Any idea what the ballpark figure would be for something like this?

I believe this included a mechanic, some space under the Star canopy and maybe a little spot inside their semi(s) but I don't know if the space was just for the bike and inhouse mechanic.

I also wonder what level of works thickness Star would make available to others in a scenario like this.....especially if all the wrenching is done by one of their own mechanics and nothing internal would potentially be seen by prying eyes.

Should have just claimed them at LLs and would have probably gotten off cheaper.

I would imagine star just charged them cost, meaning they didn’t make money off of it. Whatever it cost to build, parts, wear items would be my guess.

That’s not how Motorsports work. You can have everything we researched and developed for free? Maybe I’m wrong.

$10k per bike, per weekend? I bet that's actually on the low side.

I asked the team and the figure I was given was lower than that.

Seems like they may have had some ’22 bikes sitting around since they only had a portion of their team at the event. Especially if the guys not at the MXoN have received some of their ‘23s already.

Whatever their reasoning, it sure helps solidify their spot as pure enthusiasts of the sport!!!!

They aren't keeping the bikes or tearing them down to see what's inside though?

Good on them if this is true.

It depended on who the rider was, how much support they get from Yamaha in Europe, if they needed a mechanic…etc.

But I was told around $2,500 rental for fairly stock bikes and race bikes were something like $5,0000-$8,000 I think. I know one or two of those included mechancis and space under their semi. As much as it is to ship stuff right now and travel to bring your own mechanic…that’s a pretty damn good deal. Not including the fact that you had a monster of a bike.

This is actually very common in racing, called pay to ride. most of the teams I worked with had something like this in place. usually a bike fee + damage + tires + gas, that would include at least 1 mechanic.

Pun intended?

In Europe teams ask the national federation something between 5k and 10k for the full MXON. Just bike, rider and one mechanic. Brands use the MXON to launch new stuff and sometimes create new patriotic with all kind of flags, but still they aren't involved in covering the bill.

Valentino Rossi at the moment in his GT Racing. He has a personal sponsor who's paying but... If you want names in motocross. In the USA it's harder to have that kind of system (not impossible) but harder because, with the open qualification your paying rider could finish 45th and that ends his day and after five times he will say: Bye I've enough of it. In Europe in MX2 and MXGP it's easier because their are maximum 40 riders on the start list, so your paying rider is always qualified their have been multiple example. Same in MotoGP with the Czech Karel Abraham who kept himself 9 years in MotoGP and 1 year in WSBK. Also now with WorldSX, with the license system they are sure that the paying teams are on the start gate, no surprises of local heroes who are faster than your drivers...

Paying drivers aren't that bad, but you need a competitive system against it that makes that they need to be good enough to be in your series. Just imagine that Bill Gates or Donald Trump are buying themself a place under the PC Kawasaki tent and they get a 450cc factory Pro Circuit bike, the competitive system from open qualifying will make that they won't be in the race.

The majority outside top 20 in points in mxgp and mx2 will have to bring sponsorship to a team. And i know of at least 2 guys in the top 15 in EMX250 who paid a substantial part of this years budget themself/via sponsors

Hmmm. the faster you go.. the more someone pays for it. Makes sense.

But they don’t get to take the bike home, or get to tear it down to examine the secrets.

All they’re doing is riding it, so paying for service and wear items. The team will know within reason how much that bike will cost to ‘make good’ after the event- so parts, consumables, labour.. there’s your fee, plus any unforeseen damage which may occur.
