I see a lot of bike builds doing different coatings on the engine (cerakote is the popular one) and even polishing. Are there any real benefits to these finishes?
I only have racecar experience, but while some ceramic coatings will keep varying amounts of heat in, some impressively so like Zircotec, the general "make this and that bronze and matt black this bit" with Cerakote is just a visual thing. Yeah it's technically a protective coating, but really, does it need it? Nope.
Doing it because you like the look of it is fair enough, but anyone trying to sell you on it for any real world gain is pulling your leg. Personally for cases / cylinders I'd rather have the majority vapour blasted or similar to get it properly clean, then maybe if you wanna feel fancy then coat (or just replace) the clutch and ignition cover and coat some little bits, we all wanna feel factory sometime, but it'll only be visual.
Some of them tarnish and blacken or corrode very quickly and have to be protected.
I don't think anyone claims that this or that coating will improve or reduce cooling.
Modern coatings do seem to shed dirt more easily than the older stuff- or the bare castings.

Nothing wrong with that, I'm doing a fair bit of Cerakoting and Vapor Blasting right now. I've been messing around with some Hydrographic Film Transfer lately as well. I am in the process of designing a dedicated tank for it.
Had my yz250 done while it was getting rebuilt.
you mean your motor and everything isnt covered In a layer of spooge and perm-dirt?
