Did anyone catch his interview on DMXS? If so, what was your opinion? It was pretty candid and worth a listen IMO.

At the risk of misquoting him, he basically said that he doesn’t know what’s wrong with him except that it’s mental and not physical. He’s in great shape, just gets vapor locked mentally on race day. He went on to say that he wishes dirt bikes were more fun. Putting in so much work has kind of zapped the enjoyment out of it for him. Based on the way he was talking, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him walk away at the end of the season.

If I misstated his message, please correct me. I’m just paraphrasing what I took out of it.

I’ll add this, if your are a JH fan, you’ll root for him even harder after listening. If you’re a JH hater, you’ll say it was just a bunch of bullshit. He’s lazy and making excuses.

have you ever ridden 2, 30 min motos in one day? how about multiple days in a row? These guys arent lazy, theyre worn down. They would probably race better with one day of raining during the week.

I think people can be inherently lazy... or something like that.

Some people thrive on working hard and others thrive on having fun and work wears them down. Others do the work and get hungrier and more motivated.

I wonder whether some mental coaching could flick the switch?

Although in saying that often the people that work and thrive on winning retire early.... So im not sure.

I can only comment on my experience. But I been playing Ice hockey since 2nd grade. At all levels. And there’s something about a serious game that gets me almost weak/lazy during the whole game. And I know moto and hockey are in my opinion the two most physical sports. And when I’m not thinking and are just playing I do the best.

When I played basketball all the time competitively...H.S., AAU allll summer, all the driving and traveling it sucked the fun right out of it and I ended up quitting...felt like a job and wasn’t fun anymore. Can be the same with riding. RV hated it now he’s loving life. JH enjoys riding for fun and this isn’t fun for him. Yeah sure he could be lazy but who knows

Wow. If that's how he feels I fucking feel bad for him.

Needs to do a few 60Hr workweeks in an office and see how good he's got it.

According to a good friend who would know this a lil too well, that number is quite a bit higher than what he's actually making this year.

But that's the number for 2 year contract, right?

I think everyone is too hard on him. There have been many naturally talented riders who had problems figuring out how to be their best. Heck, we all struggle with that in everything we do, not just riding.

He won a 250 SX championship. Good for him. Not many can say that.

I listened and came away with the impression that he does not comprehend earning enough money now so he can do what he loves later. Shoot, he could kill it for 3-4 years then retire to his cars and music.

Do the parents get paid salaries when their kids hit money? Im sure the hill's have spent plenty of money they didn't have over the years to fund the racing effort.

He lucked into that championship when Shane had his troubles. Shane was fast but when Justin got on a roll it was game over. He also won on a RMZ Suzuki. Milestone win.

You don’t handle pressure well. It doesn’t mean you’re lazy.

No one at this level is “lazy.” Some people just don’t have the desire. And that’s okay.

I think the kids should share or give the parents an allowance. I'm sure some of these parents are spending savings and retirement funds.

If parents are spending their retirement funds or taking out 2nd and 3rd mortgages in the hopes that little Johnny makes it pro, that's their doing.

Little Johnny isn't forcing their parents to spend money.

I’m not taking a swipe at you or Justin with this comment. But it is literally his job. He gets paid (really well) to ride a dirt bike. If he doesn’t succeed at racing I have no doubt he can be successful in some form relating to dirtbikes much like Axel Hodges. Justin has a fun personality and amazing style on a bike. No doubt he can make money having fun.

My dad worked his ass off to fund my racing. But it was always just fun and he had the money. He wasn’t taking out any sort of loans to fund it. I didn’t “make it” but if I had I absolutely would have made sure my parents were set.

I agree. This is his 450 rookie season so give him time to figure it out. He was super fast in qualifying this year. He needs to figure out his training and get on a better bike then he will be fire.

I'm sure a lot of the top guys take care of their parents once they make it. What I'm saying is no kid is forcing their parents to spend a whole bunch of money because they like riding and want to go pro.

If a 12/13 year old has that much control over his parents, well, those parents are failing miserably.

I agree. Unfortunately parents do stupid things and fund their kids racing when they can’t afford it. I grew up with a few kids who had parents that sold everything they owned and went into major debt. Their kids were the guys finishing near last in schoolboy at Loretta’s. Then they fade away and their parents are left so far in debt. It sucks to see.

Agreed. Hockey and Moto are both hard as hell. I only played until my late teens but I rode and played hockey in the winters. I also of course screwed around with baseball and basketball but neither gave me the hit Moto or hockey did. Nor we're they as taxing- go wild!

Your exactly right , though maybe a mental coach might not help in the long run because as you say some people just thrive in high load programs in sport and quite often creative types like Justin would probably prefer to do 1 30 minute moto then go play some music... that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily lazy just his body or mind could probably fatigue easier and to not fatigue he may have to put in a higher work load then some to achieve the same results ..
Ken Roczen and some others are absolute freak athletes who thrive on it ..

Why yes I have, which is why I got burnt out on racing by the ripe old age of 15
