Progress in the build has slowed a little. Primarily because I’m almost done! Just finishing up the details (chain, safety wire, skid plate mod, and the big detail - hydraulic clutch case fab work).

Decided to get a RaceTech titanium axle and nut. The stock one was just looking beat and I think this build needed it 😂

Still waiting on a couple cool bits that should be arriving in the mail soon. At that point, the assembly of the bike will be completely done.

On the topic of safety wire... I’ve seen the front brake banjo bolt safety wired to the caliper or brake line or to the brake pad pin. Out of all of these, the banjo bolt to brake pin seems the most practical but least used? Any guess as to why and which method is the "best"? Thanks!

Hi Mike,

I have a close up pic in my thread on how I safety wired it from the banjo bolt to the pad pin. Both HRC fasteners have the holes drilled and you get both wired at the same time, was used a lot, and looks quite good. It is what HRC did on my model RC. I have also seen HRC teams in later years drill a hole in the caliper for the safety wire. Do you want to drill a hole in the nice billet caliper? I haven't seen the banjo bolt wired to the brake line much on the front but sometimes on the back and you still are left where to wire the pad pin. This would be an easy decision for me. A distant #2 would be to start drilling holes in that billet caliper Sad

You mentioned about getting a new rear shock, but that A kit shock you have there is quite nice. If it has the 18mm shaft, you might consider sticking with it and just getting a works looking shock spring. I can give you the details on working with the RCS springs re set up and spacers. Renton is pretty good to work with. I have their titanium springs on my RC250M and CRF450 builds.

Excellent advice Mike! And point well made, banjo to pin it is!

Yes, The A-kit shock has a 18mm shaft. I believe it was ex-Factory Connection Team shock. I do agree that holding out for a full works shock might be just too much. You have mentioned before about the current spring just not looking the part and I agree. Not sure if I'll go the titanium spring route or try to get a candy red powered coated spring. That said I will for sure ask advice if I go with the RCS spring. Thanks as always Mike for the input and knowledge!

I don't have that much money for a kit, but try leaving the oem to my liking.

Finally got some parts in so I could continue the build

Installed the swingarm, HRC brake banjo bolt, and titanium bolts for the brackets on the swingarm. In this photo you can see the blue engine vent hose. I sourced the hose from Helix Racing Products and the engine vent kit from JCR Speed Shop. The kit comes with a yellow hose but I wanted to copy the current Factory Honda look. My hose color is a more transparent blue than Factory Honda but its the best I could do. Also moved the hose bracket and used the type of bracket Team Honda uses. The bracket is actually a Suzuki part. I could not find a Honda OEM bracket that matched. Go figure?

Also installed the rear brake pedal with new grease seals. The HRC brake clevis is from vintagehonda.nl it's a beautiful replica and includes a Ti pin.

Finally I did a test fit of the Yoshimura RS9 Titanium/Carbon exhaust system. Rather trouble shoot fit problems while bike is apart and easy to work on. Fortunately for me, the system fit perfect which is no surprise . The Yosh system is stunning.

One thing I thought of is that you could powder coat the titanium spring candy apply red.

I believe Suzuki used this clamp on many different bikes and years.
But I purchased these ones off eBay.
The Suzuki part number is 09404-06432
eBay listing #352928201381

They look way better in the sun but my wife’s red one looks just like the technical touch pergio shock.

A couple more parts arrived. HRC Titanium kick start knuckle and a "works" Renthal rear sprocket.

The HRC knuckle that I posted a couple pages back turned out to be the wrong one for my bike. It was actually for 2006/2008 CRF450R generation bike.

HRC titanium knuckle (the correct one). Really a beautiful little part.

The Renthal works sprocket is interesting. At first it looks just like any other Renthal sprocket. Holding it next to the standard Renthal sprocket, that is sold to the public, the differences are noticeable.

A couple things I noticed about the works one -Obviously the part number is different 154AH (AH - American Honda?) vs 154U, the metal has a different "look" (the aluminum has a kind of flaky appearance, maybe just old?), the teeth are sharper and different shape, and the decorative holes are a different size.

Ken Roczen's 2020 bike as reference (have to zoom in to see the 154AH part number, etc...)

And my sprocket

Thanks to @tbluth823 for helping me get these parts! Much appreciated.

Looking at the sprocket you got, the factory one looks Like they used a tumbler on it to maybe debut it or smooth it out before anodizing

I have been looking for a HRC Honda Hinson clutch cover for my bike but have had no luck. I do have a Rekluse HRC clutch cover as used by the HRC MXGP Honda team. And since my bike is much closer to a CRF450RW in looks and parts (hydraulic clutch, wheels, blue radiator hose, rear brake pedal, etc...) as used by the HRC MXGP team, it makes more sense for me to use that cover.

Rekluse HRC clutch cover

Along that same train of thought, I've decided to not use a black seat cover or the tank decals. They just don't fit the look. Two problems with the current seat (OEM Honda seat). First, the red is to "bright" compared to the graphics. I'm hopeful a Throttle Jockey red seat cover, as used by Team Honda USA, will blend better with the Throttle Jockey graphics 😉 Second, I don't like the shape of the seat foam. It's too thin and I think the carbon tank makes it bend too much. I don't like that "pocket" seat look or feel (I'm tall). So going to have to sort that out...

I like the seat as used by Paulin's bike, part of my inspiration for the build

I have a TJ seat cover on my 450 and I can confirm that the red vinyl they use is not so bright.

haha.. I just switched from a Rekluse cover to a Hinson cover on my 450, yesterday.. the Hinson cover is slightly less taller than the Hinson so it does quite clear the Rekluse clutch assembly so I got 2 thin spacers to move my Hinson cover out 2+mm to make it fit. Now you can't tell the bike has a Rekluse EXP clutch and looks more like the US factory bikes.

Here’s a light weight seat foam / seat. Sounds like you want a different color but the foam looks to be a little thicker?

Thanks for the info on the TJ seat cover! 👍

I didn't even realize there was a difference in thickness between the two covers until you mentioned it. That also explains why my HRC brake pedal (which came from the HRC bikes running Rekluse covers) seemed to stick out farther than I expected with the Hinson cover. I just assumed it was the HRC rider preference. With the Rekluse cover it "fits" perfect. Obviously the pedal was machined with the Rekluse cover in mind. Just awesome attention to detail.

Like a glove!

The Rekluse cover is only a few mm taller so not a huge difference.. not enough to fab a whole different pedal. My HRC brake pedal also came from Europe MXGP and fitment looks good with either cover, on my bike. They already had 2 different pedals for this bike as it is.. a light version (hollowed out on inside face) and a stronger, heavier version. I have the latter.

It's my rider so not as shiny as yours at the moment, Mike, but here is the Hinson cover I just put on over the Rekluse internals with 2 thin spacer gaskets. The Rekluse cover would bring it out just a smidge more. I couldn't ride the bike with the HRC titanium pegs without buying new boots every week and I also cut myself badly on them twice while working on the bike. It was hard when I first took the file to the tips of $6k worth of NOS HRC foot pegs, but I never regretted it afterwards. They are still quite sharp. I was lucky to get this NOS set for free.

It would be interesting to see the new crf 2021 and its clutch system, I think that in the future there will be many conversions or kits to do it.

a team from the enduro world championship offers a kit designed by them, but it was around 1,000 euros plus the machining work.

Very interesting Javi. Would love to the see the "Drawing with specifications for crankcase manufacturing." Even though it wouldn’t help me for my 2016 bike.

Perhaps the 2021 CRF450R hydraulic clutch pushrod is something I could use...

I think when the 2021 is unveiled there will be many attempts at clutch mounting on older models.

I finally got around to installing the HRC titanium kickstarter knuckle. Such an awesome piece. For the OEM lever, I first ground down the casting lines with sanding drum on a drill. Then hand sanded with medium to fine grit. Finally, polished using aluminum billet polish compound.

I also modified the Cycra skid plate to more closely match the HRC one as used by Team Honda. The Cycra skid plate is already almost the same as the HRC one. Just needed some parts cut off. I think it came out pretty good. Not an exact match but close.

Example of the HRC skid plate

Mine before... (black marks are cut lines)

...and after

On the "to do" list: Seat, safety wire, and some graphic install/modification (more on that later).
