Other than beer, weed, and hookers, I haven't given them much thought, until today. Looking into recovery supplements since I've been increasing my ride time.
Who uses them (I'm talking beyond the three staples in life I mention above), and what ones have you found to be effective?

Lowers lactic acid buildup, helps prevent cramping and burning, lessens perceived exertion, and more.
I look at it as race gas for my body. Why run "pump" for myself when I won't run it in my bike?
It basically does what people think gatorade is supposed to do.
I also use CytoGainer from the same company but I don't view it as a "must" for ever rider like I do the Cytomax.

Beyond that, nothing really does what they say they will do. Protein powders, you don't piss them out, you get a build up of protein which turns to nitric acid which is not a good thing. Many vitamins are total overkill in every regard and some are even poisonous in high doses. Mind you, the one time dose might be fine but they do build in the body. Even the water soluble ones.
To take it a step further, there is a lot in the news about supplements containing dangerous chemicals. Most vitamin supplements just pass through the body without even being broken down and digested. Some of the body builder products EVEN CONTAIN REAL STEROIDS.
It is an unregulated and dangerous market that preys upon people who want a quick fix. Again, carb replenishers and stuff are fine, even a good multivitamin, but be careful beyond that.

Protein is a good solid base for recovery. Your body will absorb what it can and reject the rest, but its not 25 grams, its all dependent upon your needs. If you want to seek means for fastery recovery, look at glutamine (amino acid) products. Soreness is due to lactic acid build up, your bodies ability to recoupe revolves around rest, diet and water (and vitamins).
I use the powerbar gel stuff sometimes and it gives me a short boost to finish out the day, but was wondering if the 5 hour keeps your energy level up without the jitters.
Recovery? For the types of riding that about 90% of those on here are doing, any glucose-containing drink is fine. We aren't talking double or triple workouts that tri-heads are doing....
The rest of it is a waste of money, imo.

The best thing you can do for recovery time is eat right. A good balanced diet will give your body everything it needs. It takes about 24 hours for your body to use the fuel you put in it, so dont expect to eat like crap all week and then have some magic protien drink to work when you ride.
No one saw this, this week? http://www.racerxvt.com/ NASA makes an energy drink. It has my interest.
Best recovery drink: 16oz of Chocolate milk and 200mg of Advil.
Bottom line opinion from your typical Local A rider / wanabe Pro on a budget...
Dairy is a no go as a pre or post moto beverage. Even for those who aren't lactose intolerant. If you're serious you must be one of those people whos stomach is similar to a garbage disposal.
Of course eating right, a good multi-vitamin, good sleep habits etc are the goal for a base. But the question was what to do beyond that. Just because some people who post here can't do 5 laps, doesn't mean that the original poster or others don't ride a full tank before taking a break.

Personally I've found Creatine is a no go, as much as I need weight/mass, Creatine just makes me retain water and pump up with little to no moto-related benefit.
Cytogainer is a must for someone like me, as I'm 5'11 and 122lbs soaking wet.
The bottom line is have a good nutritional base, get your rest, whey or a weight gainer is up to your needs. Cytomax works, don't knock it until you try it and if you can't tell the difference it's probably because you didn't ride long enough or hard enough for it to make a difference. It's about $27 for 20-30 servings of the mix or $2 each in ready to go form at GNC. Trying it once won't break the bank and unlike gatorade or other sports drinks, it's actually useful.

Arm pump is caused by non oxigenated blood flowing to slowly through the arms, anything else is a myth.
I understand higher cholesterol diets will increase it, but there's certainly a downside there.
