Millsaps is pretty lucky he has another year I wonder where a guy like stroupe will end up? potential but no results isn't so good in an economic depression
I was thinking the same, I thought he was up after this year. Now this isn't a personal bash at DM but he still has another year to collect a check and ride around mid-pack? The guy is far from riding to his potential and Stewart didn't take him out or injure him in any way so Im bummed at his tenure riding for Honda he didn't live up to what he can do and he is far better than his results show too bad because he could've nabbed more than a few titles by now. I doubt he will find a good ride when contract time is up and I'd be suprised if he even continued racing after his Honda contract is up....he just doesn't seem to be that driven.

With ath said I couldn't be happier about factories bowing out of racing it's gonna separate the men from the boys i.e. riders that have the drive to win and want to be the best.... not get the best contract. Somewhere somehow some of these stars seem to have lost their way as to why they began racing in the first place....

Dungey will get a good ride no matter where he goes, as for Stroupe and Izzi it will be gut check time. They will have to really claw their way back if they want to get paid.

I cannot begin to tell everyone what the cost of Pro MX is. Trentman Racing is only doing High Point, REDBUD and Possibly Steel City and it is costing us a mint. If you look at all we have to do it has cost the team at least $6,000 dollars (this does not include bikes, Parts, Gear, ect.). According to the AMA all motocross teams need to be neat in the Pits (This means a collared shirt). So I got the whole team pit shirts (That was $500). Then $200 per race per rider ($200X3=$600 the $600X3 riders=$1800 for entry fees). Then the AMA PRO License. Now that is already over $3,000. Then $40 for each pit pass (6X$40=$240 for a normal race so 240X3=$720 and this is if we don't have any extra passes) Then there is gas, food, ect. for the weekend. Then what ever is left we pay to the riders. So if you are a privateer team and you are only doing that many races (3) can you believe doing all 12 races and having a Semi going around the country and pay a rider, bikes, parts (Multiple of each part), mechanics, staff, ect. It adds up. I give props to teams who do the whole series! All I have to say is it would not surprise me if some teams back down on how may riders they have or fold. I see a lot of privateer team coming in and picking up riders that don't have rides like the Butler Brother, Heart and Hunnington team, ect. It is sad to see but it will be nice to see a privateer team get a win. Well that is my 2 cents worth.

And what about Pourcel ???

The french rider is the real deal. I think Red Bull Honda will probably sign him for 2010.

I could see pourcel going to honda and Dungey replacing Mike Alessi or Byner at Suzuki 450. Guys like Pourcel reed Dungey and maybe shortare the only ones guarenteed top riders next year imo

I have a question.... What do you get for your $3000 pro Lic ? And after paying this why do you still have to pay them $200+ each race for entry fee??? Where does this money go?

People ask why the gate is not always full, well this explains it !!! I am better off to pay my $60 and race 2 classes at the local track and probably leave at the end of the day with $2-300 in race winnings.

What other pro sports require the athletes to pay to put on the show.....

The AMA Pro License is $275 (Multiply that by 3). I never said it was $3,000. I got the extra about $2000 in our gas to get the race, food, Staff Pay, and anything else we need. I was was just putting about how much it cost. But it is horrible what a pro team has to pay to race.

He misread it just like I did. I thought you said 3000 too. But you were saying the total is already 3000.

I started laughing when i first thought it said that a license was $3000. But then i re-read it.

Its expensive doing them in a van(done 2, got 2 more to go). Even if one of them is your home track!

It is still by far and away the cheapest professional motorsport with huge attendance and a great television package. Everything else (NASCAR, IRL, NHRA, etc) is much more expensive.

I don't run a team, but aren't the costs pretty reasonable for a professional motor sport that gets shown live on NBC (at least this year)? Most motor sports take cubic dollars: (drag racing? F1? NASCAR?).
The fact that you can buy a bike in a dealership, haul it in a van to the track and compete with world class athletes says a lot. That is what makes MX unique. It takes lots of dollars, but not compared to other motorsports.
And I do sympathize with riders and teams that are strapped for cash. The answer is just sponsors, sponsors, and more sponsors. And that is tough right now.

Chad, Pourcel & Dungey are easily the hottest property on the market this year.
They will hold up alot of other deals in my opinion.
Would love to see at least one of the on a honda.

I hate to be all doom and gloom, but we are about to witness the end of the era of factory teams.. This is going to get ugly. Seriously.

Everyone is strapped for cash. Teams are folding. Plus, there are only a couple of guys capable of winning. No team is going to pay big bucks for a top guy, when the best that "top" guy can do is 5th or 6th.

The glory days are over and now we move into the era of the private teams, which in my opinion, is the best thing that can happen.
I agree.

Most modern contracts make me laugh.
I have several views of course..........
The teams side......
riders side.................
fan side!
"Incentive contracts" are the only way to fly!
Most are very very over rated & overpaid, no disrespect, but it's
just business.
Sure the sports dangerous & all that, but again "deliver the goods ",
& get rewarded. Most modern deals are based on fear.
The companies don't want to lose, "name game" wise, but many
"namers" just don't get with the program until it's to late if at all.
Pick your color, any color, there's guys there just not living up to it all.
Sure they go thru the motions, train, practice, diet, yet given the tanks are full
salary wise, they're to careful & to push it, hence the "incentive contract".
A base amount based on it all & the resume he brings, no more no less.
Then you have a "power program" of gains & losses, yes I said losses.
You see, most if not all upper crust programs deliver. Always!
Most riders do not. Again, the losses. It's not just about control, it's about progress!
Some don't need this kind of contract, yet most do.
Bring it, get it........Bring it often, get more & so on.
Cause issues, etc, & you loose.
Again, it's a profession & a business, agents aside, it needs to be treated as such.
No more no less.
Someone mentioned earlier that this guys here & that guys there for more than expected.
That only works for the rider in most cases.
All deals should be performance based.
Multi-year deals can be had, but make them subject to performance.
If the rider delivers, etc., then it flies. If not, then " plan B" of the deal takes effect, but only if the team wants it to.
You gotta have more than the name on your back.
If it all works though, everyone's happier , & the riders even earn more.
Why have a name out of fear of loosing him, especially when the results are hardly there.
Teams need to be smarter.
Riders need to be hungrier.
Everyone wins!

Are most current contracts heavily incentive based or salary based w/ bonuses? Do you think the new contracts will be less guaranteed money and more incentive based.

I think if teams are smart for their money they'll
be "performance/incentive" based.
Most now have performance clauses, yet the salaries
that go hand-n-hand are to steep.
Again, no disrespect to ALL riders, but I personally ALWAYS
gave everything of myself to each rider & every program & situation
I've ever been involved in.
I think most can't say that & have it be real.
That's the problem.
Between the teams & the agents the salaries have gotten way out of hand.
That's fact.
Example:
"RV" has delivered big time for his years.
Hence big payday!
Others of name, big names, no way.
We're all waiting for their breakout ride, race, season!
Many slide in there with no fanfare.
That's what you don't want.
Sure it's not bad, but hardly marketable.
& once in a blue moon rides are what they are.
Again, most teams always perform to their max.
Most riders don't.
Nowadays especially in this down turn, gotta put your money
where your mouth is..................

Alot of riders contracts seem to be up in 09, I have a feeling some good guys might end up with nothing if the teams are cutting back... does anyone have a list of the guiys who have contracts up at the end of the year?
IMO Suzuki will keep Dungey and drop Mike. IT is shit out of luck IMO. He did nothing in 2 yrs with Suzuki and almost nothing in 2 yrs with Honda. Milsaps will be on the same boat as IT next yr. They have showed there potential. There are better riders in the lites right now that are going to move guys like Milsaps, Hill and IT straight out of the factory rigs.

Again, no disrespect, but look at Milsaps.
Tons of potential, yet results?
Injuries aside, guys in his neighborhood pull in
huge dollars, huge. If I was upper mgmt. I'd be
saying, "WTF" many times over.
Again, pick your color..................
Injuries, results, whatever, the clocks still ticking.
No time for, "I'm trying to find myself", or "I'm changing my program",
give me a break!
Childish reasoning yet professional plus salaries!
Look at "Pourcel"!
In French or English, that's heart & your monies worth.
I think the days of locking these guys up for yrs. for big money,
& minimal return are through. Champions win or die trying.
If results fade or if your big bike days aren't your "Lites" winnings,
tough break, but salaries need to adjust more often.
It'll be leaner for the agents of such as well.
In the future, your only as good as your last race.
"Podiums" that's what it's about.
Gotta be there, not back there!
Want big doe?
Then find yourself soon.
The crews & teams that remain are waiting!

Even though it was probably too late for my Josh Hill thread, he is when healed and in shape a darn good SX racer. Not even 20 and at 18 has that breakthru SX season '08 with a win/5th OA series.

But proves you have to back up your results. Not miss any mains. One podium and one heat race win doesn't cut it.

Too bad for Josh, as I'm sure he counted on Langston for actual riding help on track; not for poor Grant and all he's been thru; Hepler too. Maybe Hills had too much pressure to perform in MX lacking a full time teammate; carrying the Yamaha Mtr Corp banner loneranger style. With his youth, he may get another chance? Some have gotten more chances than X-lax.

Had a good 4 days. Heard much rumor about who's going where, changes in team names, the performance/incentive ladened contracts with a much smaller than normal yearly base salary than in previous years as Ozzy mentions.

Making everyone but the proven ones work for their dollars(James, RV, Chad) and the very few still having another year on contracts.

Even possibilites of not only SX, but MX only contracts.

Dunno 'bout that one though.

Stroupe will be very good on a 450 IMO. I hope he moves up to the big bike soon.

but the oportunity for a return is way better for more entrants in those other entities isnt it?
