Technically there is no dark side of the moon because the sun's rays reach every square inch of the moon's surface in a lunar cycle. But there is a side of the moon that never faces the Earth and can never be seen from Earth...

Well thank goodness that's been answered. For a second there, I thought this might get bogged down in pointless semantics.

This. At first, I thought it was a hundred miles away or something. Then I found out that it's 80 meters away and it will take 3 months to get there. Dang, we need better rovers! (Well, the Chinese do!)

Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

I'd like this to be a game changer as much as anybody, but those low-resolution pics can be deceiving at first. I remember when the "Face on Mars" got mapped out with some high-res imaging and it was disappointing.

One would have to conclude that if they’re bothering to drive for two months to check it out that they must be convinced that it’s not just something trivial or a photo aberration.

Yep, all time classic from Scottish Band The Waterboys.
Check out Two LadsHave a Singalong in the Pub on Youtube.
You will thank me. Just sensational especially how loaded the singer is, he must been right in the sweet spot.

Excuse my ignorance but does that mean the moon doesn't rotate on its axis?

The Moon is tidally locked to the Earth so it spins on its axis once for every revolution around the Earth.

So, does that mean it rotates once a month? That`s why one lunar day is a month on Earth?

It means that as it travels around the earth it is rotating at just the right speed that one side of the moon is always facing us. It’s called the ‘dark side’ because we never see that back side. However, if you were standing on that back side you would still have night and day (but you would never get to see the earth)

…I think…

Question for Falcon or someone.

If the Chinese Rover is on the back side, how do they communicate with it? Presumably there must be an orbiting satellite bouncing the signals round to it?

Yeah, but it does rotate if you look from the Sun, and it rotates once in a month mesured from Earth, right?

Yes, I believe so. It does one rotation in the same time that it travels around the earth. Hence the one side of the moon always faces us.
