Road Racing ... now motorcross..

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 3:13pm
I raced motorcross gowing up. Got into Road Racing later. so to get to the question, my shifting on the road racing bikes has been upside down... they call it GPshift for 'one up and five down' as like motorcross bikes which are 'one down and five up'.

Now that i learned to ride GPshift (crashed a couple times on the road course learning) I want to convert my shift fork to GPshift inside my new Yamaha 450F.

Anyone ever heard of that before?

I wish. I actually had two RR bikes at one time and they shifted different. It was interesting to say the least

I have roadraced extensively around the world and and always used "reversed" shifting on my rr bikes. Somehow, I never had any trouble getting on my dirtbike and shifting the regular way. Usually it is easy to reverse the shifting on a streetbike because most use a linkage system that you can easily switch around yet a dirtbike uses no linkage so unless there is something I've yet to learn about mx trannys, you'd be looking at a lot of time and money to rig something up(unless you are/or know a machinist). Good luck!!

It's way easier to tap down to speed shift than hook your toe under the lever and click up especially under acceleration. Remember heel toe shifters, like on HD's? Helps on decel as well.

I found a GP Tech http://www.gptechllc.com/2008-YZ450.html and they can do it but with rear sets. So I had one of the engineers in our office take a look at the above bike and see if we cant rig up something that works w/o rear sets. Would not want to change the geometry of the bike any. We will see how it goes this week. If you guys are at all interested Ill post the Pro/ENGINEER screen shots.

Back in 1980 this guy showed up at a pro am with an air shifter rigged up on his 125 Honda. He had adapted it from a drag bike set up and used his swingarm for the compressed air source. It only lasted a lap or two but he got both holeshots.

I had an electric setup thru the neutral safety switch, worked pretty good, just bump the lever and it slid right into the next hole. I also wired the nitrous through the original start switch.

Thanks TJ755

Rode Triumph's, Bultaco's and many dirt trackers that were right hand shift bikes. Only takes a couple of minutes to acclimate to a left hand side (standard) shift bike. Downshifting for corners by having to pull up on the shift lever on an MX bike really seems like a lot of extra effort. Just ride the bike the way it was designed. Don't " trick fuck " yourself.

I can't believe it took that long for someone to say anything. I'm not quite sure what motorcross is either.
