Good question. I've always wondered the same.

I'm sure there will be some council bullshit law that you can't ride waves on them here.....??
There is not. I ride my waveblaster in the surf on the goldy all the time. It's pretty similar to moto and what I replace riding with in the summer when it's too hot to ride. It's not as good as riding though.

If you really learn to ride - stand ups are very similar, if not better for some people than moto. The downside is the learning curve, and potentially not having anyone to ride with.

Getting into racing and freestyling stand ups has been one of the greatest things for my sports/hobbies.

Used to ride moto (lightly/basic), had back surgery, and years later bought a stand up. Entered a race 6 months later and never looked back. Traveled to The World Finals and competed there, insane talent from all over the world comes to Lake Havasu City, AZ every year.

Because of the changing water conditions stand ups are more physically demanding. No seat to sit on and your legs are the suspension. Have to have great balance since the pole also moves. I ride with a bunch of guys 30-60 who have all hung up riding dirt bikes for racing stand ups and never looked back.

Going 70mph (or upside down) on the water is a freaking rush, and I HIGHLY recommend learning to ride and trying a race!

You can check out IJSBA, Pro Watercross, JetJam Racing on the west coast, East Coast Watercross, AWSA, TXH2O Racing in the south, and Nautiwater Racing in the midwest to find races near you.

If you want a real challenge and an even tougher work out, get a Kawi 550... The OG ski. Love mine!
You mean 440! I wish I never sold mine.

The last one I rode was the Kawi 800, man my cardio couldn't take it. I was running + 180 BPM on the heart gauge at 3 palms lake after 3 twenty minute motos on my 450. Waaay harder..

Tracks have dwindled away to next to nothing around here, yet I live next to the ocean. Hence the question.
Stand up jet skis are definitely close to moto. Especially the motosurf where they race in the ocean! That gets gnarly quick. The fitness for jet skis is just like moto. Just like moto, having friends to ride with is fun. While river and lake is riding is fun, just freeriding in the surf is awesome. As a background, I went from moto industry...

As a mechanic previously for Peick and then a couple years with Shane McElrath. We had a baby and I couldn't be on the road anymore and after moving found my way back to over Blowsion and now build some of the baddest freeride and freestyle jet skis.

In my opinion it’s safer and more fun unless you can really RIP on a dirt bike. I started Moto too late to really learn jumping bigger stuff and that always held me back on the track

The learning curve on a jet ski is so fast compared to moto. Way less consequences for screwing up. You can buy a brand new superjet for 8 grand. Put about 2-3k in it. And literally ride the thing for 10 years without ever changing oil, cleaning a filter, or basically any maintenance if you are just a casual Rider and flush the thing out after salt water if you ride the surf. Maybe throw a top end in it after 5 years hahaha. Just don't let them sit with water in them. About the only way to kill them.

Go checkout our friend Tony @tigercraft on instagram. Most of those guys race and ski. Stand ups are killer cross training, lots of core strength and balance involved. Those guys go hard! https://www.instagram.com/p/BwNzM59lMabQgZjUzRgVVE2uGzNAydj55EcUZg0/?ig…

Yamaha superjet. Period best ski to buy. Raced everything that Gen X’rs do and everything has its place. Jetskis can be real fun like moto and offer clean fun (bikinis, beer, hanging) with others. Setup a course in choppy water and you can really get a work out. MM25 is a current pro that is a top shelf rider.

Well you guys have sold me. I've been on the fence for a while. I tried one last summer and loved it.

I've got my eyes on a clean looking 08 SXR 800. Anything in particular I should look out for? I would be strictly lake riding.

Nice choice..that or an 08+ Superjet.

Most common issues are clogged carb, front stator cover and/or bendix leakage (can see water/rust on flywheel), crank seals (oil around pump coupler, pressure in stator cover). Look at wear around impeller, and impeller damage. No cracks/soft spots in tray that could let water in to the tray foam.

Same as dirt bikes otherwise, look at plugs, take a compression gauge if you have one.

I working on an updated video, but you can check out my How to Ride a Stand Up video series for common pointers.
