On the broadcast, the announcers always talk about how Anderson and Tomac have been racing each other for a long time, because they grew up fairly nearby.

I've been through southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico. Those are pretty sparsely populated areas. How much organized motocross racing is actually happening in those areas?

Anderson is from Edgewood which is right outside of Albuquerque. It's not like they grew up in the same town or anything. From listening to Tomac on Whiskey Throttle he said the closest track was an hour and a half from where they lived. I think him and Anderson were the top dogs at nationals in there class for many years so they raced each other a lot but not as often as Weigant makes people believe. Weigant has also said numerous times the Hunter Lawrence was a championship contender in the GP's as well. Weigant is very good for the sport but he is a journalist/broadcaster at heart and wants to push the narrative.

Good stuff. On a similar topic, how many races each year do the top amateurs usually race against each other anyway? Mammoth and Loretta's? What else?

At least spell the man’s name correctly if you’re going to accuse him of something.

Weigandt said they were neighbors and their subdivision was divided by the state line. Tomac on the Colorado side, Anderson on the New Mexico side. They used to race big wheels around the cul-de-sac, until the HOA got involved.

I feel like there are sponsorship dollars attached to Weege saying this. He says it every week. I’ve heard it as much as the geico thing

I forgot Vital is AP English. Accusing the guy of doing his job. That is what someone in the media does, they want to tell a story and get people interested.

Mammoth, Loretta's, Loretta's qualifiers, JS7 at Freestone, Daytona, Mini O's, Ponca, Cal Classic, Baja Brawl, plus larger local and regional races. Top amateurs in the same region will see each other several times each year.

When Tomac was growing up the race scene was strong in So Colo and New Mexico, that is why so many top riders came out of New Mexico, you had Mancos Colorado, Aztec, Moriarty, Tula Rosa all in New Mexico with active race series. At one point you had Gio and Ivan Tedesco, Ryan Clark, Kieth Johnson, and Justin Buckelew all making mains and Billy Swapp from Durango has a Motocross school in So Cal. So ya this was a hot bed in the 1990's and early 2000's.

Nowadays the top Amateur events that you see majority of the top dogs at are Daytona Freestone Lorettas MEC and Mini O’s.

Tomac came down to our local track called Sandia Mx, when they hosted an amateur national (03,04?). It brought out some bigger names. Anderson and Tomac battled the entire day on 65s, was truly a site to see. On top of that Moriarity was a Loretta Lynn qualifier (still is?).

In the early 2000, motocross scene in Querque was poppin. If I had a time machine, I’d be there, doing it over and over and over. Doghouse chili dogs would be half the reason why.

Most of the amateur nationals that they grew up racing each other in, are no longer.
Loretta’s and Mini O’s are the only ones left, besides Mammoth, if you want to consider it an amateur national.
There was Lake Whitney, Mosier, Oak Hill, World Minis, Erv Braun’s Arizona Race, Ponca City (the original), not to mention the CMC Golden State and Fall Nationals, GFI series and the California Gold Cup races that drew on the top amateurs with contingency money.

The announcer was not wrong though, they would bang bars at the local tracks (Aztec, Sandia, Moriarity) from time to time. Was not every other weekend, but definitely did happen a handful of times.

Call me persnickety, but isn't it the job of the media to report on what's actually happening? Rather than create/embellish things that either aren't or are only kinda happening.

Maybe commentator Weege has a different motivation to journalist Weege?

I'm in NE New Mexico near Raton. Tracks are all 3-4 hours away, except for our local practice tracks (just ran a CORCS in Trinidad and Jason stopped by Raton when he was on Suzuki). Those would include:

Moriarty, NM
several in CO Springs, primarily Aztec Family Racing
several in Denver, incl Thunder Valley
Aztec, NM

If I were a serious racer, I could race every weekend and I could dip down into TX easily from ABQ and pick up lots of stuff down by Austin and such. PHX is not a bad drive from ABQ. It's not CA, but you'd get enough racing done.

They are sports commentators, not news journalists. "The media" is a fairly broad term.

I believe it is Grant's job to give technical facts about what's going on and it is Weege's job to create excitement and tension during the broadcast. It's more fun to watch sports when there is emotional context involved. This is why they bring these facts to light. These snippets get a bit repetitive but they do add context as to why that particular battle is interesting when it inevitably occurs(aka tomac gets a bad start and has to pass anderson who's usually in 3rd or 4th).

Weege does a great job. Way better than Ralph. Either way we should be supporting all these guys as they are providing us with summer long entertainment. Something we all look forward to weekly. I don't think weege is ballin by any measure either, it's a job he does because he's passionate about it.
