I went thru my laptop to see what I had... I've raced 97, 98, 99, 01 and 05 but could only find 01 and 05.

1978 MXDN - Hannah vs Mikkola

Their one and only match up, to my recollection. *** The Racer X article of the week of around the 20th Sept 2022, had Both at the 76 MXDN, with Mikkola 3:2, Hannah 16:21***.

I remember predictions of Hannahs expected dominance of Heikki in 1978.

Racer X have that short article up about it, where they wrote that Hannah said to Mikkola that he was going to beat him.

Mikkolas answer was, reportedly: " Let's see if you ride as good as you talk".

The results :

Mikkola - 1:1

Hannah - 5:2

I have high regards for Both riders, but Mikkola just was so, so impressive - no bluster, or BS ever from the man

' Sisu ' is the Finnish word that so Very perfectly describes him.

So for the guys that used to wear the hockey mask style face guards, I'm not even sure what to call them, did you go home after riding feeling like you had been repeatedly punched in the face? I've had some big rocks push in goggle lens and hit my helmets pretty hard. I couldn't imagine just a thin piece of plastic on my face. Were they padded?

The original Scott face mask had just a thin layer of red foam behind the breather slots. The later version, that you can see around Wards neck in the '87 MXDN picture, had it as well.

That presented no difficulty. And, the mask was not up against your face.

I can't recall the brand, it had perhaps 'Uni' as part of its name, as the goggles and face mask were all one piece, and quite wrapped around your face. They had very thick foam, that was up against your face, and that Really was unpleasant. I only used them for a short time, as I got them for free, but, they just were not the right thing for hot Aussie weather. They had a unique, clip in lense though, I think with mini versions of the then typical press studs that held in the peak / visor to your helmet.

The Yoko face / chin guards you can see on both Mikkola and Hannah, then the JT one, really set into motion more face protection, leading onto real, dirt oriented full face helmets.
