Why is it year after year there is so many empty gates in the mxgp? Is it lack of prize money and expensive entry, or is there more to it?
Looks so silly on tv that the top level sport is run like that. There is so many fast riders across Europe and enough to fill the gates, and I’m sure the riders want to win races and championships with full gates not 25ish odd blokes, so why do the promoters not try make it work? Am I missing something?

Lots of guys injured , and a lot of guys retired, so its gonna be thin... obviously you could gate fill with locals, but they ride the EMX classes.
Plus it was a rescheduled race, Mantova next week will be better , hopefully.
If you wanted to race, and you have €1,000, you’d be in the GP.
No wonder some of MXGP riders like to come to the USA and race, It would be my goal to race in the US and do the nationals and SXs and get the heck away from the MXGPs.

i prefer 25 on gate with no lappers and great racing over a full gate and see 25 riders get lapped at least once .. dont see what to like about that at all

Neither Husky nor Kawasaki have a title sponsor.
Suzuki is gone
Cairoli has gone , Tonus has gone, , Stribos has gone, Simpson Before that, Desalle and Paulin , Searle
Herlings, Febvre, Jonass, Monticelli, hurt , plus a couple of others over the weekend.
Plus it was Le Touquet this weekend as well, so Paturel and the MotoBlouz team were there.
Last year, i think there were 30 on the gate at the opening round, and i think there were 10 world champions, and all bar a couple had won GP's
Quality over quantity, is always better IMO , but you cant gatefill for the sake of it. Otherwise you get what we have in AMA , where guys are getting lapped from half distance , which is as bad IMO.
Covid has hit budgets , for sure, we are seeing teams running a 250 and a 450, instead of a bunch of riders in 250, it all adds up ( or subtracts)
I remember a few years ago , the slowest guy was Klement Gercer, and he was an MX3 World Champion.
World Championship is not cheap, and there is a limit to who can do it .
On the other hand EMX is thriving, whether you think it makes sense running to MX2 rules is anyones guess, but the idea of having one combined class , and taking 40 guys works on paper, in the same way that combining coasts does in SX... some say it will make rides go away , until it happens, we will never know
I guess what I'm getting at is, if you have all the best, what does it matter if the gate is full or not?
Joke got you.....
