I get a lot of emails from here and at the track about jetting for the 2 strokes. Thanks to digger for pointing me in the right direction this is the currant specs. I have for everything. Its easier to start a thread With all the jetting in it to keep track of everything. Your jetting might need tweaked based on your temps and elevation, but this is a good start for you.

**Updated 4/19/23**
'17+ 125/150 jetting (‘22 bikes have a known bog, there is no jetting or carb swap combo yet that takes care of that problem. If or when it gets figured out I’ll update)

Will these jetting specs work on a 13’ 250SX?

No. 17+ 2strokes only. You have a Keihin carb. This is mikuni carbs.

Search the forum for keihin carburated 2t models up to 2016. I dont remember the jetting, but use the NECJ needle from a Suzuki.

Edit: Main: 160. Pilot: 40. Needle: NECJ.

Part #13383-37FE0 for NECJ needle.

I've been ghoosting this thread since it started. Im from Sweden and people here just ride along with Bad jetting.
Jetted my 125 -19 properly and people think its a 150, i shaved the head and put 1mm of squish too.
40:1 motul 800 with ron98/mon94 oxygenated fuel.
HGS Pipe and silencer.
PW 2 1/4turns in from fully turned out.
520 main
25pilot jet
Stock 4.0 slide
S-7 needle jet
42-75 needle put at 2.5 clip
(i use schims to go half clips)
BUT it ran a little lean at 3/4 throttle(tuned by ear)
So i put the needle in my drilling machine and modified it were it was lean( filed down probably 0.001mm).
(see picture, see the needle in the middle were there is some file scratches).
Been riding it hard(A class) for 95 hours, 3 top ends. No problems other than adjusting the air screw every practice.
Been riding all year from 15 to 90 fahrenheit no problem ! Pulls like a train and just keeps going.

Recently got a 250sx -22. Im gonna put AJ's jetting to the test. 5.5 isch cut slide and all the other specs.
Running 40:1 motul 800 with ron98/mon94 oxygenated fuel. I put the needle clip in the 3 position since its 15 fahrenheit outside.

The 250 jetting works like a charm here in Norway Mattias! 3rd clip! It runs lean if you put it in 2nd clip. Last time I rode (at Skee in Strömstad actually) I started out at 2nd clip. That sucked bad. 3rd clip way better. Around 2 degrees celcius!

A 43-75 needle on clip-2 would be the same as a 42-75 on clip 2.5 if you ever want to eliminate the shims.

I think the needles are anodized aluminum. I'd be a little concerned about your mod removing the anodizing and making the needle subject to wear or corrosion. I'm sure you're keeping a close eye on it.

Yeah but thats what I had laying around.
Been running the needle like that for 90hours and no problem. Just sold the 125 so now im on a 250sx.

3 degrees celsius today( 37F), humidity 87%, sea level.
I did as hylo recomended and ran the needle at the third clip pos. Ran great up til between 1/2-3/4 throttle, went very lean and the rpm's took off like a rocket. This with a 500main. I had to bump the pilot back to 35 because 32.5 was too lean.

Will do some more testing with a 540 main.
It sounded better and the rpm didnt take off when I ran it on the stand. (Zero load I know but thats how I jetted my 125 and it runs perfect)
Running 40:1 mix.

I’m picking up a Gas Gas MC 250 on Friday. I’m going to be running nothing but VP T2 in the bike. My question is what would be better option a or b for the jetting on the first page? I was thinking the 5.5 slide would be better for the oxygen in the fuel ? Also it gets pretty cold where I ride. So I was considering option A with the 5.5 slide. What do you think AJ? Thanks for all your time on this post.

I’ve run option A, T2 and a 5.75 slide with no problems. That’s the jetting that’s in the bike right now with the only difference is I’m running T2 with pump gas mixed at 55:1. So it’s more like 47:1 and the bike rips. You’re just going to have to pick one and see how it works for you. For sure be on a 500 main jet. When it gets cold I did have to bump up the pilot to a 35 and move the clip one spot.

Thanks for getting back to me AJ. Do you notice a big difference between running VP T2 and C12 mixed 50/50? I know a can of C12 mixed would go a lot further. Thanks

The C12 not so much. It feels the same as just pump gas. T2 mixed with pump 50/50 is very noticeable over straight pump. I didn’t notice much difference between 50/50 T2 and pump and just straight T2 so I always mix it now to get 10 gallons instead of 5.

Thanks AJ. Do you know what oil T2 has in it or do you just mix what brand you use when mixing 50/50? Thanks again

I just mix my normal amsoil dominator at 55:1 in another can then dump half into another can and fill it the rest of the way with T2.

Hey guys

Been ghosting this post along time and I appreciate all the work you guys have been putting into this, so I finally bought the number 5.0 slide for my 2018 KTM 150 sx. As I don't want to cut my 4.0 slide and keep that one stock.
I have the JD block jet gasket all ready.

So should I just run the slide as it is or should I file the engine side notch to 3mm with a 4mm file?
Is there anything else I should do? Been seeing people drilling holes to the float bowl nutt etc..

Best regards Adam

You can notch it if you want to, it’s a personal preference kinda thing. The holes in the float bowl don’t do anything. People say they feel a different and it’s just in their mind.

If you are using the bike offroad, I would suggest the notch. I think it helps a little bit with the response down low and it also helps the bike idle a little bit better. The notched slide typically will require a 1 step leaner pilot than a non notched slide.

I couldnt feel a thing with drilling holes in the float bowl. Not a single thing. If someone else opens the carb the only thing they’ll notice is a guy thats done mods. Which they may or may not be happy about. The slide i felt though. It felt more responsive as digger said. First I filed one and shaved off a bit more than a 5.75 and them I bought a 5.75 slide. I like the filed one better. It feels a bit different.

I will try the notch as i'm using the bike for both enduro and mx.

Hey again

So I recived the JD gasket kit and the number 5 slide, so i'm about to get everything sorted tomorrow or this weekend Smile
If I decide to do the notch should I go one step leaner on the pilot jet to a 30 from 32.5 as you described on the first page? I don't know what temperatures or elevation you where testing at.

I'm at sea level and it's around 23F to 41F at the moment.

This is my plan

MJ 540 for sand tracks
PJ 32.5 or go to a 30 if I do the notch?
Needle Jet S4
AS 1.5
slide 5.0
Needle 42-74 on the 2nd clip
Needle jet S4
PV 1.75
Fuel mix 40:1

I'm asking because I have very limited time with both work and 3 children at home, so I want to get everything as close as possible and just enjoy my bike.

Thanks

This is my plan

MJ 540 for sand tracks
PJ 32.5 or go to a 30 if I do the notch?
Needle Jet S4
AS 1.5
slide 5.0
Needle 42-74 on the 2nd clip
Needle jet S4
PV 1.75
Fuel mix 40:1

I'm asking because I have very limited time with both work and 3 children at home, so I want to get everything as close as possible and just enjoy my bike.

Thanks
At sea level and those low temps, if it was me I'd start at 32.5 with the notch and also clip-3 on the needle.

I’ll agree with this. I would even order a. 1/2 clip position richer 43-74 needle for those temps, just to have

I got that needle with the bike, so is 74 richer or leaner?
Really don’t understand mikuni needles and what they mean, like 43-72 what’s the 43 and 72 mean? Tamper and length?

I gave and extensive explanation about this on a thumper talk thread. I’m RTV over there.

The KTM manual shows most of the needles they sell. 71-75 is the needle diameter (2.71-2.75mm.). The larger the number the larger the diameter. This is for the thin end of the needle. 42-44 are half clip richer as the number increases so 43 half clip richer than 42. There is also a 44 which should be a full clip richer than the 42. What I don't know is if the taper is different between those 3 or if you get the same taper with the clip positions shifted down the needle.

Nice chart FGR01! So! Here is where my mind stops working and where I start seeing unicorns:

A 43-75 is half a clip richer than 42-75. How much leaner is 42-74? It is smaller in diameter, so it should be richer at first at least, but still half a clip leaner according to the chart.

This confuses me.

The simple, text-book answer would be from this old "what affects what" notional picture we are all familiar with. Note the difference between what throttle area the straight diameter affects and what the clip position affects. So, in your example, you would be richening the area affected by the diameter while also leaning out the area affected by clip position.

In practice, I'd say most people will notice 1 whole clip change more than they will notice a 1-step change in diameter.

I have about 10-12 of the 6BFY series needles and enjoy experimenting and fine tuning for conditions. It's really nice when you get it right there at the sweet spot and can make it really perfect with 1/2 clip changes, etc.

I usually use the needle-chart in my ktm manual. It is an exact copy. The way you explained it made the science behind it make sense with what I think and feel during jetting. I am good at ‘feeling’ what feels right or wrong (lean or rich), but I’ve never looked much at the area of operation or the needle chart. I usually feel my way to a good jetting and thats it, but never thought much about it. Thank you very much for taking the time.

It is actually pretty funny, when I posted the question I was jetting my bike here at home. A bit of experimenting and a whole lot of curiosity. And I wanted to do it properly, without the feeling of having to hurry to get my fill of track time. The temps here in Norway fluctuate a lot from summer to winter and my bike was jetted in 15C celcius. It is now -5C celcius.
Anyways, I tried the difference between 42-74, 42-75 and 43-75. It was bang on with what you wrote. The difference between 43-75 and 42-74 was minimal, but the bike felt rich with 43-75 around 3/8 throttle pos with third clip. 42-74 felt good but not great. I ended up using 42-75 since 43-75 didnt feel as good. I am now content and happy.

Not sure the neighbours are though. A 250 up and down our street maaaany times. Smile
