I work at a Kawasaki dealership and own one and can confirm this recall is true

Is there a recall number or anything I can reference to the dealer?

Also replacing with an aftermarket water pump (boyesen or procircuit) specific to the 21 fix the issue?

Just talked to my dealer about the recall, gave them my vin and told me my bike is due for an inspection. So looks like there is a possible recall, awesome Silly I’m gonna pop off the water pump cover tomorrow and take a look for myself. Anyone know if the 17-20 generation water pump is the same? Looking into just buying a pro circuit kit if so...

I took mine off today. From what I was told IF you’re bike has the problem the impeller will be riding on the case half. The problem is a to short of shaft. I was able to fit up to a .50 feller gauge Under mine and removed it ( couldn’t believe the bolt is only torqued to 7nm) to look for any scoring or etc and mine looked perfect. But I did call the dealer and they are ordering the parts and etc I guess I’ll just go ahead and get it done since it’s free and might save me from any trouble down the road

As far as the pc17-20 pump goes I was told by pc it would NOT work which I thought was odd because the impeller, pump cover, seal and etc all use the same part number between the 20 and 21’s. Pc said their kit for the 21 used longer bolts and the crown on the cover was different and they wouldn’t recommend using the older one.

Doesn’t look like any issues with mine as well. Guess I’ll just run it until I can take it into the dealer.

I was at my dealer yesterday and they confirmed this too.
They have to inspect it and make the call. If it's rubbing the case they order replacement parts. New waterpump shaft, impeller, clutch cover etc. If it's ok they replace a few parts like o-rings and such. I'm taking mine in next week. This also applies to the XC model.

Crazy how each dealer is different. Mine ordered the parts for me without even looking at it I have no idea what they ordered but was told I would get a call when they came in and I could bring it for the repair. Plot twist we all get pc water pumps ! 😍

My local dealer is my brother. lol
They showed me the recall notice they got from Kawi.
Basically theres 2 diferent parts kits for this issue. One for if you have the wrong shaft (many more parts) and another if you don't. I'm hoping I have the right one in my bike. They've sold 4 KX 250's so far that need this done.

Wow didn’t figure it was that big of a problem you can check yourself pretty easy. Just take the cover off and see if you can fit anything behind the impeller

So if you can fit a feeler gauge under the impeller you’re good? Anyone’s VIN actually shown a recall when they look it up?

From my understanding that’s correct aslong as you have some behind it you’re good. The recall search on Kawasaki’s site won’t show it up you have to call the dealer with you’re vin for it but I’m almost certain EVERY 21 250 is up for it

Yes they checked my vin yesterday and it didn't show anything. But they did show me what info they have on the recall. It tells them to check every 21.

sorry for the slow response times guys. I own one as well and had the dealer I work for run my VIN and it came back with the recall. Not all bikes have it but looking like the early ones do. The problem may cause multiple parts to break and cause the bike to overheat and also damage casing.

I have also called Pro Circuit & Boysen. PC told me they are in the development of them and hoses but developing a better clutch is on their higher priority. The Boysen person I spoke with told me he had no idea abut the recall. so neither of them have anything at this time but of course in the works...

Just got an email about the recall and the dealer wants me to bring it in ASAP and told me not to ride it. I have the battery out and stored for the winter so I'll take it in next week. Thinking I might just upgrade the water pump if I can!

They don’t want you to ride it because it could be rubbing if you check to see if you have clearance you’re fine. Upgrading the pump won’t help if you have issues. The issue is the short shaft not the pump

I opened mine up today. I could slide a .7mm(biggest I had) feeler under the impeller at the top. Bottom not as easy to do. Still with the impeller pushed all the way in (there is a little back and forth play) I was able to get a thin feeler under the impeller at the bottom. Calling it good till I get something in the mail from Kawasaki or my vin shows up needing it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Pc already has the pump their bikes have it. When I asked why the 20 wouldn’t work I was told the crown on the cover is different and the bolts are longer

The bike is so new that there probably aren’t any aftermarket parts available yet. I would imagine that almost everyone on the starting line at a Supercross is running an aftermarket clutch like Hinson or Rekluse just for stronger engagement.

Just a heads up. If you break a clutch plate on a Kawasaki make sure you clean the internal oil screen or it may plug and starve the pump.

I haven’t broken any, a friend who works for a prominent team has had the issue with all of their initial bikes but have no issues since fitting 2020 plates

I tried my bike with a PC pipe for the first time yesterday, what a difference! I’m so happy with my 21

Did you leave the screen in? I noticed it did lose some off idle throttle response but I haven’t tried it without it.

That makes perfect sense. I was asking because we just got a 21' and debating on what direction to go with things. For now just running 50/50 NE93 / Sun110. When pipes become available would like to either get twisted flash or Vortex from them setup and run U4.4 as that's what I run in my Yam 250f. That bike had a Vortex ECU on it and it's all setup, but I haven't messed with it. Not too familiar with this stuff as we come from a road racing background, similar but different.
I will say that side plate probably breathes really well, but is a pia when washing. atm we're just pushing some plastic in the hole to cover the filter when washing.
how do you like it power & handling wise compared to the yamaha, you said you have both right?

Do you know if these 2021's are burning up clutches like some of the older kx250f's did?
