FC350 oil change

So did the first oil change on my 22 FC350.

So before putting the oil filter in, the manual says to lay the bike on its side, fill up the oil filter chamber 1/3 with oil as well as filling the oil filter up.

is this a must?

You could soak the oil filter in oil for a bit and be be ok to put it in without the 1/3. I would do one or the other

I’ve never done it. I put a filter in dry, fill the oil up and start it for about 30 seconds then top the oil off. Also don’t forget to pull the screen and clean it.

Why not? Bike is already laying there on it's side anyway. I lay mine over twice during the oil change process. (Handlebar ends on dirt bike stand)
Some automotive manufactures recommend filing the oil filter before installing to prevent dry starts.

I do, I add appx 50ml to the cavity and drop it in. tThe oil filter is over twice as large as a Japanese brand and it takes time to fill on start up following change… i would rather be safe than sorry to the top end of my motorcycle.

I usually just crank the bike for 10 seconds holding the kill switch after and oil change.

They dont want excess friction due to lack of lube.

I think with modern mx bikes lube up top is critical.
I would suggest pre oil the filter, pour some in the cavity and then crank it over before it fires up.
It may be over kill, but how much does a new head and cam cost ???

Just fill the filter with oil and when it starts soaking thru stick it in there and put the cover on. Basically same effect as filling the cavity 1/3.

Its not like the top end is bone dry after an oil change lmao. Just fill up the inside of the oil filter and pop it in. Its not like you take it to limiter first start up after you drain and change it.

I do it because how hard is it to take a minute to lay the bike on the side and fill it? Find it easier to put the drain bolts and screen back in as well while it’s on its side.

They recommend you do it because it can collapse the oil filter if the cavity is empty on startup. I dont know if its the location of the filter in the system, the type of filter, or some specific KTM thing, but I’ve seen (had) it happen even all the way back to the RFS type engines.

You can just lean the bike over on the stand without laying it on the floor. I don't like to put all that pressure on the throttle tube by laying it over.......just lean it sideways a little and pour some in.

This is 100% correct. I saw this happen to a 450 and it burned up the head. The filters are long and skinny and can collapse together. I drop mine in my ratio rite filled with oil and soak it first. You can also fill the cavity and achieve the same thing. There is a reason KTM wants you to do this.

Don’t know the fluid mechanics of it, but i’ve seen it happen. Thing looks like a crushed empty soda can when you pull it out.
