The early 90s chassis benfit from the Devol or Noleen linkage (96-up stock linkage) but they are hard to find. Swap the forks out for the 06-present SSS KYB forks is a good upgrade for the handling.

I don't know if the WR incorporated everything learned on the YZ465/490 but for that motor you had to cut the head, rejet the carb and modify the carb slide. Porting mods on the 465/490 were adding the boyseen boost ports and just cleaning up the castings.

Cool bike and on my bucket list....

For sure get the head cut,I had mine done using the yamaha tech diagram
I used a pro circuit silencer with the stock pipe, made a nice power increase
I used Eric Gorr jetting in the stock carb,Changed the main, pilot, needle and needle jet
A keihin carb off of a 91-04 Kx 500 works well and the stock jetting is really close

On the suspension,I serviced the forks and shock and sprung it for me,worked ok
The bike needs better front brakes, but no one makes a bigger rotor, unless you swap out the forks for newer Yz 250
units and then you can upgrade the brakes
WR 500s are just Cool bikes

thank you for your replies....
im interested in the tech diagram ? the problems ive got at the moment is piston choice, ( prefer stock..but not available)
and really want to fit a pro circuit system, and fit a smaller, or better fuel tank..
im building the bike to lend to a quick rider... to race in the vintage races

Shue, any chance you have the jetting you used for the stock carb written down?

Thanks shue 415..
I'll send the head off this coming week for the above re cut and polish.
I'm still trying to find any info on the front pipe combo.. I've seen pro circuit; but for the life of me cannot find a pipe..do people use the yz 490 pipe.

Thanks for all yr inputs

Some people are using the FMF YZ490 pipe, but they have to cut the back inch or two off for the silencer to mate up properly. I read somewhere that a PC YZ490 pipe didn’t work as well. No idea if that is accurate, however. I’d love to have a PC Works pipe for mine.

As far as the fuel tank, you can either modify the cooling fins and run a YZ125/250 tank with shrouds, or what I went with is an aluminum WR500 tank from Mastercross. It’s smaller than stock, and feel much better when you sit on the front of the seat. A lot of the original plastic tanks are cracking, and as a result, old used tanks for these things are fetching silly prices.

Didn’t do a perfect job? How much more can you do! That bike looks brand new! Question on this era of YZ”s: Swing arm and triple clamps were painted same color as clutch cover? Silver metallic? Or is it best to just vapor blast them raw?

Here's mine, I have it a while now, it was in rough shape when I got it but I got it back to where it looked decent enough and can be raced.

Great info, thanks again. Can you remember which needle you paired with the R-O needle jet? Also, what elevation are you? Thanks!

I just picked up a oversized front brake kit from Rocky Mountain. Tusk version. Rebuilding the 500 since it needs some love.
Update- not true, the oversize disk did not fit. :/
