For me preference is the biggest issue. I prefer the smaller 04' that I can whip around and man handle a little better. It just gives me a better touch and more overall feel of control.
Motor wise, the 04' isn't no slouch by no means. It can feel tame if the timing is retarded in the middle of the adjustable range. I run mine advanced to the max adjustable range and it makes it pipey. Honestly, I've rode the 05' - 07' RM's and YZ's that everyone always talks about and I think they are tamer than the 04' KX. To each their own. I'm not dissing, just my opinion.
If the 04' fits you size wise it is an excellent bike. It is a smaller bike (like they used to be) and I think that is something that has been missing in recent years.
I had one too. When I got it I could only touch with one foot on tippie toes, and by the end of the year I had to move up to 125s b/c I had outgrown it. We had every problem under the sun with mine though. Stator went out, floats stuck, warped the head (my fault). Well maybe it was all my fault. My dad made me do all my own work on it.
It doesn't say it's Tevin's, but he lives in Palestine,TX
and he took 3rd at the GH race.

Pit Row
Buying a gently used 2 strokes for a good price and then selling it for the same price or more is a hell of a lot easier on the pocketbook than buying a new expensive 4 stroke and then eating a whole lot of depreciation when you unload it a year later. This is especially true when the person involved can have just as much fun on the sweet 2 stroke!
