The way it should be! Some guys race their entire lives and never earn it , so when you do......wear that #1 proudly Mr Herlings.

I can't understand why the reigning champion wouldn't run the #1 plate. It's hard earned and even if most fans know who the current title holder is, there will always be some who don't know.. With the #1 plate, they can see who it is. I've always wondered why GP champions continued to run their original number the following season.

It's mainly to do with merch etc. Career numbers. Which I hate

Noob question here as I don't watch a ton of MXGP. Is it like AMA with career numbers? Does he keep 84 no matter what? Or could someone else run 84 this year?

All the way back to Pichon on the Suzuki 2 stroke days I guess.. Everts always won with 72, Ramon and Philipaerts stayed with 11 and 19. After that we got the Cairoli wave all with 222. Febvre stayed with 461 after 2015 and Gajser always kept 243 the last few years. Herlings did not do it either after 2018.

All did mayby a few races with #1 after they won the title, but didn’t see anyone lined up all season with #1

Last GP champ who did it was Tixier in the MX2 in 13 or 14? Before that also the early zero’s with Jamie Dobb and Michael Maschio on the Kawasaki 125..

You know it’s really long ago when somebody did it on a Kawasaki 125… Grinning

Yep this is exactly my thinking as well.

Something so very hard to achieve even at his level.

Herling's post though indicated it's almost frowned upon (having the balls to do it) to run the 1.

Herlings and Verstappen running the number 1 in 2022 awesome for them and the Dutch fans! Both have iconic numbers to return too if they don't retain the big number 1.

Growing up and idolizing the #1 on Mcgraths bike i dont know how these guys dont run it, I mean how much are they making off there "career" number for merch etc? would be total chump change to there actual salary.

Mickaël Pichon in 2003 (MXGP-class, however, he became worldchampion 250cc in 2002, while Everts became worldchampion in 500cc. In 2003 250cc and 500cc became the same class, named MXGP. Pichon kept #1 while Everts switched to his #72 again.)

Antonio Cairoli in 2006 (MX2-class)
Jordi Tixier in 2015 (MX2-class)
Pauls Jonass in 2018 (MX2-class)

That's about it for the last 20 years.
