Ways to make bike pull longer in each gear

Edited Date/Time 10/6/2021 12:52pm
Looking for some input. I have a rmz250 and looking to make the bike pull longer in each gear. I have full Yoshimura exhaust and Hinson clutch. I have tried a screenless intake and that didn't seem to actual to anything at all so I am back to running the stock cage. Is mapping the best way to get the bike to pull for longer? High compression? Cams? All 3? Any input is helpful. TIA

Gearing if it’ll pull it. Drop a couple on the rear or add one on the front

Yes the "if it will pull it" is my concern. Bottom to mid on these bikes is actually nice but they fall so flat up top. When riding it's not like I am at the top of the gear if that makes sense? It's more that it just stops pulling as hard as it does from bottom to mid.

It will certainly mellow it out, but a front sprocket is cheap. Pick one up for 20 bucks or whatever it is and give er a go. 1 in the front is give or take 3 in the rear, so you can always fine tune from there. I know with my last 250f I did that I’m conjunction with some ECU work, pipe, Backfire screen free intake, and some light porting I did myself (basically just removed the casting marks and cleaning up any rough spots) and I was happy with it…till I got too fat for it Grinning

Ha yup just looked on RockyMountain and a 14T front is on closeout from Primary Drive for $4.79. Sounds like a cheap enough way to try to me! Thanks.

I have a RMZ 450, my biggest complaint was the lack of top end power. I put a full FMF system on it and it helped smooth the power, but I wouldn’t say it pull any further. Best thing I did was gear it down a tooth and use 4th gear more. Bike works so much better in bumps being in a taller gear. Maybe try gearing down and use 3rd in most turns.

I feel like a 250F doesn’t have enough torque to gear up, you might end up with a bike that doesn’t pull hard when the dirt is deep.

How much longer do you need it to pull? Math is your friend here with ratios.

Big bore kit with the above mentioned gear change will deliver more torque and allow the taller gearing to be for longer in each gear .

Gearing isn’t going to help a flat top end in my opinion. I would suggest a vortex ignition before spending any money on the engine. Completely changes the engine character and it made my Honda 450 rev to the moon when needed. But like mentioned above adding a tooth or two to the rear and riding the track in 3rd and 4th would be better for a 250f if that’s your preferred route.

Im really not opposed to any particular route I just dont want to spend money on something that makes no difference. I know the RMZ is know for signing off on top and I'd like to fix that. I didn't really consider big bore because so much of what I read said that big bore really helped the bottom and mid and not so much up top and currently I am actually very happy with the bottom and mid that the bike has stock.

Probably need a cam or head work and ecu tuned to match to get it to really pull on top. There is a guy out of Texas on youtube that has some impressive gains on the RMZ. I'm not sure what it costs, but he has it pulling dyno numbers similar to a worked over YZ250F.

Camshaft will help. Find one that improves mid and top end. Web Camshafts, Hot Cams etc

Will I need to get a remap if I throw in cams?

Probably will need a remap although it may be possible to do it with the Get wifi tuner. You will be better off with a Vortex.

Here is the issue with the yellow bike. It can be made very fast but it is not cheap to do it. If you want an extra 4hp at the top end you may be money ahead to sell the RMZ and buy a KTM or KX250. I have seen 2021 KX250s pretty reasonable used.

On the other hand a tuned up 44hp RMZ250 with head, cams, piston, and ECU would be pretty sweet if you can ride well enough to take advantage of the extra power.

Here is the place that does the youtube video with the dyno testing. http://www.hpracedevelopment.com/

I wouldn't say I need 44 horsepower but I wouldn't mind being able to knock on the door or crack the 40 horsepower mark. Horsepower numbers for these bikes seem to be all across the board but based on what I have seen from factory claims mixed with actual dyno tests I have seen, I am assuming the rmz250 to be around 37ish horsepower.

Imo, I think dropping a tooth in the rear, piston and ecu tune would be just the ticket for you.

Get a vortex and get it mapped from xpr it will pull longer for sure .

I'm trying to decide on gearing with my RMZ as well. The bottom/mid is so strong that I don't really want to weaken that though. I ended up doing cams/porting/GET ecu all tuned for T4 fuel and the bike is really strong. All of this work allowed it to rev out further but the bottom/mid is still super strong.

Where did you end up getting cams from?

I got a package from Dean Baker (Baker speed) and it's basically a JGR replica. He had Web Cams do the custom grinds.

I bought some Suzuki OEM parts for a great deal from the owner of Armored Graphix in NC. He bought a lot of the leftover JGR parts. He definitely has some stuff for your bike, you might want to try him.
