate.
now on lap times? theres plenty to debate and how many times has it been done? W00t

but last months TWMX with lap times still shows a KX500AF turning faster laps than the tester rider did on his own 450F..

a bike hes not familiar with and goes 2 to 3 secs a lap faster than
on his own personal bike,
thats pretty interesting..

He not only smoked his personal 450 lap times, but did it every lap.

It's truly sad he said would race the 450 after seeing that. In my eyes...I would not call him a racer. I mean for him to drop 2-3 seconds a lap by working at it...it would probably take months!

Not to mention the OBVIOUS HP advantage at the start. In amateur racing, I rank a start to be at least 80 percent of a race.

You know, I've been on 4 strokes since 2004, had many different years/models at first I loved them but after a while riding them correctly got dull and riding them aggressive put me on the ground and in a hopspital more than a few times. After recovering this last time I took an 01 RM250 that I picked up for a couple hundred bucks and it was in autrocious shape but still had really low hours. Spent time restoring (yes an 01) and cleaning it.

First ride out at Milestone off for 6 months I felt like I had never been off a bike instantly I was back to speed and feeling better than I had in years on a bike. Im going back to what I grew up riding and know how to ride and crash less lol.

2 strokes aren't for everyone I just wish they (AMA) would lower the displacements to make the bikes start off equal in hp what you do from there is between you and the race shop but it would be nice to have a choice since not all of us are 4 stroke riders and not all of us are 2 stroke riders.

Hands down, any day of the week. Equally skilled riders on equal displacement bikes and the two stroke will eat the four stroke for lunch.

If it wasn't the case why wouldn't they need all these crazy class rules to keep the two strokes down.

Tnx for the info!!!

Back to the quasi discussion: There's no way a 250 2t make average Joe faster at any track. But a pro is another topic though. But are we comparing stock bikes or tuned ones? I would suggest a guy RC with his riding style would be faster on a tuned 250 smoker than on a 250F since. Pourcel would not be faster is my opinion...
