Took my old Bell Moto 9 and gave it a facelift. Decided to go with an old school theme and of course, with my favorite color combination of black and yellow.
The yellow lettering are decals. I kind of wish I had put a VitalMX decal on the chin bar.
I used Krylon Colormaxx in flat black and carefully masked and covered all of the vents. I’ve painted several helmets with rattle cans and always achieved great results. It’s all in the prep work though. Sand, mask and paint on a clean surface and you’re good!

Matt paint shoots best out of a can in my opinion and doesn’t leave streaks.
Then shoot clear over it and let dry for 24hrs.

I did the same sort of paint jobs on my helmets way back in the day when custom painted lids were just not available and you could only get them in a single solid color. You could get white, red, black, blue and a few other colors. I would get white units and then go about making it mine with what ever color combs I elected to use. The family could always see me on the track as no two were the same.

Just like OP, took 3 paint cans and a few hours...
Go get a cheap touch up gun and pancake air compressor from Harbor Freight. While you are out, grab a cheap airbrush from Hobby Lobby/Amazon, and start laying down some color. It won't cost you hardly anything, you'll gain tons of practice, and if you care for it well enough, can possibly throw a few bucks in your pocket to put towards good stuff. You obviously have the the "feel" for laying down some color, now you can learn the important aspects of spraying things that aren't "pre-set" by the limits of a rattle can. Lid looks solid btw.... keep on keepin' on.
