Nothing super trick but a couple solid improvements. And some pictures of him at his first race a few weeks ago.

Barona Oaks CMMC 1989

YZ60 forks, YZ60 cylinder head, cylinder porting by the late Jerry Leckich of Leckich Engineering, flat slide Keihin carb, early Pax Racing ignition, expansion chamber pipe, extended swing arm and Works Performance mono-shock mods by Dave Huffman of Cycle Engineeering.

It was scary fast!!

How sick was Nick Wey's gear setup in 1989? Or as the youngsters would call it, a lit "kit"...

Can anyone post a build list? One that makes the PW appear stock or legal...

We bought my son a PW50 last week and he got smoked a the races. The others dads have it figured out. I though they were all stock....

Skip the restrictor plate, 65 main jet and throttle adjustment. We did those already...

Seeing that he's only been on it a week, you're sure that it's the performance of the bike that is holding him back?

Perhaps he needs some time to adjust to the bike to get up to speed.

The old "Still have to twist the throttle comes into play". My kid has had many times where he was faster than mini's and p3's on his PW indoors. When I moved him up to a mini, his lap times actually dropped the first day and now at 5hrs, he is about 10sec a lap faster on the mini with more to gain ahead.

The biggest mod you see with the "legal" bikes are the QT50 gear set.

I bought my kids 50 from a Mini dad just doing what everyone else was doing
60cc kit, HD clutch springs, Faked the oil injection, Lower transmission gear, footpegs, real tires, U4.4 premixed. The thing I would have done if I kept him on it was a quick turn throttle. The distance they have to twist the stock throttle is pretty large when you are dealing with a little kid.

Not to mention the riding style he was obviously born with haha
Meanwhile I was dead sailoring with gum boots home made boot savers and jeans haha

I've looked around for the answer with no luck so far.

Can the 2017 forks be added to a 2016 or older? I think they're about 5mm bigger but is that in the lower or upper? Are the axles the same? Triple clamps?

I built this TLD replica for my son a few years ago. Bought it in pieces off Facebook market place from a guy.

Where do you get parts for these now? I’ve been looking for plastics! I don’t want cheap Amazon but also not looking to pay overpriced OEM. TIA

I’m pretty sure that’s your only choices. Cheap garbage or oem. I got some of the cheap stuff and it..sucks. Wish acerbis or one of the quality plastics brands would make some.

RmATV for OEM plastics and parts. Do not buy China

Pax racing and pro flow great aftermarket places

New style forks require almost everything. They still suck. If you are that serious about a race machine, start fresh with pro built new bike. Otherwise, use the PW’s to teach your kid how to ride and love bikes, then if you need to race, go cobra or KTM as they are 10x the bike at a minimum

Good times, miss that bike, that little kid, and those days. He's 15 now (5 in the pic) and on a 150sx. I can't keep up with him anymore...

Did you buy the plastics or did they come with the bike? I’m building my son a illegal pw50 and was trying to find plastics that aren’t oem but also don’t look terrible. We have a 2020 that is AMA legal but for those few races that aren’t AMA sanctioned will have something for them

I bought them from pwonly.com. I would never make a purchase from them again after the issues I had with them. A quick search on here or Facebook reviews will tell you everything you need to know about that company.

No worries I’ll never spend money there again. I’ve got my own story I can ad to the list of others. Bike looks awesome though

Did you go the ebay route on a lot of the parts? I have one that's a barn find and I'm torn on using some of the stuff I've found on there.

Bike looks amazing. Great job!

Thanks! Mostly ebay. ebay forks are junk and inconsistent. Lots of filing required on the axle lugs on some. Looks like they eye ball them when welding. As far as carbs Rocky Mountain has one for $18 that works awesome if you cross thread oem jets in it. They are a different thread pitch. Pull the gear off the oil injector and run Maxima Super M premix with ethanol free gas if you have it in your area. Lightly oil the air filter with WD-40. I found anything else is too thick for these little bikes. I also used ebay top end kits with the cylinders and heads. I used the same one for 2 years and never tore it apart. I ported it with a dremal! It made noises I've never heard before from an engine but never died and always started right up cold or hot.

nah, there into the BMX Racing scene. Tate (the oldest) has been doing really well from what Ellie has shared.
