BIRMINGHAM | A billboard that was put up by the Alabama Freethought Association is causing debate, with some saying the sign reading “Imagine No Religion” is offensive and should be removed.
The billboard along Interstate 20 near Pell City was placed there by the association as part of a national campaign by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The background of the sign is of a stained glass window with the words sung by John Lennon in the song “Imagine” on top.
Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-
president of the foundation in Madison, Wis., said Friday that the sign will be up for a month. The group had wanted a billboard near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, but Lamar Advertising declined.
“We got censored by Lamar,” she said.
“It was offensive to me,” said Tom Traylor, general manager of Lamar Advertising in Birmingham. “We have the autonomy to decide what’s in the best interests of our company and what’s offensive. I don’t think it was the kind of message we wanted to stand behind.
“You have to know what area of the country you’re in,” he said. “A heavy percent of our population is Christian. That’s who we cater to.”
Gaylor said the sign, about 10 miles east of Birmingham, is rented from Bentley Advertising.
Freethought association member Pat Cleveland of Talladega said she’s gotten about 50 irate calls about the billboard, but that the group’s intentions aren’t hostile. The Talladega Daily Home reported that a petition drive has been started to take it down.
Cleveland, 63, said the calls she’s received are “ugly” and “hateful.”
“They said I ought to be where John Lennon is, burning in hell. I’m sorry if anybody is offended, but I’ve seen billboards that offend me, like ones that say ‘Jesus is Lord’ over Talladega.”
“I’m proud to be an American,” Cleveland said. “I refrain from any religion. I’m a good person. I pay taxes, abide by the law and I’m good to my family. I help people. I believe hands that help are better than hands that pray.”

Sounds like some of these folks see contemplation and serious thought as a real threat to their beliefs. Didn't realize that religion was so fragile in this country.

The second one is different. It's accusing anyone who doesn't believe as they do of felony behavior. They also seem to imply that the authors of the sign will engage in civil war if things don't start going their way.
i saw a bumper sticker the other day that said: jesus called: he wants his religion back!
"Stop the porn and be reborn"
-Jesus
Im having a real hard time finding an exact quote from the bible of Jesus saying that. You would think misquoting Jesus would be a big no-no, but the sign is there clear as day

You should read their bullshit here on Vital.
I live in Birmingham and this is the first I heard of it. Wow, 50 whole people are all "butt hurt."
I think you'll be surprised to find that most Christians go about their lives as any other person does. They go to work and do their jobs and try to be good citizens, like I hope most of you do. Most of us don't waste our time protesting people's right to free speech or expression.
That one's my favorite. It was Adams and Hancock, I think, but it wasn't written down. It was a response to a British military man who asked them to bow to their sovereign king, the King of England.
That was their response.
Keep in mind this was in 1775, before we even declared independence, much less after the Constitution had been written, etc.
And it was hearsay.
Weird how people try so hard to latch onto things that they quote out of context and the like.
I think it's still going through court.
If we eliminated all the litigation that is based on religious tenets, everyone could have "free" health care.

This one is on the 105 on the way to LAX, so I pass it every couple of weeks.
I've never called to complain about it, because I believe in freedom of speech.
But it is interesting how they misrepresent science and atheism to state that it's a belief that nothing made everything. That's not it at all.
Oh well.
The thing about these billboards is that, with the atheism one, they're only preaching to the choir. They're not going to actually earn converts because atheists by and large are atheists because they have looked at all sides of the issue already, and that's where the conclusion led them.
When you're in a country of 75% Christians and almost 90% religious people, you have to decide to be an atheist. You're not born into it.
So it's a waste of money. But the billboard company is probably hurting in this economy, so good on them for getting money.
