Like most moto enthusiasts, I have always thought the custom CTI knee braces looked super cool and comfy. I’ve ran multiple brands of off the shelf braces that I bought from mx dealerships for about 13 years now. I’ve never had a knee injury and never want to. How could I get my hands on a set of custom fitted CTI braces? Is it as easy as just going to them, have them measure you and viola? Or do you have to have a connection in the industry to even talk to them? Also, I have decent insurance. Not the best but also not the worst. Do I have to have an existing injury to get my insurance to pay for them? I also see they sell an off the shelf brace online that looks pretty good. Would I be better off with that since my knees are fine? Thanks!

From what I know is once you figure out how to keep it in place (people complain with all braces about them falling down and cti is no different) Also try not to fluctuate in weight or muscle as it is custom.
They sell for about $2800-$3800 CAD depending on model. If you have some decent insurance theyll cover most.

The guys at Ossur will walk you (and your Dr.) through the process of getting insurance to pay for them. I just got a pair zero $ out of pocket. Of course I pay about $1600 a month for insurance so I guess I have paid for them.

Nice! What are they like to ride with? Did you get the process going after you already had an injury?

got a Cti 2 after i blew my acl and an off the shelf cti that was called a cti edge back in 2005.

the cti 2 for the previously injured knee and the off the shelf for the other knee.

both fit well but the off the shelf had a pressure point on the very bottom of the brace where it touches the shin.

going forward to 2018 i got the cti 2 refurbished and it came back brand new. the off the shelf one is not refurbishable and it was replced with an asterisk carbon cell.

the asterisk carbon cell is amazing if fits as well as my custom cti 2.

if i had never injured my knee i believe the carbon cells would be amazing on both knees. since one is injured i feel the cti2 provides a little more protection. fit wise the cti 2 and carbon cell are awesome. but the hinges and the straps on the cti2 seem stronger than the carbon cells.

since i was already injured my doctor in Guadalajara prescribed me the cti2 only for the injured leg and my private insurance covered 85% of the cost back in 2005.

i tried to get the newer version of the cti 2 ots but it was not possible to get it to mexico thats why i went to the carbon cell i also considered Pod k8 but the pod is thicker at the hinge and it makes you ride with a wider stance.

For myself, I’ve had a few pairs of custom CTi. I just go to my ortho doc and have them write a script for “left and right knee instability” then take that to a brace doctor (or whatever they’re called). I have torn my acl and broken tib/fib and ankles in the past. Certain brace docs are setup up to deal with ossur cti and are easier to get the braces through but you can probably go to any brace place or I know ossur can send a rep to you. They measure your legs in several places or they can make casts of your legs then cut them off and send the casts to ossur. I recommend getting the mx kit for each brace, it’s a knee cup and pads on the outside of the frame to save your pants and graphics. They’re thinner than off the shelf and more comfortable as they fit specifically to your legs. I use the asterisk zero g knee brace pants and they never slide down. The cti custom has a lifetime warranty so if you break them they will repair or replace for free. I have decent insurance and it’s been about $150-$300 over the years per pair with mx kit, I think I’ve been running cti since 2009.

pro tip: you do not by default need the custom. custom is exactly that, made for your leg shape/size, but the OTS Cti could very well fit you, well, very well.

CTI braces are way over rated and not nearly as comfortable as Pods or Mobius. As someone who has had 2 custom CTI braces there is no comparison in comfort to the Pods K4/K8's and Mobius and likely many other off the shelf braces. The CTI's have a thin (think sharp) very rigid carbon fiber support on the upper thigh and shin areas and they dig into the leg making them actually quite uncomfortable. The custom fitting is nothing more than a measurement about 5" above and below the knee cap. Don't kid yourself into thinking that this is a highly custom mold for your leg, it's not.

My custom fit $2000 CTI brace is in a landfill somewhere. Thanks Aetna

The tp199s are notably more comfortable and allow you ride ride the bike better than custom ctis. Class is dismissed.

When i got mine they took measurements for 20 minutes and it fits better than pods and the same as the asterisk carbon cell.

I would go to a place where you actually try them and get the best fitting set right there.

I take it you’ve never tried the Asterisk Carbon cell knee brace ?
You owe it to yourself, you’ll have no need for the other mentioned braces.

Not true, first you probably had the wrong flexion stops in and they will definitely feel that way. And the custom fit is accomplished by casting your leg and taking measurements for each knee along with your shape and angle of the individual leg. Not sure who fit you for yours. But sounds like that was your problem. I can't tell I have mine on while riding and these are my 4th set.

An Ossur representative did the measurements and fitting. Their own people can't get it right. Their process is sadly outdated and their design IMO sucks.

Yeah, I’ll pass on those. How did that work out for Keefer? I don’t feel braces mess with my riding at all. If anything it’s nice to have something in between my leg and the bike.
