My 3rd race. 1978. My first 2 races I raced the 100cc class and the bike was way too big for me, ( I was 11) and everyone else in the Schoolboy class was 15-17 years old. For race 3 My parents got me an 80 and I got a top 5 the first time out.
Claverack NY. June 78
I rode in the 100cc class for a short time, almost bought a JWRP Mini Elsinore, but I decided to jump to 250's so we got a 1978 Elsinore CR250 ... I was 14 at that time.

I love this post. Keep 'em coming!

My first trophy was pretty uneventful; I took 4th place in my 3rd ever race in 80 Beginner, 1985. A better story comes from my first win, later that same year. My dad took me to the track, watched me ride practice, and then left to go fetch my sister from home. We figured I'd have a few hours before the first race. Well, my class was early in the program and I had to go to the starting gate before they got back to the track. I wasn't even sure I was supposed to ride without a parent there, but I did. I got a decent start, passed a few guys, and found myself in the lead. On the last lap, I noticed my dad and sister cheering me on. I ended up going 1-3 for the overall. I'll never forget it.
Out front, looking around in astonishment ... HOLY SHIT I'M IN THE FRONT OF THE PACK!

I didn't even expect people to jump in honestly.

First Race.

Random night race at Mosier Valley, raced the supermini class because I was on a big-wheel, so I couldn't race beginner. Had only been to a motocross track one other time in my life, and was so unprepared that I didn't even have numbers, so I had to bust out the tape to make a "number" 11.

Somehow got second place, and the biggest trophy I've ever received. You could say that I was naturally talented, or more likely because we were double gatted, some kid with an actual number 11 got shafted in scoring.

My first bike was a 1975 XR75, we modded it, but the YZ80's still held certain advantages.
They sure did. 2 stroke madness was here to stay with the yz80...until 2000 when the yz250f came out! Ironic. I bought one too!!

First race ever,

1979, hare scramble near Rome georgia, sponsored by dick mack yamaha.

Ran 200b on my 1976 yz 100, with an air shock kit and a Dg radial head.

Work boots, jeans, insulated underwear shirt, k-mart open face helmet with a magoo-like duck bill.

Shotgun lemans start.

Those guys were so freaking fast.

A guy I went to high school with, mark brown, won the over all.

I Finished so many laps down.

Two riders in my class = second place

We installed a button mag on the XR, and the first Sunday out we were at Saddleback park ... At the gate of the second moto the bike wouldn't start!
From that time forward, we charged the battery after each practice/moto

My Pop's used to run Hare Scrambles on his Harley knuckle head.

When he lived in Pomona, he would ride out to wherever an event was, he would strip the lights off of his bike and race.

One weekend at Carlsbad an injured friend asked if I wanted to race his 1977 CR125 that probably had every mod that DG made for the bike.
I pulled the holeshot and then on turn 4 it happened, (the first overhead walking bridge) the bike just stalled, I sat there kicking the thing and it finally started and I made it to the ledge and it stalled AGAIN!
I submitted to limping back to the pits. I looked it over and found that the problem was a cracked fuel filter that allowed the carb to run dry at hi rpm's

What it meant to you and how long did it take for you to achieve it? Talk story.
Took me 5 years to get my first trophy

I have about 10 total. It’s not really that they mean alot it’s the stories that come with them. Almost like a picture, they are worth 1000 words. Each one has its own story and memories tied to it.
