I’ve always subscribed to the idea that each of us has a certain number of big hits in us and then it’s over. Each of us is different and will walk away at different times but we all will face the transition at some point.
The ideal is to walk away on your own terms. A big crash usually doesn’t meet that criteria.
I’m 62 in a few days and have been moving away from moto and getting in to MTB as a primary outlet. It’s working and I enjoy it but it has its own set of crash opportunities.
I stopped competition Moto a few years ago when my wife had to fly to the coast and drive my broken ass back in a van. She has paid her dues for 42 years of moto nonsense with me and I had to consider her position as well.
Get better, keep us posted and keep the faith. Mentally you’re likely in a mood too so just focus on getting better.
Be cool.
There is light at the tunnel even when things feel hopeless. You’ll get through this and you’ll have your autonomy back.
If you need some conversation while you're in recovery pm me and I'll throw some digits at you. I drive 9+hrs a day so I've got time to kill. Take some pics of those good lookin nurses so we can all be jealous ! Had a Broom Hilda try to give me a sponge bath years ago 😨 !! I couldn't move and as she got close to THAT area I couldn't say "I got it I got it" fast enough !! 😉
10 years ago I unsuccessfully seat bounced a step-up double, f’ing my shoulder for all eternity. A year later I discovered the joy of off-road riding and racing. It’s a tight community like moto, but more relaxed. And no jumps, which seems to be the root cause of our ailments. And if you’re like me, even all f’d up and on pain killers, you’re already thinking “when I get back on the bike...”
Really hoping you can spend Christmas with your family, Sumdood.
Hope you heal up quickly, stay strong man.
Pit Row
I feel for you right now. I too have spent weeks in the hospital because of what we do and it makes you wonder if it’s worth it.
A few weeks ago I went to the track and had two incidents on a blind jump.
The water truck operator crossed the track on the backside of a blind 3rd gear jump and I missed him by inches. It would have been total carnage.
Then on the same jump an hour later I almost plowed a flagger who thought it was a good idea to walk across the track in the same spot.
I don’t think I will go back there for a while. Not worth it.
Instead I will be out hunting for fresh sand washes and making new turn tracks to get my fix.
Stay positive! Life is good even when it hurts.
Keep on gettin after it !!
There’s not much to do here obviously, The other night a movie with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy was on that start it off at a flat track race, The main bad guys in the movie were three chopper riding bikers who basically just drove around and shot everybody they didn’t like. I figure that movie and the little springer seat motorcycle you sent me (thank you) plus the pain meds put my brain on the path of the weirdest dream I’ve ever had. OK here is the dream. I got home from surgery and knew that my leg and pelvis were broken, I had a new Harley in the driveway and even though I was nonweightbearing figured it would be cool to drive around the neighborhood on my new bike. So I very carefully climbed on the bike and started riding around town enjoying the wind blowing through my hair. I needed gas so I pulled into a gas station and saw three other bikers, I said” how are you guys check out my new bike I had leg and hip surgery today but wanted to give it a little test run before my rehab started“ the outlaw bikers were not impressed with my “store bought yuppie Harley” and started giving me a hard time. So at that point I said whatever kooks I’ll smoke you homo’s and off I went with them in hot pursuit. It didn’t take me long to lose them of course, but when I was almost home they all cornered me and knocked me off the bike. Next thing I know I’m trying to hop home on one leg saying come on you guys don’t be a holes I had surgery today. I pulled up my pant leg, peeled back my skin so they could indeed see all the new hardware, they didn’t care pulled out knives and we’re going to stab me anyway. At that point a girl showed up ( wife ? nurse ? ) and told the three of them to back off that I was “OK”. Then they looked at my leg and said wow you’re a crazy old man, and we all shook hands and became friends. It was the first dream I remember since being in here, and without a doubt one of the most bizarre dreams I’ve ever had in my life. Hope you get a chuckle out of this and have a great holiday
Merry Christmas and to a healthy recovery for you. Continue staying positive. There will be bad moments but you have this!
I'm 50 and quit racing at 30. I have ridden a bunch of times since. I miss racing and think about riding all the time but the risk of getting hurt has kept me off the bike lately.
I live in pain caused by old injuries and it gets worse the older I get.
I broke my femur and lay there for a little over 4 hrs before I got picked up and taken to hospital.
My right leg had swollen up so bad that they could not operate straight away and the leg was placed in traction.
There are four of us in a room and taking a dump whilst flat on your back with a leg in traction is no easy affair.
Day 6 and i have stage fright but figure ill take a dump once they've operated and I'm sent home. Well, the nurse was concerned that I hadn't taken a crap yet, she calls the sister who then instructs the nurse to give me two suppositories to help expidite bowel movement.
These two suppositories looked like miniature bananas but still quite big. The nurse left them next to me and took off to the get the rubber gloves and cream. I was in a state of panic and was against having this young lady push theses thing up me ol valve...so i did it myself...dry...a couple of seconds and I'm done. She returns, I now ask for a bowl of water to wash my fingers, she got her gloves on and the cream is ready. She is demanding the suppositories as she thinks one of my roomates has disposed of them on my behalf.
Embarrassed, I let her know I'm done, she does not believe me and fetches the Sister and together they ram another two up me ol dot. They are pissed, I'm pissed and my three room mate are well entertained.
A day later I had to ask for the bed pan. Right arm through the monkey chain, left foot pushing the mattress down and with my left hand I managed to slide to pan under.
All set to give birth and the worst part is knowing your three roommates are right there screened only by the curtain.
It seemed like hell back then but I can laugh at it now.
Here's hoping you are having it a bit easier Sumdood.
