Anthony Gobert was good at anything flat track mx sx road racing didn’t matter was so good he thought the rules didn’t apply to him got caught and banned for smoking pot more than once ruined his career.

Difficult question to answer. It depends on what you define as skill on a dirt bike? The definition of skill is "the ability to do something well; expertise". In that case, it's hard to argue that James isn't the most skilled rider of all-time with the stuff he was able to do on a motorcycle in his prime, but factoring in the freestyle abilities that TP199 was able to accomplish along with winning championships has to put him in that list. I don't think someone being naturally talented and being "smooth" should be in the "most skilled" category. There's a lot of people in MotoGP or enduro riding that can be put in that list. It's tough to say someone is the "most skilled" on a dirt bike because they know how to pound braking bumps and hit a rut faster than another rider, but having the ability to ride over difficult terrain at a higher speed than most people could ride even at a beginner level would have to be at the top of that list over a traditional pro motocross rider. The stuff James did on a Supercross track was ungodly though.

I think you could be right.. he certainly is underrated

The biggest indicator to me was his practice sessions, how he would just roll around, looking at lines, sizing things up, never putting one full hard lap in, until the last minute, and it's the fastest.

Didn't pound out laps, rehearsing lines, trying to best each previous lap. He just rolled around and decided, "Ok, this is what I'm going to do to be the fastest." and executed it first try. That is skill.

Ron, JMB and Stewart are the obvious. But some old clips of Pastrana are pretty cool, he was doing some mad skill things on the bike and no rider ever over 6 feet used a bike in the manner in which he did. Pourcel would win without riding with the aggression your supposed to have on a 250, one of the biggest letdowns in SX history is him not getting a factory ride in 2011 on a 450. Kenny at times in 16 looked like he was on a completely different track than everyone else and he did it again at the Dilla this year, what he did this year there is far more impressive than what CP did there at any point IMO.
