Can I be competitive?

Edited Date/Time 6/20/2019 8:11am
Hello all,
Brand new to this forum. I am 6 ft 2 in tall and weigh 255 lbs. I want to race harescrambles badly. I am decently fast on the trails. Do you think I even have a shot at being competitive in this?

I am working to lose weight now. I know I’m fat. Any advice for that or encouragement in appreciated. Brutal honesty also appreciated.

Thanks!

Drop 35 pounds, build up your cardio and spring your bike for your weight.

Grant Baylor weighs more than you and handles people regularly in the premier off road events. However he is on a 450. Use it as motivation to lose a few lbs.

Go for it. Sign up for a C or D class and just have fun! At worst you get gassed and quit before it's over, in which case just help other riders or just sit and watch. The fast guys are FAST. They're fun to watch

Thanks! I am doing the whole meal prep thing and exercising as regularly as possible with my travel schedule for work. I appreciate the help and encouragement!

Competitive means a lot of different things. In what class? Pro/A? No. B? Doubtful. C? Probably not. Woodsmen (or whatever your series calls beginner) Maybe? No one here knows you so we have absolutely no idea. Just sign up, have fun and finish whatever beginner class there is. If you finish then you did well. Work your way up and in a year or two maybe you’ll be competitive in the C class.

Don’t be surprised if you get lapped 3 or 4 times by the top 10 overall guys. It will most likely happen. Just continue to chug on and race your own race til you get acclimated with the format. After your first handful of races you’ll be more comfortable with pushing yourself.

Thanks man! I’m planning to race my first race in September. Hoping to lose a few lbs before that

Thanks for the help and advice! I will be racing the D class beginner to start out this year. I just want to do well. I’m not expecting to go pro or even ride up in b class at all. I would like to be in c class in the next year or two

Of course you can be man. Good on ya for having a goal and using your desire to race to change your lifestyle. That’s why moto is so amazing! That’s awesome. For me working out “too look good for chicks, or looked ripped” isn’t enough to make me motivated to stay with it cause in the end I don’t care. But the motivation to workout to be more fit on the bike and not get as tired in motos really drives me in the gym or during really shitty runs because riding is what I love more than anything. And let’s be honest it’s much more fun when you don’t feel like your going to have a heart attack as soon as you come off the track. . Drop some pounds and work on stamina and work on the suspension to be comfortable and safe and your solid. Just have fun with it man, “competitive” will come if you put in your work and have fun.

Thanks man! I appreciate the encouragement and advice! I’m definitely doing my first race in September. Hopefully I’ll be a little lighter by then.

Those are good and realistic aspirations. Just some advice. When you hear someone come up on you fast, just move out of the way. I can’t tell you how many people getting lapped won’t move when us pro/A riders come up from behind. We are super thankful when the guys getting lapped just move. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve had to “move” lappers out of the way though.

I appreciate it! I moved off the trail this past weekend when I heard a guy coming behind me and he quite literally cleared like 50 ft of trail off a jump in the trail and went flying off. It was epic to watch. I was just practicing, but man it was so cool to see those faster guys flying all over the place.

You'll do fine, just go out and have fun and challenge yourself. Don't go on a diet... eat healthier as a lifestyle. I like your your approach and honesty.

Some of the fastest guys I know, experts/A riders, are +225lbs. Just go race and twist the throttle. 😃

What do you think? The opinions of others mean nothing, if you want it and believe it, you can make it happen.

riding is one of the best forms of exercise there is. Your size doesn’t matter, you’re skill level and determination does. Go for it.
