My old Tacoma had almost 300k miles on it so I decided it was time for a new one. I bought a brand new 2019 Tacoma TRD off-road 4wd. This brand new vehicle is gutless. The acceleration is pathetic. It pulls to the left. The window squeaks when it goes up and down. The gaps between the body panels are uneven. When I fill up with fuel the truck smells like gas inside the cab for 10 minutes. The fuel pump went out at 13k miles.The JBL stereo is not that great. The dealer has been little help. If you are considering one of these I’d look at something else.

You guys must have gotten bad ones lol. My '18 is typical Yota quality, the JBL rocks the house and I have pulled my 7x14 V-nose with 5 bikes in it to 11 events this year, some going up and over the Pa mountains without any issues. I pretty damn pleased with mine !!

I've had probably 8 Tacomas ,and I will say that my 2014 and the others with 4.0 would have NEVER pulled my loaded trailer, but the Atkinson Cycle engine is a huge upgrade imo. Its a shame that you're having quality issues too, that's very odd

Test drove a 19 Tacoma. Wasn’t impressed and for the price of the trd pro I was looking at I could get a tundra for less. Ended up with the 2019 tundra and so far been happy. Way more cab space and tow load as well.

I had problems getting mine serviced at World Toyota in Chamblee GA to the point where I had to escalate to the Toyota SE Region rep. The SE region rep was more
concerned with defending the brand than they were satisfying the customer. I have been a loyal toyota customer / driver since the 80’s. My loyalty to Toyota is officially over. I’ve never dealt with a bigger bunch of jerks.

When was your last oil change? Mine comes on ahead of needing an oil change as a reminder that its coming up. That’s what is happening here.

a friend of mine had the 2018 and you're right, 'gutless' doesn't even begin to describe the Tacoma and the ride was less than impressive.

I even have a 3" lift and 33" Nitto Ridge Grapplers on mine and it still has plenty of juice to haul that trailer and the 5 bikes /gear (Approx 4700lbs). I have 29,475 miles on it and not a single issue yet, as i expected. Maybe mine is just a great one and I was lucky?

I have bought three new Tacoma's over the years a 1990, a 1999 which I still have as a backup vehicle and a 2013 and have had zero problems with any of them but I didn't buy them for the horse power either that is why I have a Ram 1500. Also had a Honda Ridgeline and am pleased to say I have never had a problem with any of them that I bought new other than small issues covered by warranty.

My buddy just got one of these. Basically the exact truck as yours. Nice rig, but for what he paid, he could have gotten a pretty decently equipped half ton. IMO these things are living off past reputations and are significantly overpriced for what they are.

You'll change your mind quickly on that opinion when your friend goes to sell his and finds out how much that Tacoma will still be worth. Ridiculously high re-sale . Believe what I say, 36 years in the car biz has taught me a little bit about these things ,lol.

My next oil change is at 18k miles. The funny thing is this truck seems to run better now that the light is on. I have heard that when a check engine light comes on that the default mode is “full rich” on the fuel. Maybe that’s what’s happening here.

When mine is due for an oil change it pops up in that center screen where the miles to empty and speed are displayed. It says something like “due for service” or “service now” or something like that. I’ve only seen it once, but the yellow “check engine” light behind the speedo did not come on when the oil change was due.

Oh I agree, the resale values are awesome. He gets a new vehicle every few years, so I'm sure that was part of his decision. Regardless, I think they are a couple grand overpriced for what you get. C-channel frame, drum brakes, low torque Camry engine, lowest hauling/towing ratings. Hard to rationalize that extra cost over a Colorado or Ranger, let alone a 1/2 ton. You're paying for a reputation that may or may not still be justified.

I have never seen the value in a Tacoma unless you absolutely don't want a full size truck.

OP, sorry about your issues, they definitely seem to be reliable overall so it sucks yours has issues.

We, that are in the business certainly have a different opinion. My store absolutely LOVES selling pre-owned Tacoma's. No come-backs, no customer gripes, no after the sell "goodwill adjustments" to fix issues that costs me money. There are certain vehicles we try to avoid at all costs because of their headache producing issues,Toyota and Honda do not have a single vehicle on that list. On the top of that list ,however unfortunate it may be, are the 3 domestically made small trucks. Each one has a multitude of known problem areas that just grow with age and mileage. Without exaggeration ,my mechanical reconditioning/certification costs are 5 times higher on a Colorado/Canyon/Ranger than they are on a comparable Tacoma.
If a new Tacoma isn't big enough or powerful enough for your needs ,then by a 5.7 Tundra, a new Silverado/Sierra or even an F150 with the 3.5 EcoBoost, all of those are on our "great" list. But as far as mid-size trucks go, with my many years of experience as a Dealer and an actual truck owner, my money has gone to and will continue to go to Toyota. The domestic brands aren't even close in that segment.

I want to add-- that I'm not trying to be argumentative in any way whatsoever. If this thread was about Plumbing, HVAC, Photography equipment, hairstyles , asphalt paving or any one of other subjects that i know absolutely nothing about (and there are oodles of those) I wouldnt even post . But the auto industry, F&I and vintage dirt bikes are subjects that I know far more than the average person and I'll share my knowledge from time to time.

I agree the older Tacomas are awesome. I put almost 300k on my ‘99. That’s why I bought a new one. My ‘19 is giving me nothing but trouble. It only has 14k miles and it’s been in the shop for about 30 days in the last six months. My check engine light is on right now so it has to go back to the dealer again for a new problem.

Holy shit !!! How is it that you can tow such big,heavy items with that "gutless" Tacoma, Lol ??? Just busting balls obviously, like I said earlier in this thread I've hauled my 7x14 loaded with 5 bikes,gear,fuel,toolbox and 4 full size adults a dozen times this year up and down the Allegheny mountains the past year or so without a single issue.

HondaMan---I really feel you must have "bad" one somehow. As many as I've sold thru my dealership and personal experiences with mine and a bunch of buddies that have them, your issues are definitely not a common occurrence.
You stated that you smell fuel inside after you fill it and your check engine light has come on which leads me to believe those 2 items are related, which if it is, may also be causing your performance "sluggishness" . Your other issues are certainly way out of ordinary as well. If your dealership isn't showing any concern, get to the DM or higher if you must. There's definitely something not right with your truck. It sounds like you've had at least one Tacoma with the 4.0 V6 , how does your 19 run in comparison ? It should be a COMPLETE night and day difference. My 18 runs better hauling the trailer than my 14 did empty. Make some noise get that thing fixed !!!
