Kudos to the teams (TEAM FACTORY HONDA) that is smart enough to boycot the gay ass fishing boat little numbers.

ProCircuit might want to follow suit since they are not putting any recognizable sponsor logos on the side plates and nobody even knows the riders numbers.

Just saying.

its funny.... back in like 1978 the FIM ruled that the small side numberplates had to be moved more towards the rear of the bike and made larger since they weren't real visible.
Now, all the manufacturers are moving more towards the pre - 78' style of side plates.
I know with transponders now it becomes less of an issue.... but the fans still need to see what number the rider is to identify him sometimes. The front numberplate should be the one to go - it gets covered in roost anyway.

Drop the permanent rider numbers or drop the fishing boat side number plate numbers.

One or the other. Does not matter to me.

I just like knowing who won the race before I drive 8 hours home from a National.

I don't know that they're necessarily gay, but it would be nice if they were wrapped around on the lower half of the curve of the plate. When the bikes are laid over in the corner, they disappear pretty quickly over the curve of the silencer.

No one is really using them to their full potential. I did see one set that was a good use of space, I think it was on Alex Martin's Ti Lube Honda... Pictures GuyB?

A bit of the black Red Bud mud on the front plate and even i can't easily pick out a rider, especially after changing gear colors between motos.

I want BIG side plate numerals!Angry

They are horrible for spectators IMO. You can't see any logo's anyway unless they are sitting on the stand.

The rulebook says they are supposed to be on the lower rear corner of the number plate. Most people aren't putting them there.

The larger logos won't appear until the money given by the sponsor is large enough to warrant it.

I've done a couple of privateer bikes with small numbers on the sides, and you can make the logo quite large and very visible if you want to.

A team does not want to fill the largest advertising space that just opened up on the bike unless they are receiving the commensurate amount of money.

Agreed! This is mx, not freestyle mx. The numbers are susposed to do there purpose in the first place. To identify a rider. A little roost on the front and like another said, a gear change beetween motos?? The guys go so fast anyway its tougher to read them, especially if there is a battle beetween spots. Kinda dumb to go to sponsor logos and mini numbers. Really not cool. I know times change, but this is getting all about marketing and sponsors anymore. JMO.

X1,000,000,000,000,000

Freakin lame as fuck. Stupidest idea since the square wheel. Everyone has made great points on this so far and I feel they really need to get rid of that new rule and go back to real numbers.

What good are transponders when the live wire doesn't work 80% of the time? Plus, does anyone really have a live wire thingy synched with their t.v. when they watch the races on tv? Whether watching it on tv or in person you can't tell who is who, especially when looking at guys who ride for the same team and are forced to wear identical gear (e.g., Pro Circuit). I actually LIKE the matching team gear, but I want to be able to distinguish between the various riders and those lame ass number plates aren't cutting the mustard.

Someone please change this rule yesterday.

I say put their NICKNAME on the plates...

"RC"
"POTO"
"BUBBA"
"SCUBA STEVE"

Far more fun and entertaining....thats marketing!

To build a bigger fan base and keep the spectators coming back for more they need to know whats going on. Small numbers = bad idea!

Totally agree. KTM started it and sadly the rest follows. As someone who follows the sport, I can pick a rider, sometimes even by his riding style. The average spectator has no idea, though.

What will suck is when the wannbees that want to look like pros start running them. Local tracks don't use transponders to score and will have a hard time scoring.

If youre having trouble reading the numbers at the actual event, the problem isnt the size of the numbers, you need to get your eyes checked out. I had no problem reading numbers at freestone, even after losing my contacts.

Makes sense, I guess.

Thus far, the only team logo that is truly visible on the side panels (on TV) is Geico-Honda. The rest are useless.

I really had a hard time reading the plates mid moto. Maybe it is something I will get used too, but I found myself all day trying to figure out who was who at red bud. There were some who still had the readers digest large font...I like that.

They look horrible.

That was one of the best things about motocross, with a quick glance at the number you can know who's out there, even from far away. Riders were instantly recognizable.

This is something that should be changed back asap, who was really asking for this change anyway?
