So I'll take that as a no? But watching you get all butt hurt was entertaining.
Huh?

So you ignored my post giving Brian Moreau as an example, got it.

Clearly the Navy doesn’t test for common sense when they sign y’all up.

You list an anecdotal example where you say "they THINK it was the cause" as a suitable substitute for an actual study and then accuse me for lack of common sense? Ok buddy.

I guess you did ask for a “study or data”, my bad.

Doesn’t change my stance that you should be able to clearly understand they are more dangerous. It’s fucking obvious.

You think KTM banned helmet cams on their riders just for fun?

Be real, you really don’t understand how a helmet cam strapped to the top of your helmet would make it more dangerous? Seriously? 🤣

Liquid Image made them but are now out of business. You can pick old ones up cheap. I thought they were decent for when they were around, but obviously are not even close to being in the same league as todays go pros. I have a pair. I loved them just for the convenience. No mounting, no aiming, can easily swap between riders, perfect vantage point.

I bought a pair of OHO goggle cam on amazon this year for snow skiing. They are better quality then the Liquid image are, but still not in the same league as other modern POVs. I don't make content or anything, just like to go back and review the day, so the video quality is plenty for me. Some other company, ZEAL, I think made goggle cams for snow skiing but also stopped.

I'm a fan of the idea for sure. Maybe it wasn't viable previously with the companies stopping, but now with better technology and the competition hampered by safety rules, it could be a thing.

I wouldn't worry too much about a 'study' for it. I am pretty sure that there are no true 'studies' that made the AMA mandate full face helmets, 8" minimum height boots, long sleeve jerseys, or full length pants either...........

I think that we both may have missed this sort of thing. While the authors are very careful to point out the ‘statistical significance’ not being completely met, it’s very clearly due to sample size, as the raw percentages would indicate a large increase in inter cranial injury with the presence of a device outside the helmet. There’s also the easy reasoning that the helmets meeting certifications for use are tested without the additional accessories so are no longer ‘certified’ after modification.

I can understand that the gopro mount could effect the rotation of a helmet in a crash. So... if the gopro helmet mount that the camera attach's to is so dangerous , WHY does the AMA not ask you to remove it?

At the last AMA hard enduro I did , I had my go pro on the top of my helmet. Someone came down the line and asked me and a few others to remove their Camera's. I had my chest mount already on figuring this would happen( which by the way only works if your sitting down)

So here was someone enforcing the no helmet cam rule but apparently the dangerous part , the mount, is still ok to run?

DC, You seriously want me to believe this is a safety issue?

I'm not the only one to experience this at an AMA event. Remove the camera and you can race, but the helmet mount is ok to run...

Really?

The rule comes from the national AMA organization.

But each AMA promoter operates on their own, and most are volunteers. Technically, they should ask everybody to remove the mount. But, unfortunately, not every volunteer at the event knows every rule.

If it's not a safety issue then what is it?

You really think there is some grand conspiracy that they all benefit from by not letting you get your footage? Is the AMA really concerned they are going to "lose out" by letting you put out content looking like a complete squid at a hard enduro? News flash bro, unless your a top 10 in the world Extreme rider then nobody wants to watch your boring helmet cam anyway.....

What would they gain? Seriously. None of you can answer that, what do they gain by stopping amateur squids from wearing helmet cams? Do you think that maybe, just maybe they are doing it to keep you safer? Hell, maybe whoever the AMA gets insurance from told them they had to make the rule?

Trust me bud, it's not some conspiracy. Odds are the dude on the starting line might not even agree with the rule like you and was doing just enough to cover his ass, I would bet $100 it wasn't some high powered guy from the AMA who's in on your non-existent conspiracy.

How about next time you just do the right thing and don't wear the stupid thing to the starting line to begin with since you damn well knew you weren't supposed to. Do you purposely run cheater shit on your bike too?

You're assuming they understood the rule and enforcement correctly.

Apparently, they did not.

If I can strap a camera to my chest, my back, my ass, on the bike in 10 places, how is this a money grab against people taping?

You knew the rule, hence why you were ready with your chest mount.......

The rest of his points are a pretty reasonable extrapolations of your obviously not wanting to follow the rule voluntarily in the first place, combined with your questioning of whether the rule is in place for safety.

I guess a fair question to you would be since you were racing a National Championship event and knew the rule was there, why did you have a GoPro on your helmet to begin with?

I’ve raced events in every AMA Sanctioned “National” Off Road Series in existence except the newly formed Extreme Series, I’ve got a pretty good idea how it works.

The events don’t operate on nearly the level of SX/MX Nationals. Let’s not pretend it’s the same please, the dude who told you to take off the helmet cam was almost certainly a volunteer.

I put it on my helmet to see if they wanted to remove everything. I had no intention to race with it there, hence the chest mount. Obviously this was before this thread came out. I figured if it was really for safety reasons anyone, regardless of their status, would have instruction's to remove everything.

20 years ago the ama banned dogs from all their events. They said it was due to people getting bit. It was actually due to them getting marching orders from their insurance CO, who got tired to paying off dog bite claims. The AMA issues insurance for all their amateur events, it's one of the main reason's so many small promoters are AMA sanctioned.

Now, I have no idea if the incident involving Brian Moreau triggered the INS Co to take a hard look at their liability.
My GUESS is the INS Co told the AMA ban the helmet cam or lose your INS. Same tactic they used with the banning of dog's, which by the way is no longer in effect.

The AMA and their INS have effectively limited their liability by banning the helmet cam, doesn't really matter if it's enforced properly, they are just covering their legal ass's.

Maybe that official wasn't serious about safety, or didn't want you to miss your race.

It is about safety, period. I don't know how anyone can see or say otherwise, because there's nothing else to gain except for the concern of safety and the compromising of a helmet.

But believe what you want to believe, I guess that's how people roll now...

And the dog rule changed as tort reform changed and people couldn't sue as easily when a dog bit them. (Believe me, I know, Loretta Lynn herself got sued once by a camper who said the neighbor's dog bit them.) And I really don't think any enduro or hard enduro or even GNCC is part of AMA Pro Racing; they are all AMA-sanctioned and, as pointed put above, mostly run by volunteers.

The insurance companies have not had a say in this, at least not that I know of. But the busted helmets we've seen and the concerns of many in the paddock have.

I would again suggest just mounting the camera somewhere else, but that wouldn't help your argument that this is somehow not about about safety...

Spending extra money on anti rotation technology in your helmet like MIPs doesn’t make much sense if a dirty big snag is then attached to the helmet to maximise the opportunity to make the rotation worse. Not to mention the chance to also load up the neck more. There is a reason helmets start with nice smooth shells and visors are designed to break away really easily.
Meanwhile a chest mount camera is nearly as good.

Chest mount probably isn’t the safest place either. That’s just going to leverage chest trauma. Hard blocky camera being sandwiched between the ground and the body. Or the body and the crossbar pad.

Look, you already said that you had the chest mount on because you thought that they’d ask you to take it off your helmet.

Then you try to fabricate a completely different reason for having your chest mount on by saying that you had planned on using it the whole time, but just had your camera on your helmet to basically be a dick to the officials.

You understand that the dog scenario you gave doesn’t exactly help your point, don’t you?

You infer that the AMA wasn’t being truthful about banning dogs because people were being bit, then say that the ‘real reason’ was because their insurance company was tired of paying out claims.....for dog bites.

Not sure why you don’t understand the relationship between those 2 things, but it should be very obvious that they go hand in hand.

Perhaps the AMA needs to clarify to the promoters that nothing should be on the helmet. Most of the time at sign up they have helmet checks for timing strips anyway. That would be a good time to check...

Agreed, but I also think it's a good idea to simply follow the rules and take it off yourself before the race rather than make someone tell you to do what you apparently already knew to do.

So what happens when people running cameras on their chest break their sternum and/or xiphoid process, which can also kill you?

Same thing that happens when you die in a car wreck despite wearing a seatbelt--you did your best to protect yourself, but sometimes it's still not enough. And while I don't know of anyone who has died of a camera concussing their chest, I have seen enough mangled helmets and neck and back injuries to convince me that anywhere else is better than on top of your helmet, because there's a difference between cracking your sternum and severing your spinal cord...
