Off the bike probably Kenny. He was always the sharpest looking rider out there, but obviously that doesn't always translate into racing fitness. Look at Jason Anderson for example, he looks like a normal dude who never worked out regularly (obviously he does), yet he is one of the guys who can always lay it down late in the moto, absolute beast, specially with his riding style.

Tim Gajser is also a beast when it comes to fitness and moto endurance, what he did in the first half of the season this year was insane.

Ferrandis last year was some mindblowing shit..

I also don't understand how Sexton doesn't even sweat after going that pace this year for 30+2.

As DV said, on the bike based on their style, probably Tomac and I think Anderson aswell.

Does anyone else remember how ripped Tomac was back then when he was still training with Ryan Hughes? I'll post a video here. He looks more like a normal fit guy now, but on the bike he might be in his best form ever.. So yeah, as already mentioned in this thread, there is a big difference between off the bike and on the bike fitness.

He doesn’t look very ripped at all in the vid. His stomach looks pudgy soft. These 2 with that low intensity would get fired on a hhg rig real quick. The hottest race ever would be the fittest ever. 125 winner Damon Huffman RC was on a roll no one was beating him. Damon did and made it look easy. 250 class Jeff Emig total Domination and looked like he was in better shape than any pro in the last 15 yrs. Emig is from Missouri tho that gives him a extreme heat and high humidity advantage. Hell I turn 56 in Nov I look like I,m in better shape than the current pros.

Tomac is the most obvious answer, but there was a few times this year where Sexton got off the track and didn't seem like he did 2 laps much less 35 minutes. Riding style I would say helps him some over Tomac.

MX is a motorized skill sport, so it’s difficult to assign a “fittest” title. The top riders are fit but also have 24x7 access to the highest quality training. A completely level playing field may generate a different output than race results, i.e. Marty Tripes: seldom the fittest, often the fastest.

I bet we all have suffered defeat at the hands of “that dude” who looked like he trained at Krispy Kreme but smoked us once the gate dropped. Natural talent can, and does, overwhelm fitness when there’s an engine involved.

i saw Greg Albertyn at a practice track in Fla when he rode for Suzuki with McGrath. No shirt and he was ripped. You could see every muscle in his forearms work like the robot in the Terminator movies.

Fitness and talent together make for a lethal combination. There’s a great story Fro once told about Vegas after an SX finale. Carmichael had won the title the night before, and as Fro’s returning from a night of partying, who does he see in the hotel gym, pounding it out on the stationary bike, but RC. Fro saw that vision and thought “the outdoor season is already over”…

I agree, although the racing now is very different. SX tracks today, while challenging, are fairly cookie-cutter and easily replicated at test tracks. 70’s courses were primitive, broke down quickly, and often devolved into an SX/enduro hybrid. When speeds slowed down, Tripes went faster, all while riding equipment that was temperamental at best.

Admittedly Marty struggled to put wins together over a series, especially as his, uh, mass increased. But man, he was poetry in motion when the flow was on, and beat admittedly more fit racers.

A couple of thoughts. On Eli and Chase, the human body and it's needs change over time. What Eli does and how his body maintains it's fitness at almost 30 is probably quite different than Chase's in his early 20's. I've wondered how much a program like Aldon's tailors to the individual rider or is it more universal to everyone there. I probably have this all screwed up (due to my CRS) but didn't Chase start out training with his Dad, go with a trainer, then back to his Dad again. I read/hear no mention of Sexton's training routine.

JLaw because how could the guy get as drunk as he did and still have epic races such as, Daytona and who could forget Budds Creek. I personally saw him wasted the night before and couldn’t believe how well he did. Shit before practice at Daytona he was throwing up behind one of the signs near starting line! So he had to be in great shape!!
