You operate on the assumption that newer equals better.

I know quality when I see/hear it.

Who is his? TP199?

I bet you are talking about RC for more money.

TP199 would be content with what he has if I were to guess.

I still say Suzuki keeps TP199 before RC.

The amount of money per year plus perks I was told about both really surprised me as well.

I talked about this a little bit with a PR guy from one of the manufacturers. He told me that it's all well and good that there's a vocal minority of two-stroke lovers (ah, the good old days), but that when it comes time to vote with their wallets, the majority of them opt for four-strokes. Smile
Gibby, they opt for the 4-stroke because they have to. The thumpers go faster for the most part and the torque difference is huge. The rules are such that the smoker is at a disadvantage now, thats not a secret. I wont resurrect the whole 2 vs. 4 thing but if the only bikes that were allowed to race AMA races were smokers, the sale of smokers would be just fine. Rules influence buyer choices.

Valli is trying to get Regal.

Local Yamaha/Honda dealer here just broke ground the other day on a huge new facility on prime real estate. I guess they are not doing too bad despite current economic conditions.

When you spend 5 to 10 million dollars to sell 5 to 10 thousand units... Personally I love the factory bikes but the reality is there is no business model that supports them continuing to race this way. The era of Factory Teams is out and Factory "support" is in.
US MX/SX has been about the last stand for this structure, and IMO the sport stands to grow more for everyone, including the OEMs, when the OEM's focus on building bikes and doing R&D, and sub out the race teams.

What needs to fill the vacuum are smart, innovative team managers and owners to run with it.

So you think that the general public would be able to afford to buy a new bike if it had 2 less strokes? You do realize that a very small percentage of people that buy a motorcycle race it on an MX track.

Yeah, that's because the majority of the manufacturers don't even make a 2-stroke for the vocal minority!!!!

All I know is 8 grand will buy you a nice used car or truck nowadays. Its waaaay to high for a recreation item like a dirt bike. I only paid 5K for the Ford Ranger I drive now, and it was in premo shape whe I got it. If not for the looney financing they offer, they wouldnt hardly sell a single one of those overpriced tractors.

So now you want o compare the cost of a motorcycle to a Ford Ranger? WTF does that have to do with what the difference in cost of a 2T or 4T is? What is the difference between a YZ250 and a YZ250F where you live?

when you bring up bike pricing, it is amazing the difference that have been made. Lets see I started working at a bike shop in 1987, I made $5.65/hr.. thats $11,300 a year.. Bought a brand new CR125 for $1795.. thats 16% of my annual wages... NOW I see guys working the same job for $10.50/hr.. thats $21,000 a year ( if they are lucky!).. however the equivalent CRF250 is $8295.. thats 40% of their wage!!!!!!!! doesnt leave much for food clothes and shelter little own a good helmet, gear, a trailer, truck, gas. etc now does it.. hmm wonder why they are selling less bikes.
My '74 CR125M went out the door of Honda North for about a grand.

Maybe it's a moto thing in regards to 'cost too much'.
Case in point, Intense Cycles, a custom mountain bike manufacturer in Temecula is having another record year, can't keep up with demand and their top of the line DH bike (M6) has an MSRP of about $3400, complete buffed out bike would run you about $7k.
Intense got about $5K of my hard earned money earlier this year for a new Tracer VP. Had the last one for almost 10 years, so total cost of ownership for the bike itself (not inlcuding tires, tubes, replacement parts, etc.) works out to be about $500/year. My dirt bikes on the other hand...even if you make a bike last 3 years, you're still looking at an annual TCO of $2500-$3000 + parts, fuel, etc.

From my perspective, a big part of the problem is 4T bikes that cost $6-8K new but you can only sell for $2-4K because people are afraid to buy used 4T's. Damn...I need some cheaper hobbies! Smile

I am all for the 2-strokes coming back, just so people have options. I don't see how limiting options can help the OEM's. But I just paid 6000 big ones for a brand new YZ250. It's not cheap. Obviously it's marked up quite a bit because it's almost the same bike as 2006, but still. Bike prices are going to rise no matter what. It's the repair costs that get people, like myself. I'm getting a full FMF hook up for less than the price I paid for my FMF muffler on my 250F.

They get more coverage than the whole rest of the suzuki riders put together by themselves.

Makita Suzuki will keep Dungey and Reed as they are the only real hop they have at more championships. Burner is out.

Mikey needs to go to JGR Racing as they have their shit together better than most OEM factory teams. Yamaha SM Indians has Bubba for the indoor title and Mikey will give Yamaha JGR a legit shot over the outdoor title. Grant is a good one for them to keep for both series if he can stay healthy too.

Then new kid Kyle regal should be rewarded with a ride in the Factory Yamaha truck as well as Goerke or Hahn.

Kawasaki will keep Villopoto but could add Moss and Hahn.

Honda is going to dump Short and need to clean house but they will keep Ivan or Davey.
Let me see here.......wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong..........wrong........

Even though your figures are a little off, there is some truth to this. A new 1988 CR125 retailed for $2,499. If you use the Consumer Price Index to compare that figure to it's buying power in 2009 you get $4,550. Considering that a new '09 CRF250 retails for $6,999, the '09 bike buyer is paying $2,450 more for a Lites bike after adjusting for inflation.

Now, the '09 bike is much better than the '88 bike so you have to take that into consideration but it is a fairly large difference that will have an affect on sales, and ultimately the number of riders in the sport.
thanks for the back up there.. but no my figures are not off! I'm Canadian.. yup.. $8295 for a CRF250.. and yes $1795 for a cr125 in 1987, Thankz.

Neither if they aren't racing they aren't helping the brand.

I'm guessing Travis gets more exposure on a Suzuki than Dungey, RC, and Reed combined.

Not everyone who buys a bike, buys it to race.

Aint that the truth!! If you look at the surfing world.. Bruce Irons gets waaaay more $$ from sponsors and is a household name.. NO CONTESTS for Bruce! There are a lot of guys that do the contests and get no where near what Bruce does.. so exactly.. not all that buy bikes race.....ahemm.. can you say Seth Enslow?

Honda needs to clean house in the management area, not in the rider area...... all their riders, Shorty, Hot Sauce and Davi are incredibly talented, insanely fast riders, all more than capable of winning titles...... but all 3 have extremely under performed this year...... it's a motivation thing... if they had the 80's version of RD running their team, Honda would have dominated this year, at least outdoors....

and yes for sure, Goerke/Hahn/Regal are all really fast riders, a million times faster than i'll ever be, and very motivated to do well in the thinnest field in history outdoors this year... but do they have the capability to do what Short/Hot Sauce/Davi can do if they were properly motivated?? i highly doubt it....
