if you stop on the track, you get your fastest lap taken away

as for qualifying for counting for both races..... ask Jeffrey Herlings how it would feel if you gave him 30th gate pick for race two at the last race. How fair would that be?

as for Dylan himself, everytime i've spoken to him and seen him, he's been having a great time and enjoying himself immensely. He seems to be having a good time with the 114 team and luckily the weather has been great here so he can enjoy this region as well

It's not that the first race isn't important.

At the very 1st race he attended he struggled with his setup (suspension/shock/bib mousse) and just never felt comfortable on the bike, so he didn't want to risk pushing it and end up on the ground. He used the time he had to get more familiar with the track to get more comfortable on the bike as he knew he would get better when the gate dropped for the races. He did learn that the guys over there really push it in qualifying and aren't afraid to wreck in order to get a good lap in for their gate pick since it counts for both motos. He also didn't have any information as to how the whole system works over there. Apparently you can't stop once qualifying starts or your fast lap gets taken away?

The track is apparently very tricky as well. When you think there's going to be traction there's none. Really hard pack with pebbles on top. Don't have that around here, so that took some getting used to.

Dylan has never been the greatest at qualifying, and that's fine up here where the class isn't as deep as he knows he'll be able to work his way up through the pack.

Personally, I don't think it makes much sense that a qualifying time counts for both motos. It does make sense for moto one since the gate order needs to be filled out somehow, and basing them off the points standings just wouldn't be fair. For the second moto you're being rewarded with a gate pick based on a qualifying lap no matter where you finish or don't finish the race which is the real important part.

I think that's just an MXGP thing? Every other series I know of select their gate pick for moto 2 based on where they finished in the 1st moto, not qualifying. It's not necessarily a bad thing, just different. Even at the provincial/local level gate picks for moto 2 is based on where you finished your 1st moto.

The good news is that he learned and improved his qualifying time for his 2nd race. Now he just needs to get some better starts to try and make his life a little easier.
The current system of qualifying for gate picks via the fastest lap time in timed training is just an unfortunate consequence of the temporary one day format due to covid.

Normally in the 2 day fromat it would be your fastest time in timed training that decides your gate pick for the qualifying race and it's your position in that race that gives you the gate pick for the 2 main motos. It's a much better system.

But at the moment, for those that aren't good at putting in a fast time in timed training like Dylan Wright and Ben Watson, it sucks.

Hopefully we'll return to the normal 2 day format next season and then we get to see more racing too!

Will they be going back to the 2 say format? The consensus seems to be that most of the riders prefer the 1 day format?

Seems that the 2 day format makes more sense in terms of qualifying/gate pick.

He probably wouldn't be happy because he's so used to the MXGP system, but IMO, it would be plenty fair. Happens all the time in other series (crashes, mechanicals, etc.) the guys line up and make the best of it. Again, it's not necessarily bad, just a different method of qualifying. That's all.

Regardless, it's been fun watching the races and hopefully we'll be able to watch Dylan race the MXGP series full-time in the future.

I think the sponsers would prefer going back to the 2 day format as they get more exposure and ultimately they will call the shots.

Qualified 14th today.

The class is deep. He was less than a second from qualifying in 6th and 1.1 out of 5th.

Just needs a good start to battle in the top 10.

Let's go Dylan!

Got his first top 10.

Finished 9th in moto 1 was closing in on Lupino for 8th.

Great job Dylan.

Edit: I think if it wouldn't have been for the lapper he would've gotten around Lupino for 8th. At one point he was 7 seconds down from Lupino.

He can't possibly be racing back here next year, can he? Clearly he's a world class rider and should be over there full time.

He's under contract with GDR for next year, but that could change if the right opportunity presents itself.

The problem is that it would leave GDR without a title contender up here. It's complicated.

That said, he belongs in MXGP.

Solid improvements. In Mantova he'll be even better but the top 7 are tough. He's pretty much becoming the best of the rest it seems

To be fair he got a pretty good start but he still managed to pick off a couple of spots and like Mav said was closing in on another one. Solid ride.

Great ride MR Wright!

He proved at the MXDN and those GPs he belongs at the MXGP.

He definitely is on team radars i guess right now.

Yes a great ride in moto 1. Only 2 seconds behind Prado in 7th. Good start certainly helps but he has good pace and to be able to move is pretty exciting.

Started the 2nd moto in 17th and worked his way up to 10th.

9-10 for 9th overall.

Great job Dylan!

Edit:

MXGP 1: 19th o/a
MXGP 2: 15th o/a
MXGP 3: 9th o/a

If he had good starts he could run right outside top 5 which is actually incredible.

Unpopular opinion, give him Watsons bike and a year of training for the GP’s and he has better results. And Watson is top 10 material.

Tough to not override the track today. He did well to get a good result and not throw it away trying to impress. Looking forward to seeing how he does at Mantova.

He does impressive things, not many riders can come into mxgp and battle for top 10 places within 3 races.

Great performance. I don’t get why more young riders aren’t trying to move over to the GP’s, it would be such a great life experience to be able to travel the world. The memories and people they’d get to meet outside of their own bubble at home would be priceless.

I don’t imagine anyone is making any considerable amount of money racing in Canada short of championship bonuses.

Going to be good to watch how much he can improve in the next few rounds.
Top 10 in that company as an outsider is impressive.
