"You never know where the edge is unless you try to find it" speaking about pushing yourself to find your own personal edge when riding. He said RC, Stewart etc.. practiced at the edge during the week so they could ride at 95% on raceday.

My kids and I attended a pee wee school this past weekend in Axton, Va and all I can say is that guy is still the best when it comes to rider training, well worth the money. He is a virtual encyclopedia of MX knowledge.

Hey...I ripped the crotch out of my 501s at the 4-Stroke Nats., and I am packin' mad dong...

I didn't get one sigh, or even close to being arrested. Guess it's who you know these days !

WTF is wrong with 501's lately? I had two pair do the same thing.

My dad was of the same mindset. I would go out and have a great practice session (or so I thought) and on the way he'd tell me it was a waste of time since I didn't crash........didn't push it hard enough.

Bailey was the best instructor I ever had. He would make kids cry at his schools. I'll never forget the time he was trying to show his class how to skim some pretty gnarly whoops and not one person would try it. He called them all a bunch of panty-waists and that old gray haired man jumped on his bike and skimmed them perfectly.

You can always count on a couple of dickheads(no pun intended) to screw up a good MX thread on this board.

What was cool was that my kids were being taught by him 22 years after my first class with him.

Way back in '81, I attended Bailey's class before the Lake Whitney National. At a time when we had full gates of intermediates, I went from getting 10th's and 12th's, to winning. On the last day of class while everyone was working on starts, David singled me out for a long trail ride up in the hills above the track. In retrospect, that was the best part of the class.

Both of my boy's look better on the bike already. Biggest benefit I got from it is how to coach my kid's the RIGHT way.

I went from a top 10 C rider to running up front in the B class within a year of attending a week long Bailey School in 87.

No stick in '81 but he did teach me to keep my hand on the clutch.

That was it for me, too. He taught me how to practice. Not too long after that, I went from mid pack to winning Int. classes. I've had lessons from other people but he was by far the best.

Glad to hear he has helped the kids refine there riding. Sounds like a good class.

I really wonder who said, "If you don't crash you aren't trying hard enough" first though?

What was really cool was to sit and hear him tell stories about David's championship years. I was eating that shit up.

back in the day Gary had a Maryland kid on an RM85 demonstrating everything for his classes-- Travis Pastrana.

When I took a class with David he parked in the whoops to keep us to the left. I got out of shape, plowed into his quad and smashed my radiator.
As I was coming off the bike I grabbed him in a big bear hug to keep him from falling. I was completely and utterly ashamed. But he just laughed it off. He's always been cool to me since then.
Later I discovered I had a blown fork seal that was making my bike handle like crap.

He smacked my hand several times at Aquasco back in 82.

I think it was Gary who told me.......if you dont crash every now and then your not trying hard enough.

How old is Gary new? I would be willing to bet he is faster than 95% of us on this board!

I saw a while ago that Gary is selling on his site all of the old race videos he shot.

Gary has been my MX coach for 10 years now. Felt his wraith and his success. The best part about his class, everyone leaves smiling and feels better about their riding.

I am close friends with the Bailey family and Sean who is one of my best friends has the funniest stories about his grandpa and all of the classes he has attended. Before David would even let Sean ride at a track he had Gary teach him starts in an open field, and stuff like this.. At one mx class @ lake elsinore, Gary was frustrated with his class and decided to show them how to go through the whoops with shorts and tennis shoes on! haha he is the man!!!

He talked alot about the first day Sean ever rode. He told him if he took his finger off the clutch lever , they were done for the day! I think he said he was 10.

sean is 21.. will be 22 in oct. Turned pro last summer doing local races to try and get points in order to be ready for Glen Helen of 08.. ended up herniating some disks in his back and ended up missing Lorettas and did not get anything lined up. He is the best rider i know and has had some really bad luck with his back. He rides for fun now and is an avid drummer and plays with two bands.
