yz250fx can it be detuned with mapping?

I've got a 5'10 155# 14yr old novice, he's only ridden a few times a year since he was little. Lately he wants to ride every weekend.He says he is bored with the crf230f I've been renting for him, but he is also too intimidated at his current skill level to safely ride my 2020 yz125. I had planned on a yz125x for him but he likes 4t's better so far. So I'm curious how mellow the map 2 is on a yz250fx, or if I could make a map w the power tuner that could help ease the transition? (There is a demo day coming that I plan to attend in a few months but thought I'd ask)

I would leave the mapping alone and add a flywheel weight from Stealthy Offroad to the bike to decrease the hit. You can also drop a tooth on the rear sprocket to reduce the hit. Not to sound like a dick, but if your kid is bored with the 230 but is too scared to ride a 125 or 250f, then he's not ready to move up. Have him get more seat time in on the 230 and when he starts complaining the bike is too slow or you notice he's overriding the bike, then move him up.

I think the newer (2020+) models are tunable.

I’m a pretty big advocate of a 125 at that age. that’s what I did, and I was a little smaller than your son. I feel like a 2 stroke 125 taught me a lot of handling and momentum type stuff.

Agree, I'd prefer he try a 125x, its about 45 lbs lighter too. I think my 20 yz125 kind of startled him (even though we were on a nice big dirt circle track for testing purposes) and he is wanting a 4t as he doesnt think he "can even ride a 2 stroke"

IMO if hes afraid of the 125, a 230 is the right bike for him. A detuned 250 is going to be more than a 125. Plus a 125 you can lug with literally no power

There’s some good map threads over on Thumpertalk. I recall one guy running a map that was basically like an xr250 so his wife could ride it.

Have you tried putting a flywheel weight on the 125? It’ll smooth it out.

The Yamahas are very tunable, I prefer to get the fueling set and leave it alone. The timing is what I use to get the feeling of a tractor or race bike.

The 125 is the right bike. If they are afraid of it then a 250f is too much.
The 125 will bog and gag if they baby it. A 250 f will torque up and go.
The 125 is lighter than the 230 as well.

My son was the same age but shorter and lighter.
He never really took to the YZ125.
125's are not easy to ride for a beginner or coming off a 230. Totally different engine characteristics.
He started riding my 250FX when he was 15, guessing about 5' 8", 130 lbs. and it was an unbelievable difference.
No tuning necessary. This is a great bike!
The power is mellow enough for a beginner
We ride off-road, trails, desert, technical.

Wayyy different story between a super hard to ride tiddler and a 250f.... 250f feels like a play bike until the higher rpms.... the tiddler dies with low rom, and is full rip every place else.... imo- you probably don't need to do anything to a 250f

I sold my 2015 YZ250FX to a 14 year old that had taken my MSF course. He was riding a DRZ125. I met him and his dad at a local riding area, softened the map as much as possible with a GYTR tuner and watched him ride the bike for 15 minutes. He did just fine and has been enjoying the bike and increasing his skill for a year now.

If your 125 is too intimidating for him he is in for a world of hurt on a 250F Yamaha.
