I remember Roger on a podcast saying his talent was up there with the best but he was just more motivated for the X games type stuff and the financial rewards where better than a pro life.

I think that was the daytime qualifier in 2006, either way it was badass.

Dude has won in nearly if not all off road disciplines he's had a go at, 2 and 4 wheels. Man he even jumped out of a plane with a can of red bull and no parachute! Absolute legend and one off talent that may never be seen again

I don't think he is. He went pro, did it his way, grab a couple of titles, moved on to other things and achieved plenty of success in just about everything he did.
They say he won against no competition, i said he was a kid racing men and beat them his rookie season, they say he didn’t win any big bike races and didn’t get popular from moto, so because he didn’t do anything worth noting on big bikes his moto career is overrated. They referenced he’s no different then a Bogle, Hahn, Mookie because they all won a regional title, just like TP. Total disregard for his skills. Even going as far to say bogle was more successful because his national win in 450s

Your buddies are either super young and don’t remember the young pastrana (80/125cc) he sent/won those small bikes.. or Cade clason fans😂😂
and for your buddy that says Bogle is better than TP… that is the dumbest thing I have heard in a long time!!! For real that is pure ignorance and you should punch him in his face for me😂😂
The respect he gets from his peers of the era.. they all knew he was a bad dude in moto..

James and Ricky would have won far fewer races if Travis had devoted himself to moto. I'm not sure he was more talented than James, but he was more than Ricky.

RC had the purest hatred for losing, not sure about the other two.

On WTS he said that Ricky had made racing so hardcore that it wasn't fun anymore. He wasn't enjoying racing and freestyle was a way that he could actually have friends. I thought that was pretty interesting. His personality didn't fit the pro mx world. This seems like the biggest factor in his decision to quit.

Ricky, James, RV, and others have told horror stories surrounding the pressures of competitive racing. Eventually it becomes a job, and the mental stress takes its toll. Travis decided early in his career that he wasn’t willing to make those sacrifices, even with the talent contend for titles.

For most racers, a championship represents the ultimate achievement. For Travis, MX and SX were stepping stones to something bigger. The guy just wouldn’t be pigeonholed by a factory contract or ludicrous training schedule.

Your friends are ignorant then. Pastrana didn’t just win in 125 supercross, he also won the 125 nationals his rookie season, which is something Bogle never got close to doing (and Jett Lawrence didn’t achieve either, by the way). Ask your friends what other riders have been 125/250 national champions in their rookie year, that’ll tell you what league to slot Travis into.

Don’t let his short Moto career or lack of big bike success fool anyone. He was clearly going to be a title contender in the big bike class if he could figure out how to stay healthy. He couldn’t, but that’s nothing new in this sport. Oh and he also had the lure of going off and doing his own thing in freestyle where he could transcend the sport and become the biggest action sports icon ever.

To the original question: Is Travis Pastrana Over-Rated?

My response as a 58 year old male Californian that remembers the OG X-Games Bad Ass that launched his 125 in to the sea…

“Are you fucking high?”

True, and most of his injuries were doing one off jumps and other rowdy stuff that had nothing to do with training/racing. The Whiskey Throttle pod/youtube is well worth the time.

It had to have been the daytime qualifier, Pastrana crashed in the whoops besides Tedesco in the heat race.

I really would love to see what he would have done had he stayed focused solely on racing.
He hated training as it was back in the day....with what the training consists of now? Not a chance in hell. Like I said in my previous post, imagine him going to train at Aldons? I'd give it 2 days tops....and that's being generous. The sport has changed drastically since he raced. A Factory letting there star rider go race X Games? Not a chance in hell. There is a reason all the top guys retire in their primes. Can't say I blame them either. Look at RV. He's a completely different person without all the stress. Great racing now but the off track fun ended after RC got hardcore into training. The days of the GOAT saying if he did his practice motos good his mom would take him to a little restaurant called Dairy Queen to get a blizzard. 😆

For those that say he hated the training and grind of MX you really need to pay close attention in the Whiskey Throttle episode. He never says that. He said he needed to keep it interesting and fun. Travis was never out of shape unless he was injured enough to not be able to train.

The biggest thing I learned about TP in that episode was, even he says he wasn't the best, he was just more driven. The guy says "you can always go faster." That's a thought process that 99.5% of people in this world can NOT understand. The guy's most valuable trait in industry is he is a FIERCE competitor.

Overrated? Not a chance.

He was the last guy to come out and take it to the best as a kid. Nobody has done that since.
