How many riders here rode a YZ465?

I need your impressions on this bike. Did it turn good , how was the power and how was the suspension. Part of the reason I am asking is that I saw a good rider smoke the 450cc class a few months ago!

Raced one in the 500cc State Titles in 1980 when I was 16. First open classer I ever rode.

The power is what I remember the most. Awesome. It did not handle any where as good as my Fox Shox fitted 1980 CR250, so I chose to ride the 250 in the "All powers" class.

My Rm250 out handled my Rm465 also. But I love the power of the 465 engines , very smooth and revs out on top.

I rode the 465 that my dad has the other day lazy mans bike. I'll stick to my 80 model Cr 125

1997 I squeaked top ten 40plus in dist 7 on a 465.
Great power, fair brakes.
The shock under the tank made it feel top heavy.
The rear, for me, was the weak link.
Braking bumps, unseen ruts or holes would kill me.
Some one called it the yamahop syndrome.

Had it 3 years, raced it 2, put 1 set of rings in it.
All in all, great bike.
Sorry I had to sell it............

The 490's have a jetting problem if you don't modify the squish chamber, they will detonate & ping or size!


It's an easy fix if you have a lathe or know of a machine shop!


I race EVO-Vintage & there are serval guy's that have the 465's that love them, both of them have an Ohlins rear shock. I can't tell you how they turn as I haven't ridden them.

I have ridden a 465 quite a few times and did not like it. The power was OK but it didn't turn well for me. I felt cramped on it too but that could be because I am 6'3". There are ways to fix everything on that bike though, like a better shock and different triple clamps to move the bars forward. One of my current race bikes is a '83 YZ490 and it is a much better fit for me. I did have to raise the bars, get a taller seat, fix the cylinder head, and revalve the shock and forks to make everything work right for me. Of course, neither one is as good as my '81 Maico 490 ;-)

I had a 490 in 86

there was a tech update from Yamaha that involved cutting the slide and changing the needle. I ended up running 114 race gas and that cleaned it up pretty good.
I also rode a 500 Honda a lot that year and it did most things better than the Yam but for some reason I could ride the yam faster longer and it was much more stable in the high speed stuff.

Cool to hear you were putting it to the 4 strokes on a old bike! Its more the rider than the bike. D7 40+ A or B?

A friend let me ride his 490 off roading at Tower City PA. To me it felt like a really really fast 250 as it liked to be revved.

This is my 465. I love it. I put yz490 front end on it to open it up and put some CR High Protapers on it and ASV levers. New seat foam. Feals much more modern.

Fox shock was put on. $700 but cheaper than an Ohlins which is $1200.

At the time it was just 40plus.
You ran with novices and Vet A riders alike.
I really thought I could pull top 5, but a few experts turned 40
halfway thru the season and kept it real.

Bet I could still holeshot a few to this day on that bike, 2 or 4 stroke, any cc.
It was that strong.

The '80 model 465 was much more explosive in the power delivery. The '81 was a bit mellower and easier to ride. Kenny Keylon was the AMA 500 Rookie of the Year in '81 in the nationals on his Yamaha support '81 YZ465.
