I’m going to try the 490 main as he now recommends and see if that solves my issue.

I have a guy in Florida running my specs. and have gotten good feedback from him. We're running a 5.5ish slide that I've cut off of diggers specs. using the stock slide.

I'm also switching to 100% pump gas (currently its about 50/50 u4.4 and pump gas in my tank) so I can get that jetting sorted since thats what I get questioned on the most.
I'm the guy in Florida! 19 TC250
AJ specs work. The key is the slide,
I haven't got much time to update his jetting thread but saw this and want to confirm his specs work.

I also tried the 17-62 needle with same leaner slide and jets and it's also a very usable setup.
I'm running 96 non ethanol fuel, slightly oxygenated at 50:1 with Maxima K2

Did all this with a 470 MJ since it's all i had on hand at that time but going to bump to 480 or 490 this WE

Stock slide is too rich and you'll chase you tail if you keep it regardless of needle and jets.
I ran a 5.75 and it was too lean for me.
I also put some time with a 5 and it was already a drastic improvement.

I ordered the 5.5. Is that what you’re running now?

I have the 5.5 ish AJ cut for me and tested an OEM 5.0 that I had on hand. Couldn’t really feel a major difference between both .
You can’t go wrong with the 5.5 you ordered. I also tried a 5.75 and it was too lean.

I think the 5.75 slide works best when its really hot out, which is where I ride most. In general the 5.5 slide covers a wider air temp it seems. We're done with the 100+ days here for a while so I won't be able to use the 5.5 in real hot air until next year.

And make sure to have the S4 needle jet.

Just came back from riding , only swapped for a 480 MJ before.
Temp was low 80 but still 80% humidity (gotta love Florida for that...)
The bike ran amazing. Crisp, no bog, nothing wrong whatsoever and never had to mess with jetting from early morning low temp to higher later in the day.

Thanks again AJ!!

Just installed everything and positioned everything. Just starting it up and revving it on the stand was a massive improvement. Going up and down the street a few times was much better too. And it even made the pipe bang far less noticeable, which is awesome. I’ll actually ride next weekend so I’ll update. One thing I’ll say is the choke didn’t make much of a difference at idle and actually made it want to die more. I didn’t adjust my idle screw though. Does that indicate a possible rich situation in the pilot?

Yeah I actually had the same issue when I used the 32.5 pilot. But I figured since the temp had dropped you’d be fine with it. I had to put in a 30 pilot jet to get the air screw where it wasn’t all the way out. Turn your air screw way out and see if that improves it, if so throw a 30 in there until the temp drops this winter.

I’m really excited to try out the new setup that you recommend. I can’t believe KTM sends out the bike like that from the factory it’s so far off and not enjoyable to ride.
It's happened since beginning of time. I've been racing bikes for over 30 years on bikes dating back to 1974. Sometimes they are closer,,most of time they are/where rich from factories for warranty/safety. Through the years 90% of time some simple brass like main or pilot,,or lowering stock needle fixes them...but sometimes you have to change or modify slides to hit the nail on the head. Simple fix when someone gives you the specs...I chose to modify my own slide. Worked for me in 1990 on a KX250. Worked like a charm on my 17 TC250,,and also my 18 TC125. Cost -0-,,time spent with dremel was less than 1/2 hour and I was retesting. AJs specs are tried and tested by I imagine 100s that read his posts

I don’t think my choke does much either. It starts fine without it unless it’s really cold out. I also don’t have my bikes set to idle as it improves throttle response. Look back at all the pro races with 2 strokes and you’ll also see those bikes always had someone keeping it running so they weren’t set to idle either. This is my jetting as of today at a sand track that you’re basically wide open through most of it.

MJ 500
PJ 35
AS 1.5 turns out
Needle jet S4
Needle 42-75 on the 3rd clip
Slide stock that I cut and notched to 5.5ish.
PV 1.75 turns in from all the way out
Ethanol free 90 octane mixed 50:1.

Good thinking,,,yes a bike that doesn't want choke when cold is rich at pilot. I think the TC/SX has such a good draw of vacuum through carb,it's less effected, unless it's a really cold morning.. AJ is correct many faster pros didn't have a idle on their bikes....Since the mass majority are not that good,,idle is a good thing. My old 83 RM250 didn't come equipped with idle screw,,,and it cost me a win when I stalled in a hairpin corner last lap..Switched that carb the next week.

Rode my tc250/2018 for the first time since my injury in feb, only had 3 laps on it before i broke my scapula back then.
Vhm high compression head, vforce4, pps exhaust system.
Squish set @ 1.5mm like spec sheet from vhm recommends, iridium sparkplug. Mobil 1 racing oil mixed @ 1/40, gearing 14-49. Pirelli paddle tyre, sandtrack but not to heavy.
Temps when riding were around 20c°, 6BFY 44-73 in the middle clip, AS 1.5 turns out, 450 main, 42.5pilot. Stock needle jet and slide.
Of the bottom it did not pack much, had to clutch to come out of the corner. After that it was a rocket.
Also first serious ride after rebuild, have a separate topic regarding that.
I think jetting is off as for the rest everything is working perfect, plug was dry, ring was clean, isolator was dry black with white spot on the back. Exhaust tip was dry.
I think about putting larger mainjet and try 40 pilot.
Also have jd kit from my te 300 to try.
Or maybe i may not compare to my te300 2017 i also used for motocross before the tc, this with 13/52 gearing and same paddle tyre. This bike did not hesitate when exiting the corner.
I have number 5 slide, and the s4 needle jet with the needle, need to try this on the tc.
Tried the 5 slide with needle jet and needle, 37.5 pilot , 440main on my te300 this and it was to lean to ride. Even on the street...

So I see a bunch wrong with your setup. The high compression head kills your top end over rev. It’s good for a woods bike, but not really moto. If you’re more a woods rider then keep it and when you get the jetting sorted out you’ll really feel it down low.

The pilot is way to rich and the main is way to lean. Most of us are running 480+ on the main and in the mid to low 30’s on the pilot depending on the temps you’re in.

Swap to a 42-75 needle and put the slide, needle jet, bigger main and smaller pilot richen up the fuel mix to 50:1 and see how she runs.

Don’t waste your time with the JD kit. It’s a bandaid fix at best and doesn’t run near as well changing the slide.

42,5 pilot should be good, 40 maybe. Main 450 is to small in the sand, 470 of 480 in winter time.
Also 14-49 in the sand is not ideal, 14-50 of 14-51 makes it better for sure.

High compression is a bad statement as i still run regular 98 fuel, europe... The insert is the smallest size they offer of the 3, have the 1 with biggest volume also.
Higher compression aids in the lower rpm, more grunt but top end will suffer a little bit. I know... Bike does not sign off early with this setup... For the woods i have my te300.
Jetting used came out the manual, as i did not want to mess with brass first time riding again, also to get a baseline of performance.
Next time out I will try other setting, also winter now. Temps are dropping, rained alot. Want to keep jetting safe in, for sure with the sandtracks we have here...

JD red needle in my 300 worked good, comparable with the s4 needle jet with 42-75 needle. With 5 slide way to lean?

Yup, main was on the lean side. Noticed this between motos with the dry exhaust already...
Gearing is on the heavy side, but for sure this motor has the power to spin the wheel without clutching.
Just need to unlock it with good setting i think. Back in feb i used 14/52 and did not like it at all.

This was my setup today. It was somewhat chilly today, at 65 degrees.

MJ 480
PJ 32.5
AS 1.5 turns out
Needle jet S4 from the off road models (stock is S1)
Needle 42-75 on the 3rd clip
Slide 5.5 (Kawasaki part 16025-0002)
PV 1.75 turns in from all the way out
Fuel mix 55:1 with 93 pump

So it sounds good on the stand. Good response. Took it out to a decently sandy/soft track. Top end was great. Felt good and crisp, although could probably go up one on main and make it a litter better. What wasn’t good though was around 1/4 to 1/2 throttle under load. Pretty positive it was detonating (kind of sounding like there was a nut shaking around inside my cylinder... kind of like chatter). So I did easy change first and changed pilot from 32.5 to 37.5 (didn’t have a 35 on me). It didn’t change anything. Then lowered the clip to the 4th position (second from bottom) and I feel it made it a little better, but definitely still detonation present. I’m sure dropping it to the 5th May have helped more, but I was done for the day... and probably wouldn’t have eliminated it.

With that said, is the needle too lean for these cooler temps? Slide too lean? I’m absolutely no pro at jetting/carb specs and am new to making changes.

Which track did you go?
I have this setup on my 19 .
only small diff is 50:1 (96 non ethanol, slightly oxygenated) and PV is 1.5 out
Disclaimer : C minus rider!

I rode last week end when temps were finally cooling off and the bike ran great, best ever since I had it.

Going tomorrow to Bostwick Mx Creek, temps cooling a bit more.
I'll report back

I rode NFMX (Hilliard). I saw that bostwick was open, I only live about 40 minutes from there. But my ankle is pretty tore up after today... still recovering from a injury. I’m a B rider, but at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle that wouldn’t make a difference. If I’m not wrong, detonation is caused from a lean condition?

Yep I ran the exact same jetting and and had the same issue. I went to the 4th clip and it stopped my detonation but then my bottom was too rich again. I’m going to try 490 main and back to 3rd clip position next time I ride. I really would like to find a needle with a steeper taper because I believe that is the issue. But maybe the 490 main will solve it.

I rode last week end when temps were finally cooling off and the bike ran great, best ever since I had it.

Going tomorrow to Bostwick Mx Creek, temps cooling a bit more.
I'll report back
How'd it go?

The TC ran awesome
Need to be warmed up good, like any smoker then it just rips . I have zero complains, other than I can’t always keep up with it !
Temp went from 65 to 75 and never feel the need to touch anything .
Stock pipe and 304 PC silencer
I hated my 17 until I put a Keihin. Sold it to a friend and I still sometimes put some laps with it.
He’s way faster than me and love the setup I have on the 17.
Yet he thinks the 19 with AJ Mikuni setup is have much better .
Same for me.

I think the 480 is to lean for the temps. I’m at similar temps now running a 500 main with a 35 pilot. I didn’t notice any detonation running 50:1 90 octane non ethanol pump gas. It seems the more fuel you throw at this engine the more it likes it. I noticed a big difference in over rev at the same track between the same two corners bumping up from a 490 to a 500.

I had my kid riding too so it was a busy day and didn't feel like messing more with the jetting, but I'm sure i could have gone to 490 at least.
I'll pt onefor next ride.
AJ, do you think i could benefit from a 35 PJ?
Jets swap is no big deal but it's running good now, so i'm getting less picky.

Do you think clip position or different needle would fix it since its from 1/4 to 1/2? Or should I just go straight to bigger main jet?

You'd have to try and and see. When it gets cooler out maybe, but I noticed that my bike needed cleared out when I got on track from the ride from the truck to the track. Once I got it cleared out I had zero problems on track, but any loading up is a bit on the too rich side. I think in warmer weather I'll need to drop down to a 32.5 again like I had with pump gas.

I'd go bigger main that way you're still on the 3rd clip position. You should pick up a 490 and 500 and give them both a try and see if they will be ok in your area. The local Honda dealer had them both in stock in their jet trays so you may luck out like I did. Cost me a whole $6 for both.

I finally have my 2018 250SX jetted perfect in my opinion, no more off idle blubber and mean grunt through entire mid range. The motor feels electric and had no dead spots at all today. Will make minor adjustments as temps change.

ADK MX, Fort Ann, NY roughly 200ft elevation
55 Deg F, May 8th 2020
Stock 2018 250sx minus pipe and V-force reeds. (I don't think it effected jetting at all in case anyone was wondering)
JD-Jetting Jet block gasket fix (Also not sure if this did anything)

37.5 Pilot
43-71 Needle, 2nd Clip from top (this clip position was the game changer)
Stock Needle Jet
450 Main
1.5-2 on air screw, just far enough out so it started idling clean
