I was sitting 20 yards from the track on Saturday and couldn't tell who the Kawasaki rider was in third place for at least 3 laps. The front plates were muddy and the side plates are so small, us old guys can't read them.
Please help us geezers out and put some side numbers on the bikes that we can read. If thats not possible, how about passing out hand held scanners so we can read the transponders as the riders go past.

It would be nice if there was a tower where you can see the top 5 riders, like they have in SX. During practice, you have no idea who is running what time and how they are qualifying.

x3. The small numbers don't help sponsors and they definitely hurt from a fan perspective. Budds was the first national I've been to with the small numbers and I definitely did not like them.

It would be different it they were utilizing the extra space with some LARGE sponsor signage, but it looks to me like they're simply slapping a couple of extra stickers on the extra space.

DITTO...........!
I like the fact that DC & Co. are trying new ideas.
That's how 1 & all improve & get better.
But from SX now to MX you can clearly see the differences,
in that the MX side plates do not work for me.
Just my opinion, but it's a no brainer !
Even the few that have sponsors on them, well you can't
really make heads or talis of them anyway, & still the
SX plates work & look to me more finished & professional.
Just look at a SX photo of Reed's bike. the #22 rings loud & clear........
In MX, a similar photo looks funny, "deformed" to me.
Bigger is better!

Just put an old KX number plate behind the existing plate and all your worries will be gone.

Points taken, thanks for the feedback. It was a challenge for everyone this weekend, figuring out who was where, and the small numbers made it even more difficult, no doubt about it.

I remember the good old days when you could tell who a rider was by looking at his side panel # .

All I know is I went to the Freestone national and my contacts fell out midway through the first moto and I had no trouble reading plates.
Did you have trouble during the first motos?

I like 'em.

And I think if it wasn't for this crappy economy, the extra space would be filled with sponsors. Which, if I'm not mistaken, was the point, and once the economy turns I think they will.

(Aren't most of them blank just because nobody has ponied up the sponsorship dollars for the space?)

Maybe make the smaller numbers an option for the teams...if they want/have/need the sponsorship money, they might appreciate the extra real estate on the bike...if they don't have/want/need it, then they can run the larger numbers.

Anyway...

If your not close to the fence it is hard to see them, even in dry weather. I agree bring back the larger numbers..

The teams could easily solve this problem, leave the baby numbered plates w/ the sponsor logos on for the bike shots/photos in the pits and what not, then slap on some real plates with #'s before rolling the bikes to the line.

The sponsors are happy, the fans can see the #'s on the track. Everyone wins.

x2 Scottie, I thought this same thing when we had the last discussion about this.

I had the same trouble at Highpoint and it was a beautiful day. When I did go up close to the fence, they just came bye you faster and the small numbers were hard to see going bye you fast. I don't like the small numbers on the track at all. I never did find a happy medium.

One problem is the bike manufacturers themselves. They aren't making side panels big enough to put the big numbers on.

It's not a rule that they have to be small is it? I thought I saw some guys that were still running larger numbers. Maybe I'm wrong?

They don't have to be small. The rule states a 3" minimum size.

I agree, I dont like them either. But amazingly I agree with Titan. LOL Witht this economy, sponsors HAVE to get more bang for their buck. However I do think that with the sideplates being sponsorship available at such a late date, there were no deals in place with sponsors for this extra signage. And alot of the teams didnt want to give away this space for free and then possibly next year, have to take it back for someone else or simply try and get more money from current sponsor for extra space. So instead most sideplates looked like a rear fender with a ton of little logos on them. Hardly, I would think, a benefit for a sponsor.

Maybe giving teams now a full off season of sponsor negotiations will allow them to use the sideplates to the fullest as was intended. But if teams dont use this space any better than they are right now, I would personally love to have them go back to the full size numbers. But Im old school, thru and thru.
