Its funny how much elitism Im seeing in the Moto world these days. Back in the early-mid 70s if you had a bike to ride, thats all you needed to be in the club. Every kind of bike you can think of was out at the places I rode. Most of us didnt have gear at all, usually just a helmet. Some guys on street bikes, enduros, you name it. Hell I rode with one guys who were on XL100s, CB100s with the lights/speedo taken off. We all loved motorcycles and thats all that mattered. As for racing? Who cared!? We'd ride every drainage ditch, ravine, open lot, construction site with dirt piles, anywhere, and had the greatest time ever doing it.

Its a shame that its not like that now.
Amen Racer. Real good post IMO.

Interesting respinces. Btw my wife just had spinal fusion so I havnt slept in awhile sorry for the misspellings I'm all for racing. I just think anyone who throws a leg over a bike and hits it hard deserves equal respect. Jody's job is to give his opinion the title of my post is my opinion back. I don't personaly know Jody but I'm pretty sure he can handle it Smile

I started losing respect for many of the MXA guys 10 years ago with their constant bashing of any factory rider not named McGrath or Carmichael. Constantly talking about how guys like Windham and Reynard were a waste of talent.

2 yrs ago I raced for the first time in 4 yrs and soon remembered why I hadn't raced in 4 yrs.

If a guy started a track that only ran about 12 classes and had long motos with great prep it may not make the money of one running 32 classes, but it would grow to have a cult following with 30-40 riders per class.

Thats how Troy Ohio was for local races in the 80's and 90's.

"Hey, that guy wrote down his opinion. Fuck him".

And yet, here you all are - posting YOUR opinions. Nice.
I didn't know what comment was being discussed until someone pasted it here.

I read it before and thought then and do now, "WGAS?"

If Jody doesn't respect me because I haven't raced in 5 or 6 years, I couldn't care less. He's entitled to his opinion.

I largely agree with Jody. It's funny to watch practice riders wind themselves up in a knot over such trivial comments. A little shame perhaps?

There are lots of reasons why people scale back their racing or stop altogether. But I don't buy the the excuse of "wanting more time to ride." 95% of the people at a practice track just sit around for hours on end until they are ready to put in their next 3 laps or so.

I believe its more due to the fact that people get frustrated with their riding or their finishes, but keep practicing to get their fix. People get upset with themselves for not living up to their own expectations, they can't stand getting a 14th or when they think in their head they are good enough to win.

It's that "gotta be 1st" mentality that has caused the majority of the problems in amateur and local racing too. Nowadays there has to be 35 different classes for every age, speed, bike size, etc...there are just too many classes on a raceday.

Adam , maybe your right. At 47 years old I can't do it anymore. I've become a pussy. I cant work 14 hour days, come home to take care of my wife. Take care of the house. Check work E-mails. Work on the lawn, the house, the cars. Than get my bike ready somewhere in there. Spend time with the kids Wake up at 4:00 on Sunday driver 3 hours sign up for 3 classes ride my 3 laps of practice, than wait 3-4 hours for my first moto. Ride my butt of than go striagit to the line because 2 of my 3 classes are one right after another. I barely make it through that moto and than I can wait another 3 hours for my third moto. The day ends about 6:00 PM and I can pack up and drive thee 3 hours back home. Unload than take care of the things that need to get taken care of at home so I can wake up at 5:00 for my 14 hour work day.
WWAAAAAA I know cry me a river. I'm a pussy but I think most of us are in this boat. Like I said. Anyone who throws a leg over a bike and rides laps is tough in my book. At least compared to the guys walking around a golf course complaining about the heat and having to walk so much.

Like the guy said earlier Jody surely hit a big raw nerve with you guy's!

Exclusively riding round in practice is NOT being part of the sport. It's load of FUN yes but racing IS the sport. Everything else is playing at it.

The saying goes when the flag drops the bullshit stops. If you never race, you never have to quit bullshittin!

That's not being elitist it's just the plain truth...............

I got tired of trying to ride & race with 40+ year old guys that still rode like they were trying to land a factory ride. I switched to vintage and evolution racing three years ago and it has been a blast. We are out there to have fun and nobody takes it too serious, and walking through the pits is like being in moto time machine.

Its not so much that Jody struck a nerve with people, maybe he did, but, as an editor of a magazine that promotes riding dirt bikes, is that really a smart road to take? Is it a good idea to alienate 2/3 of your readers cause they don't race every weekend, especially when the economy is so fucked up, people who normally ride and/or race can hardly afford it anymore, let alone buy MXA.

LOL, maybe Jody is just bitter cause he realizes his days are numbered... just sayin.

yzvet426... You had me until the crack on golfers.. WTF did the golfers do too you..? LOL

Let me run you out too palm springs tpc stadium course in july at 116 for 5hrs. you'll think your in hell and love it. well at least me and my buddy do... only a ex-motox'r would be so sadistic i guess..

I'm really surprised that no one has really mentioned the cost factor to race/ride these days. every time i think about getting back into it. the 12 grand or so just too get started makes me think ummmm fuck it. especially since i rode in the 70's, 80's, early 90's and from what ive seen i'm pretty sure i would be very disapointed.

The atmosphere that made local racing great is gone. thats what made the sport, not just the racing. Hell lets face it, the racing for each person was almost a sidebar for the day. I mean dont get me wrong, getting to race is one of the highlites of my life, but so was watching magoo, shultz, myers, tuner and the rest of the guys every weekend, even the intermediate class's. I mean shit, walking the whole track early in the morning was the bomb. the families, the friends, the turnouts, the tracks, style of bikes and the things you did to trick it out, doing zharts without a bike, telling a guy to cross up, throwing water on guys and hoping not too douche they're goggles... and having the time and money to do it. I still consider myself a racer at heart and always will. and fuck any chode that doesnt respect that.

I agree with some of what Jody says about racing. I would hit the track two times a week to practice but the real thrill was on race day, there is nothing you can do that gives you the same feeling as you sit on the gate for your moto and the last few seconds before the gate drops. The first corner and first couple laps and the greatest most intense feelings and I still remember how it felt back in 1976 and it never changed up untill I quit racing a few years ago. I went out to ride at the tracks for a few months after that but with not racing it just wasnt the same.

I have no problems with guys who just do track time but dont race or never have raced, but in my case it was all about the thrill of race day. A few of the guys on here must have thought Jody was talking about them personaly with their name calling,I think Jody is a tool but s few on this board are just as bad.
6/23/2009 10:50am
So Jody never practiced at all before he rode his first race? I guess he was a Professional Practice Surfer as well when he was sitting out there on his board waiting to catch a little rip current . Senility has finally caught up to JW.

going to the races and lining up on the gate was a thrill. The adrenalin pump that starts the night before even. Definitely nothing like it.

But screw anyone that doesn't like how I live and ride today. I do it for pleasure. If someone is paying me to do it, I'd have to follow their rules, but I'm certain nobody wants to pay me to ride.

If the magic of racing is going, it's because less people are doing it.

I understand what you are saying about thin starting lins-up but that's just race tracks massaging peoples ego's giving them more chances to win by having a gazillion classes. It's sure as hell not like that here in England! ( usually one group of adults with 3 x 25 moto's). When we raced a meeting in Arizona last year I was blown away by the number of classes ( and the amount of sandbagging that went on in a pathetic attempt to win). Seemed to make a mockery of racing when there were only 5 or 6 on the 'line'.
That said the people were the same great friendly folks that populate MX everywhere.

As for the guys 40+ - relax! I'm sure there was nothing aimed at you. There's absolutely no disgrace in giving best to Father Time when it comes to racing!

I started racing in 1981 and continue to do so, but with my career taking me all over the world, it has been hard to join any type of sanctioned racing series. I just don't have the time.

I usually join a local club to support the local scene, and will do some club races every year. But for the most part I get together with a group of guys and ride at different tracks during the week. Sometimes the competition on these practice days with my buddies, is as good or better as any race...

I have no problem with practice only people, and Jodie's comments about "having more respect for the slowest racer than the fastest guy at practice" makes no sense....
That fast practice guy has dedicated just as much time and energy to get to that level as most racers...maybe he just might have responsibilities outside of racing that prevent him from lining up on a gate.

Because I have a good career and cant make a lot of races, does this mean I'm not a racer because I get more seat time on practice days?

From what I understand of Jody, he's lucky more people don't race, because nearly every one of them would place in front of him.

Ive always heard that the MXA guys were slow, including Jody, but i just dont see how that is possible. He was a pro, and if I remember correctly finished as high as 3rd one season. I understand that he isnt young, but riding multiple times a week, I just wouldnt think it it possible to be slow.
Anyone on here actually seen him race/ride, what class would he race in and all that?
