We took the new to me 2017 TRD Taco Offroad again yesterday. We went on a “Beginner” run my friend put on. I had no idea what a stock Tacoma could go up / over. I clunked the skid plates pretty hard more than once, no harm no foul. But now am looking at ways to more clearance / bigger tires, on board air etc. Let’s see what you guys have and what mods you’ve done.

Meet the long bed 83. My dad bought it new and I purchased it from him when I was in high school. Sitting on 35s with 4.11 gearing. This thing will go anywhere I want! And it gets great gas mileage 20-22.

Haha…it’s been mostly a go to high school vehicle (for my daughters), a grocery getter, some light duty 4x / exploring (forest or blm land) or going to Folsom lake to hang out for an evening on the shoreline.

Bought it 4 years ago - stock ‘01 Wrangler 4.0L straight 6 - automatic.

Updates:
2 inch spacer lift, wheels, 31’s, off-road lights (the little baja designs work really well), LED replacement headlights, hard top, cheap kenwood receiver and speakers.

If you want to keep your suspension stock, 255/85 R16 (33's) will fit on your truck without rubbing. Just be prepared to take a huge hit on MPG when you add bigger wheels/tires.

Love these yota’s. Haven’t lost their value either.

You’re saying I can put 33’s on the stocker without a body or suspension lift, no wheel well trimming, and not have rubbing issues ? Just put on bigger tires ? There were a couple Tacoma’s there on 33’s, one had a 2” body lift and the other one had suspension work. Have you done that ? Any pictures ?The research I’ve been doing says there’s problems with them hitting the control arms, you need offset rims or wheel spacers (which seem cheesy ) I’m curious how close it is thanks. I know the mpg and power will be affected with bigger tires, but the mileage isn’t that red hot anyway, and the truck isn’t going to win any races either. It’s more of a toy than a daily commuter or work truck.

My first car was a brand new 93 Bronco. I had it about 4 weeks until I tried jumping it up a step up at a construction site leveling out lots for houses in Blackhawk, CA. My gf and 2 of my buddieswere hot boxing it. Then one of my buddies dared me to launch the step up from one plot to the other. So to impress my girl I railed that shit. Blew out the front end. Got chewed out by the foreman when showed up for work, and then....he called my Dad. I aired the shit out of that truck and if I had a downside to land on I would've been good to go. Good times.
Needless to say I stuck to moto after that. 4×4 and rock crawling is too slow for me.

You might want to check out tacomaworld for info on tires, lifts, cab mount chopping and the like.

It has kept its value for sure. I have people throw offers at me almost every time I drive it.

It has a small amount of rust on the bed that I was in talks with Newmann about before he past away. I really wanted to ship it to him and have him do the paint and body. RIP JOE.

Nice. Dood, where is that? I was going to guess Truckhaven, but it doesn't look like Ocotillo Wells.

You ain't lying.... I've seen some even right next to a highway that look like you'd need a winch to get up... during a summer dry spell

Calico. In the hills behind the ghost town. Part of it was the Phillip Loop trail, with some other stuff thrown in. We’re scheduled to go to Ocotillo again The first weekend in March for the TDS thing. Our in laws have jeeps and go every year. Depending on which trail they do I might hop in one of their built Jeeps and leave the stock Tacoma in camp 😂. This is our son in laws jeep.

Nice.👍 I’m lucky to live where I do but I am jealous of the space you have, and believe it or not, different seasons. When you work outside all day hot dry and sunny gets old after about the 325th day in a row. Sometimes a change of weather is welcome. Ok everyone who’s neck deep in snow right now tell me to STFU Laughing Laughing

We had a Third Gen Tacoma but it couldn't pull the trailer we wanted to get. We took it all over but I got bored of standard off roading in 4 wheel vehicles. Now I have a Ram 2500 4x4 and it doesn't have the abilities of the 4x4 Off Road Tacoma but I don't need that so far for what I've done.

I see you were in Calico. Been there a lot. Only my wife has a bike right now because one of us has to watch our son when riding. This was Saturday in Stoddard

Yes, skinny 33's will fit on an off-road trim with the OEM wheels without rubbing under normal conditions. I ran a set of bfg km3's for around 50k with no issue. I cannot speak under extreme wheeling situations. Under full articulation they may rub some. Again they must be 255/85r16's. Here is a good discussion on them. Tacomaworld Discussion Link

Edit: you may have to remove your mud flaps if you have them. It appears they have already been removed?

Thanks, lots of options ($) to ponder. I like the skinnier tire theory

I have a 2500 (3500 now ?, I put new springs and lots of other upgrades to carry the camper) too but it has 2 tons of camper in the back so it doesn't wheel so good lol. It's good enough to camp away from the masses though.

We got rid of our toy hauler and went with this. Easier for us with new family. Lots of usable space and storage.

Thought I’d put up a pic of my Jeep. I took it out last weekend for the first time after I built it this winter. Still have a few things to do until it’s done.
